For Patience in Marriage

Patient Lord,
Patience truly is a virtue. Unfortunately, it seems to be becoming increasingly rare. We expect others to exercise patience when dealing with us, but we don’t consistently reciprocate the same courtesy. While patience is valuable in many areas of life and society, one of the most valuable is within marriage. The ugly reality of many marriages is that spouses have a shorter fuse with each other than they do with anyone else. A lack of patience in marriage is destructive. When husbands and wives become impatient with each other, they become irritated and irrational. That impatience then gradually suffocates healthy communication and turns allies into enemies. Therefore, Lord, extend an extra measure of your patience into those marriages that desperately need it. Help husbands and wives pause to reflect on how patiently you deal with them individually, even though, as sinners, every day they are rebellious repeat offenders against you. Let your patience and forgiveness toward them sink in, then equip them to extend that patience to the spouse they’ve committed the rest of their lives to loving and serving.

For Spouses to Keep Their Word

Committed Savior,
Trust within a marriage is forged over years of honesty and faithfulness to each other. Another significant contributor to solidifying that trust between spouses is daily keeping their word to each other – in the large things as well as the little. Projects need to get planned and carried out, bills have to be paid on time, honey-do lists and chores are always necessary, dates and intimacy are assured, and so much more. When husbands and wives follow through and do the things they say they will do, they know they can depend on each other. When promises made to each other go regularly unkept, however, trust erodes. One spouse’s regular inability to follow through can leave the other skeptical or resentful. Therefore, when husbands and wives give their word to each other, lead them to take their commitments seriously and to follow through with their word in loving service to the other.

For Those Getting Married This Summer

Lord of Love,
I ask you to bless the weddings scheduled over the course of the summer months. Let your hand guide the plans that are still in motion, so that everything goes as smoothly as possible for so many on their special day. Yet, even when there are hiccups or disappointments, equip the bride and groom with the resiliency to manage them, since they will inevitably encounter similar discouragements together in their marriage as well. Fill husband and wife with so much mutual joy and elation over each other that any slip-ups are easily overshadowed and forgotten. Cause their hearts to swell with gratitude as they experience your goodness. See that the message in the ceremony highlights the necessity and blessing of growing a marriage around you, centering it on your perfect obedience for them and building it on the foundation of the cross and empty tomb. Let such marriages be conduits of your love, overflowing with boundless grace and unlimited forgiveness, so that they beautifully mirror your loving, sacrificial devotion to your Church.

To Give Myself More Fully

Mighty God,
From the first word of creation, you have given yourself fully to your creation. You held nothing back in gifting us an absolutely stunning world and universe. Then, your commitment leapt to unimaginable heights through the incarnation, when you, the Creator, inserted yourself into creation as the God-man, Jesus Christ. Leaving nothing in the tank, you poured yourself out fully for all people as our Suffering Servant, the perfect sacrifice for sin.

Inspired by your commitment to me, I want to give myself more fully to you. Too often I play small. Frequently I treat your gift of time like an endless commodity, putting off priorities in favor of laziness or leisure. Replace such tendencies with a yearning desire to make a difference, to maximize my abilities and your gifts to enrich and bless those around me. And, since service in your kingdom reaps eternal blessings, use me in as many ways as possible to build it up and extend it.
