DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

To Love and Care for My Body and Life

Loving Father,
While I acknowledge that I am fearfully and wonderfully made, I must confess that I do not always reflect that in how I take care of – or rather neglect – my body. Indeed, if the attention and care I give to my physical health serve to indicate how much I value my body and life, I am embarrassed to admit the conclusion anyone would have to draw. I am sorry. Forgive me.

Thankfully, that is exactly what you do: forgive me. I do not live under shame or guilt, but under grace. You do not delight in finding fault, but in forgiving. The new life you daily call me to live in through my baptism is not merely spiritual, but flows into the blessing of physical as well. Since you redeemed not just my soul, but my body as well, steer me away from viewing it pessimistically or speaking of it pejoratively, and elevate how I view my own body. Whatever size and shape it is, help me to embrace and love it as you do – a gift to be cared for. Instill in me a healthy mindset that celebrates progress over perfection regarding exercise, working out, and anything that seeks to avoid being overly sedentary. Thank you for my body and life, and for the godly desire to treasure and care for them.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

For Healthy Drinking Habits

Dear Lord,
Keep me honest when it comes to my relationship with alcohol. Being aware of my susceptibility to self-deception regarding my drinking habits is essential for maintaining control. When I convince myself that addictions or alcoholism are only problems other people have, I’ve already let my guard down and have become vulnerable. Let me be aware of signs of concern, help me establish healthy boundaries and limitations for myself, and give me the courage to permit others to provide additional guardrails of accountability. Through these channels, shield me from ever normalizing excessive drinking, and allow alcohol to remain a blessing in the area of Christian freedom, always enjoyed in moderation. Remind me regularly that even eating and drinking are done to your glory.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

For Mental Health

Wonderful Counselor,
The month of May is recognized by many as a time to bring awareness to mental health. What a wonderful reminder that we are fearfully and wonderfully made in body, mind, and spirit! As the crown of your creation, you created mankind in such a unique way, so that our physical, mental, and spiritual health are all interconnected. When any one area suffers, the others are affected. We thank you therefore, for those with expertise in mental health who desire to help others in this area. Bless them with knowledge and insight regarding how the amazing minds you’ve given us allow us to think and process, and how connected our thoughts are to our actions and general well-being. Since a secular approach to mental health will naturally lack the all-important connection to spiritual health, provide that awareness through solid spiritual leaders who are well-equipped to point people to your powerful promises. Then, Lord, use those gracious promises to provide a rock-solid foundation for many as the basis for resilient mental health.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

For Those Battling Bitterness

Prince of Peace,
I approach your throne of grace today on behalf of all who are consumed by bitterness and anger. When isolation becomes more frequent, spoken responses are short and sharp, and social media posts are filled with negativity and animosity, those are often outward expressions of internal turmoil. Lead friends and family members to recognize such signs as an opportunity to check in and offer whatever help they can. A listening ear can go a long way, Lord. Use whatever means necessary to root out resentment in those who are struggling, and replace it with real peace of mind. We know that such peace comes from knowing the One who has overcome the trouble we face in this world. Make him known to those battling bitterness, so they can know what it’s like to be free from it.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

To Be Mindful of My Physical Health on the Weekends

Gracious Lord,
Weekends can be challenging when it comes to my physical health. During the weekdays, when daily routines are in place, eating healthy and staying active or working out come more naturally. I find it easier to stay on track with my health goals when that structure is in place. Weekends, however, can throw off those healthy patterns and plans that are in place Monday through Friday.

Since my actions and behaviors follow my thinking, give me a healthy mindset leading up to and during the weekends. Keep me from viewing weekends as some sort of reward for good behavior during the week, where I can disregard healthy habits and good choices. Rather than seeing the weekend as a break to treat myself and indulge, give me a more balanced perspective to appreciate its flexibility and freedom, allowing me to enjoy the pleasures of food and drink in moderation. In place of regular workouts, let me find satisfaction in fun, active alternatives that keep me from remaining sedentary all weekend. Grant me also the contentment of allowing the weekend to provide my body and mind with the necessary rest and margin I need as well.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

To Prioritize Physical Fitness

Mighty God,
Spiritually speaking, you are and always will be my rock and my source of strength. Whether I am struggling with weakness in temptation or wavering in trust, your strength is the solution.

But the blessing of strength is not limited merely to the spiritual. You have also given us flesh and blood bodies capable of growing physically strong. Since we are called to take care of everything that you have entrusted to us, our physical bodies are surely included. The many benefits of exercise and physical fitness are well-documented, and since we desire to maximize the time you graciously give us here on earth in service to you and others, we therefore want to strive to be in good shape.

Make our physical health a priority for us. Help us to be disciplined when it comes to any physical activity, realizing that something is always better than nothing. Make us as willing to push our bodies as we are to pamper them. Keep us from being stationary or overly sedentary for extended lengths of time. Along with a faith that moves mountains, grant us also a body that moves as well as you designed it to.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

To Care for My Body

Incarnate Christ,
I marvel that you took on a body to satisfy the law and secure my righteousness through your perfect life of obedience. But you didn’t stop there! You offered up that very same human body as the unblemished sacrifice for all sin on Good Friday. Finally, you brought that lifeless body back from the dead three days later, just as you promised. Now you oversee all things for my benefit in that glorious body until you reveal it again on the Last Day.

Through all of this work you redeemed not just my soul, but my body as well. Surely this shows how highly you regard your gift of a body that you entrust to all people! Let me have that same high regard for my body. Too often we think too little of our bodies, rather than viewing them as the holy temple with which you have blessed us. Help me to see my physical body as a means by which I honor and thank you, and to tend to it in a way that aligns with this view. Since I also love and serve others with my body, I want to care for it and manage my health in a way that allows me to function optimally for as many years as you grant me on earth.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

To Care for My Body

Almighty God,
We are fearfully and wonderfully made. The more we discover about our bodies and how marvelously you have designed them to function, the more in awe of you we are. Not only are we as human beings the crown of your creation, but you also showed how highly you regard our physical bodies through your incarnation, clothing yourself in flesh and blood! Help me to remember that my body is a gift from you, and just like all gifts that you give, you entrust them to us to manage and care for in ways that honor you.

While you are responsible for numbering my days, I want to do everything I can to protect and preserve the physical body you’ve given me. Give me wisdom regarding my diet and curb my appetite and desire for food that can negatively impact my health in the short or long-term. Guard me from being overly sedentary and instill in me the discipline to exercise and/or maintain a reasonable level of physical activity. Lead me to establish a daily routine that also allows for adequate sleep each night, enabling my body to receive the rest and recovery time it needs to function at an optimal level. All of this I ask so that I may glorify you and effectively serve my neighbor with a healthy body for as long as you determine.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
