For Strong Parents

Strong Father,
You call parents to the noble goal of not only raising strong citizens, but also strong Christians. Theirs is not an easy task in a world that is flooded with outside opinions, influences, and distractions – so many of which are negative and destructive. Purify their hearts from all selfishness that could lead them to resent their children as a bother or an inconvenience. Help them to manage their anger and frustration so that it would never be taken out on their children or put them in danger. 

Keep them focused on their parental responsibilities and provide them with necessary resources and support. Let the words that come from their lips match the behavior that is reflected in their lives, so that children are not confused, but have clear expectations and boundaries. Through the gentle patience and loving discipline of parents, establish homes that are places of safety and stability. Equip parents to put Jesus’ love on display constantly, and let your Word dwell richly in families everywhere. Bless faithful parents with the countless joys that accompany parenthood, lighten their burdens, and limit their discouragements.

For the Blessings of Books and Reading

Good Lord,
Thank you for the blessings of books, literature, and technology that makes the written word accessible in so many ways and forms. As our society becomes more and more visual and video-based, the benefits of reading are being lost. Too many are illiterate or struggle to read. Provide teachers, tutors, and technology to help all who are in need learn to read. 

It has also been said that leaders are readers. Move men everywhere to trade in their gaming consoles and screens for books more frequently. Edify and equip them through the words and wisdom of others, and direct them to put their knowledge into practice. Bless others through their learning and application. Foster in them a love for reading that naturally flows into time in your Word, where you provide the richest blessings of all.

For Protection from Pornography

Loving Father,
Sex is your special gift to husbands and wives. It not only serves the purpose of procreation, but also provides spouses with a unique and pleasurable way to deepen their connection with one another. Sex is a good and beautiful thing, because you created it to be so.

Nevertheless, through the sin of pornography, our fallen world has cheapened and trashed this blessing. While the world increasingly normalizes pornography as a harmless option for anyone and everyone, it continues to drive sex-trafficking, devastate marriages, and devalue women. It is an intense temptation which technology has made so easily accessible to boys and men of every age. Guard their hearts from this dangerous sin. Protect teenagers adjusting to changing hormones, isolated and lonely men, husbands who are away from their wives for lengthy periods, and all others who are especially susceptible to the allure of pornography. Through a steady diet of your gospel, give them a spirit of strength and discipline, and the desire to stand strong and struggle against this temptation. Provide them also with caring Christian brothers to stand with them in their battle.

For Those with No Home

Caring Father,
Not everyone has the blessing of a place to call home. While the reasons for this vary, regardless of what they are, continue to provide in one way or another for those without a home. Move friends and family members to be willing to open their homes when they would not be putting themselves in danger. When these options aren’t available, provide other avenues of generosity through church, community, or social services, so that shelter can be secured. While temporary housing is an immediate need, work behind the scenes to put into motion the plans that need to be carried out to provide permanent housing solutions. Thank you for those who dedicate themselves to this worthy cause of securing housing for those in need. May they be a blessing to many, and as they let their light shine, may those on the receiving end of their generosity eventually be drawn to you.

To Enrich My Time in the Word

Spirit of Enlightenment,
I treasure my time in the Word. Nevertheless, I still fall into the trap of thinking there are so many other things that need my attention first, which leads me to put off your Word until “later.” When this happens, the result is often that “later” never comes, or when it does, I have so much on my mind that my time in the Word is unfocused or distracted by other concerns. Guard me from the lie of “later.”

Let me approach my daily time in Scripture like first fruit giving, so that it gets the first and the best of my time. When I am reading it and reflecting on it, enlighten and enrich me, uncovering for me precious promises and truths to feed and refresh my soul. Keep me from treating time in your Word like another “to-do” item on my list. Instead, use that time to deepen the roots of my faith and strengthen my spirit, building me up and maturing me to live for you to produce the abundant harvest of good works which you prepared in advance for me to do.

To Warmly Welcome the Wandering

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred. Today in your churches, there will be believers returning for worship for the first time in months or even years. Some may be members of their respective congregations, while others are not. First and foremost, provide exactly what they need to hear through the proclamation of your Word. Allow a clear preaching of the law to do what you intend, and a clear preaching of the gospel to do what only it can. Shelter these returning believers from snarky or thoughtless comments from their fellow Christians, ensuring that they are eagerly welcomed with joyful delight of the father in Luke 15. Let their experience feel to them like a homecoming, with their family of believers excited to rekindle their relationships and once again walk together in faith.

To Have and See the Blessings of Patience

Dear God,
While your timing is perfect, my patience is not. Virtually every area of life has sped up over time, meaning we are used to getting what we want almost immediately. We don’t have to wait until a certain night of the week for our favorite show – we can stream it right now. Same-day delivery means days or weeks of waiting for our purchase is most often a thing of the past. Our meals can be heated up in minutes and our phones give us instant answers and feedback on anything we want to know.

As a result, we aren’t accustomed to waiting. Having to do so can make us anxious and irritable. We struggle to wait in line or at the stop light. And we also struggle with the timing of your promises. We want you to keep them on our time, not yours. We want you to act now, not months or years from now. So I ask you to be patient with me in the midst of my impatience. Forgive me. Grant me a spirit that can slow down and wait. Let me use my windows of waiting for prayer and spiritual reflection, and allow me to see the many blessings of patience in my life and in my interactions with others.

For Those Carrying Out the Church’s Work

Holy Spirit,
So many are needed to carry out the ministry of the church. You provide not only pastors and teachers to carry out that work, but also very capable and gifted individuals to oversee and coordinate the work. While some are paid for this work, most are not. Thank you for working in them the desire to use their gifts and time for this noble purpose. Make their service a blessing to fellow believers. Bring them joy and reward in carrying out their responsibilities faithfully. Use them to support others when necessary and to lead when called. Build up your kingdom through their efforts, and meet all of their spiritual needs so that they can carry out their work well.

For the Ongoing Pursuit of Growth

Loving Lord,
When you called me to faith, you called me to a life of growth. While our physical bodies are limited by how much they can grow before they start to decline, our faith can always grow, no matter our age or circumstances. However, this kind of spiritual growth doesn’t happen accidentally, but intentionally. It happens when we are deliberate about prioritizing your Word in our lives. And, while we may tend to think of growth happening in ideal settings and surroundings, it often happens in scenarios that are anything but. Adversity and affliction can be accelerators of growth if we let them, as those are the experiences which easily strip us of self-reliance and steer us toward our Savior. No matter what season of life we’re in, give us faith eyes that see favorable opportunities to grow closer to you.

For Husbands to Prioritize Their Wives

Gracious Savior,
Marriage is one of the most tremendous blessings you have given to mankind. Yet we often and easily overlook it, take it for granted, or neglect it. When this happens, it’s not just the marriage relationship that suffers, but we are also missing out on a unique relationship which you established to lead us to a deeper understanding of our relationship with you.

Lead husbands to renew their devotion to their wives and to focus on developing their marriage relationship. Help them manage their days and schedules in a way that prioritizes their time with and attention to their wives. Grant grace to husbands to make them eager to meet the needs of their wives and to be willing to live sacrificially for them. Move them to have hearts of service that follow in Christ’s footsteps and put the needs of house and home before their own. Through all of this, richly bless not only wives, but husbands as well, as they continue striving to become more and more like you.
