For Discernment to Uncover the Lies I Believe

Holy Spirit,
Satan is the father of lies. It is therefore no surprise that he retains the same tactics today that brought him success against Adam and Eve and countless others since then. As shameful as it ought to be that he would be so unoriginal and simple-minded, it’s even more embarrassing that I still fall for his lies today. The reason I so often believe his lies is that he is so good at masking them as the truth. Therefore, I ask for discernment to be able to help me expose any lies that I am believing. Use others around me to help detect them and warn me, or to inform me of the possibility of certain lies in my life. Give me the humility to realize that no matter how smart I think I am, the evil one is superior in outsmarting me with seeds of doubt, misinformation, and deception. Then, when the lies I am believing come to the surface and are discovered, empower me to shut them down with the truth of your Word. Let your light pierce any darkness in my life so that I can call out the lies and replace them with truth.

For Hope as We Bear Our Crosses

Lord Jesus,
We know that trials, pain, and suffering are not only unavoidable in a world covered by a constant cloud of sin, but also that we ought to expect them as your disciples. You assure believers that hardships will be littered along our path throughout life as a direct result of our faith in you. So, Lord, rather than ask you to remove what you’ve already told us to expect, we ask you to reinforce us with the hope to endure as we bear these crosses. You have promised that no amount of suffering we’ll ever face is even worth being in the same conversation as the magnificent glory that awaits our eternity with you. And, rather than mere wishful thinking, this present hope we have of a glorious future is steadfast and certain, because it is anchored in the past reality of your suffering, death, and resurrection, which already secured our eternity. Galvanize us with this hope in the face of any cross you call us to bear.

For Growth in Giving

Generous Lord,
You are a Giver. You not only promise to provide all that we need, but are delighted to give it. We, on the other hand, are more naturally takers and receivers. The fall into sin revealed this very attitude, when Adam & Eve were more concerned with taking what they shouldn’t have. Ever since then, we have looked out for ourselves first, and give only after we’re sure we have enough (if we give at all!).

In repentance, rid us of this selfishness and greed. Just as you did not come to be served, but to serve, bend our hearts and will in the same direction – outward before inward. Free us from any enslavement to money or possessions, as well as the fear of not having enough, and cause us to imitate you as generous givers. Grow us into joyful first-fruit givers, worshiping you with our first and best instead of what’s left.

To Free Us From Worry

Gracious God,
We are so prone to worry. Making matters worse, we know full well that you repeatedly tell us in your Word not to worry. We know that you are in control. We know that you promise to work all things out for our good. We know that you promise never to leave or forsake us. Yet, we still worry.

So in addition to needing your forgiveness, we also ask you to work in us to wean us away from worry. Reframe our worst-case-scenario thinking to instead ponder the positives and potential blessings you can bring out of future unknowns. Deepen our trust in your many promises that so beautifully lay out for us all the reasons we have not to worry. Place people around us who speak godliness and goodness into our lives. Shape us into disciples who stand in awe and wonder before you, and rid us of our worry.

For Those Wrestling With a Difficult Decision

Lord God,
Help those who have been wrestling with a difficult decision. There is much wisdom in taking the time to thoroughly think through possibilities and seek the counsel of others. Use your Word to guide them with your insights and perfect promises. Compel them to ask thoughtful questions regarding their decision, and grant them clarity as they pursue the answers. Finally, when they have arrived at the time when the decision is required of them, bless them with peace of mind and confidence in their decision. Let their confidence rest less in the certainty that they made the right decision, and more in the certainty that you are surely able to bring good out of whatever they decide, just as you promise to do for your people.

To Appreciate Adversity

Mighty God,
We don’t pray for hardship or struggle for ourselves or others, yet through them, you discipline us and teach us perseverance. Since these blessings would be rare to come by apart from adversity, thank you for allowing difficulties to come into our lives. Use them to build us up into what you need us to be. Make us resilient and ready for future challenges. Lead us to lean on you and into you for determination and direction.  Stretch our gratitude to more deeply appreciate the degree of suffering you obediently endured in our place.  Change our mindset about struggles into one that welcomes them as learning experiences that pull us in closer to you.

For Trust in Marriages

Loving Lord,
Trust is foundational to any healthy marriage. When husbands and wives trust each other, their relationship thrives. But once that trust is lost or broken, it is not easily restored. Therefore, guide spouses to be thoughtful about how their words and actions create trust. It isn’t built accidentally or automatically, but deliberately. Steer them away from half-truths, questionable or unwise behavior, and a lack of boundaries with the opposite sex. Instill honest communication, transparency, and truth in their relationship. Lead husbands, who often tend to be light on words and communication, to consider how their lack of communication can raise doubt or uncertainty for their wife. Help wives to speak their intentions clearly to their husband and not say one thing while meaning something else, mistakenly assuming their husband can read their minds. Grant husbands and wives the continuous desire to actively pursue each other, so that as their affection and connection grow, so does their trust. And ultimately, Lord, increase their trust in you, which will also deepen their trust in each other.

For Those Feeling the Weight of Worry

Powerful Lord God,
We are often overwhelmed by worry. Some have difficulty imagining anything other than worst-case scenarios playing out in their lives. At that level, virtually anything all day long can be cause for concern. Such worry is not only harmful physically, but it also fertilizes the seeds of doubt that seek validation when worries play out as the worrier feared. That kind of worry turns us from, not to you, Lord.  

Remind those weighed down by worry that you are always in control, and that you promise to bring good out of all things. You will always deliver us from harm, either around it altogether, through it to the other side, or home to heaven as a result of it. With that confidence, we have nothing to fear. Suffocate our worry with a deeper trust in your Word, where we learn to lean on your promises and where our troubled hearts find peace in you.

To Work on My Weaknesses While Also Embracing Them

Sanctifying Spirit,
You bless us with unique talents and abilities, and have created us to be strong-suited in certain areas of life. Thank you for the unique ways you enable us to use our gifts to serve and contribute meaningfully. Just as each of us has strengths, we are also aware of our weaknesses. In those areas of weakness in which we can grow, give us the drive to do so, since our lives in Christ compel us to give our best as we focus on growth and personal development over the course of our lives. Give us a healthy desire for improvement, without crossing the line into perfectionism. Help us also see the blessings of weaknesses, for when we are weak, we are reminded that you are strong. Being aware of my weaknesses helps sustain my humility, which in turn leads me to lean even more on you for strength. So, while I work to grow and develop where I am weak, balance that effort in me with a deeper appreciation for all the ways you generously provide wherever and whatever I am lacking.

For the President

Sovereign Lord,
Surround the President of the United States with guidance, wisdom, and maturity through councils, committees, and confidants who genuinely have the best interests of the American people at heart. Grant him the humility to seek and accept direction from others and the confidence to make difficult decisions for the greater good. Move him to lead with integrity and honesty, not seeking to shift blame when wrong, but being quick to take responsibility for poor judgment or mistakes. Help him to learn from his errors so that he is always growing and developing his leadership skills. Bestow on him the ability to demonstrate a gentle and compassionate spirit when necessary, and the willingness to be firm whenever appropriate. Lead him to prioritize prudence over popularity and to exercise discernment to avoid division whenever possible. When the gravity of his responsibilities weighs on him, or his heart is troubled, give him peace of mind. You alone, Lord, know what is in his heart, and you alone can change and transform his heart to suit your perfect purposes. Do so as you see fit, to bless both his leadership and those he leads.
