For Whatever I Need to Better Help My Neighbor

Loving Lord,
You call on us so many times in Scripture to serve our neighbor in so many different ways, and the good news of the gospel works in us the desire to do just that. Since you promise to provide us with whatever we need to carry out what you direct us to do, I pray that you give me the understanding to determine the needs of others. Prompt me to ask thoughtful questions when needs arise and to listen carefully to responses. Increase my emotional intelligence and social awareness to be able to read between the lines when necessary. Connect me with a strong network of friends and acquaintances who have both the means and the desire to support those requiring help. Use me as a conduit of your compassion and care for others. 

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

To Be a Friend to Others

Friend of Sinners,
Men tend to isolate and keep to themselves more naturally than women. While there is nothing wrong with this on occasion, it shouldn’t be the norm. You created us to be relational creatures, and when overlook that reality, we miss out on many of the blessings that come along with friendships and connections with others. 

Grant me the self-awareness to know when I have been avoiding others or am keeping to myself for unhealthy periods of time. Even if it is out of my comfort zone, lead me to seek out social time and pursue friendships. And, help me be a friend to others. Keep me socially aware and tuned in so that I recognize when others may be isolating or avoiding people. If there isn’t a natural reason for it, give me the courage to check in with them and make sure they’re OK. Give me ears that are ready to listen when others need to talk, and lips filled with wisdom if the occasion calls for it. Give me your heart, Lord, so that I am willing to be a friend to others according to their needs.

For Shared Social Events

Kind Father,
Thank you for social events and gatherings that bring people together to enjoy. An annual event like the Super Bowl provides us with opportunities to connect and laugh together as human beings. Regardless of the outcome, experiences involving food, friends, and the fellowship shared together are gifts from you that I can easily overlook. Thank you for these events you place into our lives often simply to gladden our hearts and bring us joy.

When we engage with one another at events like this, you often open doors for us to check in and catch up with friends and family, and even meet new people. These interactions can make us aware of little moments to encourage or uplift others and informally serve needs they may have. But even if those windows of opportunity don’t open, we are every bit as grateful for positive experiences like these to lift our spirits and share good times with others. These, too, are gifts of kindness from your generous hand. Thank you for them.
