For Those You’ve Used to Help Me

Caring Father,
It’s so easy for us to forget or overlook the ways you have used others throughout our lives to help us along the way. No one gets to where they are in life without the aid and assistance of others. You provide others to be there to help us learn and show us how to do certain things. You give others listening ears to walk us through problems. Some have been instrumental in connecting us with other people who have been a blessing to us. Many have prayed for us more than we’ll ever know. Thank you for placing considerate and helpful individuals in my life to guide and support me in such meaningful ways. You have used them to lead me to experience how much you truly care about me.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

For Good Neighbors

Dear Jesus,
Thank you for the gift of neighbors. Good neighbors look out for each other in unique and meaningful ways. They help us out when we’re in a pinch. They keep a watchful eye over house and home while we are away. They are often the first responders in an emergency. They lend us items to help us get jobs done. They assist with projects. Good neighbors are a treasure. Lead us to thank them regularly, while also striving to be the good neighbor we hope to see in others. As we do, help us also view these meaningful relationships as ripe mission fields. Open doors for us to witness to our neighbors so that we might lead them to you.

For the Blessing of Reuniting

Lord God,
We are so blessed to have those we love and care about in our lives, who also love and care about us in return. Some of those people are under our own roof, and others are far away. You spoil us with so much technology that enables us to keep in touch and even see one another from long distances. Yet even with all of that, nothing tops being able to be physically face-to-face with dear family and friends, so thank you for any occasions that allow for joyful reunions after time apart. Whether it’s an opportunity to stop in for a quick hello on the way to somewhere else or an extended stay together, we’re grateful. Reuniting with loved ones fills our hearts – through hugs, catching up, laughter, and memories both made and remembered together. May we always cherish the blessing of reunions.

To Know When to Show Up for Others

Lord God,
As a believer, I recognize the importance of social events and gatherings that provide opportunities to make new connections with others and strengthen existing relationships. This is not only valuable within the body of Christ, but also essential for those outside the Church – so that through believers, they may come to know their Savior and, Lord-willing, come to faith in him. I often struggle with being at peace over when to show up on such occasions and when it is acceptable to sit them out. Sometimes I attend out of a sense of obligation or guilt; other times I feel guilty for not attending and staying home.

Help me sort through the motivations of my heart in such situations. Free me from the burden of guilt that isn’t mine to carry. On the other hand, when I am being selfish or uncaring about others, expose that in me so that I see it and am aware of it. When pride and false assurance compel me to show up because I convince myself that you need someone like me to carry out the relational work that could arise in certain scenarios, let me know it. Guide me to maintain a healthy balance in discerning when it is good and right to attend such social situations, and when it is perfectly OK not to, so that my decisions and management of your gift of time honor you.

To Uplift and Encourage Others

Loving Lord,
We never know the full extent of the burdens others are carrying at any given moment. We do know the constant negativity and collateral damage of living in a fallen world takes its toll on us. Therefore, help me go out of my way to speak words of positivity and encouragement to others. Use my kind words and gestures to lift up spirits and cheer up those who are down. A simple smile or friendly expression can go a long way, and it doesn’t cost me a thing. When I realize such a small, deliberate gesture may be all it takes to turn someone’s whole day around, move me to jump at any chance I have to make a difference. Furthermore, when I am intentional about encouraging others in these ways, it tends to improve my own mood as well. And, as I do so, I reflect more of you to a world that needs just that: more of you.

To Be a Friend to Others

Friend of Sinners,
Men tend to isolate and keep to themselves more naturally than women. While there is nothing wrong with this on occasion, it shouldn’t be the norm. You created us to be relational creatures, and when overlook that reality, we miss out on many of the blessings that come along with friendships and connections with others. 

Grant me the self-awareness to know when I have been avoiding others or am keeping to myself for unhealthy periods of time. Even if it is out of my comfort zone, lead me to seek out social time and pursue friendships. And, help me be a friend to others. Keep me socially aware and tuned in so that I recognize when others may be isolating or avoiding people. If there isn’t a natural reason for it, give me the courage to check in with them and make sure they’re OK. Give me ears that are ready to listen when others need to talk, and lips filled with wisdom if the occasion calls for it. Give me your heart, Lord, so that I am willing to be a friend to others according to their needs.

For the Blessing of Companionship

Dear God,
When you created Adam, you led him to the realization that something was missing. Then you created Eve, his perfect companion. For a brief time, their companionship was perfect. Then, everything came crashing down as a result of sin. Now our motives for companionship are often self-serving and sinful. Companionship itself, even in best-case scenarios, is a far cry from your ideal.

Nevertheless, companionship is a good and pleasing gift from you, and desired by many. Bless those who have someone with whom to share experiences – both the joys and the griefs. Lead them to appreciate and treasure what they have. Give to those without companions either a spirit of contentment and satisfaction with their lot in life, or a willingness to continue the pursuit with persistence until they find someone. Finally, help us all to appreciate the enduring companionship we have with you now and for eternity.

To Check In With Others

Lord God,
As guys, we tend to prioritize problem-solving and getting things done. When others share with us the challenges going on in their lives, we focus on fixing things and making them right. This can be a great blessing to others when they come to us looking for that kind of help.

What isn’t always natural for us is to think about others, take the initiative, and check in with them to see how they’re doing. We tend to keep to ourselves and give our attention to projects more than people. It isn’t that we don’t care about others; it just doesn’t occur to us to touch base with them regularly. 

Help me to be more mindful of that. I know there are people you’ve placed in my life who are going through new or challenging seasons in their own lives. Prompt me to call or text them more frequently, not necessarily to see what might need fixing, but simply to let them know they are cared for and supported. Regular check-ins like this can help combat the isolation and loneliness that others may be experiencing. And, the benefits go both ways, as you often use others to bless us unexpectedly through these meaningful interactions, too.

To Bless My Friendships

Friend of Sinners,
I thank you for knowing me and for making yourself known to me. Not only are you my Savior and my God, but you also call yourself my Friend. As such, you are always available to me. You are concerned with my well-being and genuinely desire to spend time together. You speak to me through your Word and listen to my prayers. You are there for me.

Bless the friendships that I have with others in the same way. Thank you for those who have time for me and always seem to make time for me when I especially need it. Let me also make time for them in the same way. Thank you for providing others to listen and talk certain things through when I need it. Let me also do the same for others. Thank you for shared interests and rich experiences that provide outlets for leisure and enjoyment. Provide me with friends who highly regard their faith. But, also open doors to future friendships with those who don’t yet know you, but may eventually come to as a result of our friendship. When I consider the qualities of friendship that I value and desire, help me also exhibit those qualities myself. Help me to be the friend to others that I want to see in others.

For Blessing on Our Friendships

Friend of Sinners,
Thank you for the gift of friendship. You bring people into our lives who share common interests, delight in the same joys, and celebrate similar wins together with us. Friends heighten the highs in our lives and lighten the lows. 

Forgive us for when we have been short with our friends or treated them in ways that have hurt them. Help us, as far as we are able, to repair any damage that we have caused in these relationships. Restore us, rebuilding any trust that has been broken, and repair the bond we once had. 

It is because of your saving work on our behalf that you no longer consider us slaves, but friends. Enable us to be for others the kind of friend to be held in the highest regard, and continue to richly bless all of our friendships.
