For First Responders

Protective Father,
Through first responders, you protect property, provide care, and save lives in accidents and emergencies. Thank you for providing trained professionals in many fields who are willing and able to arrive first on the scene of what is often chaos or disaster. Transport them safely whenever they are rushing to a scene, and protect them from danger or injury once they arrive. Give them clarity as they assess the scene and triage the injured. Keep them alert and aware. Grant them discerning and decisive minds and skilled hands. Enable reliable communication between first responders and those following up. Bless them for their selfless service, and bless the lives of many others through them.

To Appreciate that Unity Doesn’t Require Uniformity

Dear Jesus,
As believers, help us remember that unity does not mean uniformity. We pray for unity in carrying out our mission and remaining faithful to biblical doctrine and practice. But we can also appreciate that those priorities will not necessarily look the same everywhere. Different groups and individuals will have a variety of opinions and ideas for how to follow through with those unified priorities. We celebrate that so much in our lives falls under the realm of Christian freedom, which will naturally result in variety from one place to the next. At the same time, being unified doesn’t mean that I abuse my Christian freedom to drive my own agenda. Rather, I put “we” before “me” in your church. Help me rejoice in our unity, while always being able to distinguish that unity from uniformity. Love for you, Lord, and for my neighbor, compels it.

To Avoid Sneaky Speech

Word made flesh,
When we take the time to look back on past issues or challenges and reflect on what factors contributed to them, we often see the common refrain of a communication breakdown. Sometimes this is caused by a failure to speak clearly enough not only to be understood, but also to not be misunderstood. Other times, however, it can be because communication was deliberately misleading or ambiguous, to mask a hidden agenda or keep true intentions hidden. Grant me the wisdom to address the former, and a penitent heart to confess the latter when I’ve been guilty of it. For such sneaky speech is nothing but dishonesty and lying. When we use communication to deliberately deceive, while giving the appearance of being forthright and truthful, we cause great damage and division. We are tearing down rather than building up or edifying. That sinful talk has no business coming from the lips of your people. Since all such speech starts in the heart, give me a pure heart so that my speech may reflect it.

For the Gift of Knowledge

Spirit of Knowledge,
Knowledge is a blessing both to those who have it as well as those with whom it is shared. Therefore, draw many more to the pursuit of knowledge. Thank you for the curious minds who have gone before us to discover and share what they learned, allowing generations that follow to build on their knowledge. Information is accessible to so many different people in so many different ways, enabling many minds to acquire endless knowledge. Direct those who grow in knowledge to use it for noble purposes and for the advancement and advantage of their fellow man. Combine knowledge with love so that rather than puff up the individual, it builds up many. See that the plans of those who seek to gain knowledge for sinister purposes never come to fruition and foil all malicious intent. Since the most valuable knowledge flows from knowing you and having faith in you, grant this knowledge and the gift of faith to many.

For Those Wrestling With a Difficult Decision

Lord God,
Help those who have been wrestling with a difficult decision. There is much wisdom in taking the time to thoroughly think through possibilities and seek the counsel of others. Use your Word to guide them with your insights and perfect promises. Compel them to ask thoughtful questions regarding their decision, and grant them clarity as they pursue the answers. Finally, when they have arrived at the time when the decision is required of them, bless them with peace of mind and confidence in their decision. Let their confidence rest less in the certainty that they made the right decision, and more in the certainty that you are surely able to bring good out of whatever they decide, just as you promise to do for your people.

To Appreciate Those Who Teach

Dear Lord,
While teachers are certainly worthy of recognition for much longer than just one week of the year, we thank you for the opportunity this week to show our love and support to educators. While the role they play is one of the most essential, it is also one of the most under-appreciated. We have all had memorable teachers over the years who have been instrumental not only in equipping us for life, but also in guiding and directing us along the paths we’ve traveled in life. Bless their labor with patience and a gentle spirit, especially as they instruct students coming from broken homes and dealing with challenging family lives. On top of that, rather than serving as supportive partners, overbearing parents can often make an already draining job even more difficult for teachers. Therefore, Lord, generously provide the resources teachers need to carry out their work well, encourage them daily, surround them with plenty of colleagues and coworkers to cheer them on, and let them feel loved and appreciated for all that they do, not just this week, but always.

For the President

Sovereign Lord,
Surround the President of the United States with guidance, wisdom, and maturity through councils, committees, and confidants who genuinely have the best interests of the American people at heart. Grant him the humility to seek and accept direction from others and the confidence to make difficult decisions for the greater good. Move him to lead with integrity and honesty, not seeking to shift blame when wrong, but being quick to take responsibility for poor judgment or mistakes. Help him to learn from his errors so that he is always growing and developing his leadership skills. Bestow on him the ability to demonstrate a gentle and compassionate spirit when necessary, and the willingness to be firm whenever appropriate. Lead him to prioritize prudence over popularity and to exercise discernment to avoid division whenever possible. When the gravity of his responsibilities weighs on him, or his heart is troubled, give him peace of mind. You alone, Lord, know what is in his heart, and you alone can change and transform his heart to suit your perfect purposes. Do so as you see fit, to bless both his leadership and those he leads.

For Those Facing Heavy Decisions

Spirit of Comfort,
Be present for those who find themselves in situations where they need to make hard, heavy decisions. When choices will significantly impact families, finances, and futures, do not let those decisions be rash or hasty. When circumstances require a decision to be made urgently or in a very short timeframe, grant those decision-makers an extra measure of your Spirit, and surround them with wisdom and counsel. When gut-wrenching end-of-life decisions need to be made, let the confidence of the Resurrection and eternal life wash over and calm troubled, anxious hearts. Move believers in the body of Christ to offer the comfort of their presence for those facing emotionally draining decisions, so that they don’t have to make those decisions alone.

For the Blessings of Books and Reading

Good Lord,
Thank you for the blessings of books, literature, and technology that makes the written word accessible in so many ways and forms. As our society becomes more and more visual and video-based, the benefits of reading are being lost. Too many are illiterate or struggle to read. Provide teachers, tutors, and technology to help all who are in need learn to read. 

It has also been said that leaders are readers. Move men everywhere to trade in their gaming consoles and screens for books more frequently. Edify and equip them through the words and wisdom of others, and direct them to put their knowledge into practice. Bless others through their learning and application. Foster in them a love for reading that naturally flows into time in your Word, where you provide the richest blessings of all.

For Wisdom

Lord God,
Grant me wisdom. Each day is filled with countless decisions. While some of them are weightier than others, I want to make good decisions in all areas of life. I can acquire knowledge through books and research, but knowledge requires wisdom to apply it. The world has its own ideas about wisdom, but I desire the wisdom provided by your Spirit and guided by your Word. Enable me to walk wisely in step with your Spirit. Enlighten me through your Scriptures to acquire a wisdom like Solomon, and let the blessing of that wisdom stretch out to reach others, too. May my every use of wisdom reflect any and all glory and honor back to you.
