To Extend Hospitality to Others

Friend of Sinners,
In our rushed, always-on-the-go lives, failing to slow down isn’t just unhealthy for us; it also affects our neighbor negatively – not necessarily by what we do, but by what we leave undone. Constant busyness and scrambling to keep up with stacked schedules leaves precious little time for hospitality. We easily overlook and neglect our neighbor’s needs when we allow little or no margin in our lives. Sometimes we even justify avoiding others on the basis of our busyness. Help us pause and ponder. Make us aware of those you’ve placed before us to whom we can show kindness, welcoming them into our lives with genuine friendliness and hospitable hearts. As we share our blessings and belongings with others whenever the chances arise, we show them how valued they are as we put love into action.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

To Remember Those Dealing with Disabilities

Compassionate Lord,
In your loving care, provide protection and pathways for those dealing with any sort of physical limitations. We gratefully acknowledge the many advancements that exist today to aid people dealing with disabilities, and celebrate the doors that have been opened as a result. Nevertheless, these blessings are not available to everyone everywhere. And, even where they are available, real daily struggles still present challenges for so many. Help us, in Christian love, to strike a balance between respecting independence and offering care and assistance when possible. Grant us understanding minds and compassionate hearts, so that we are always looking out for our neighbors in need, and make us willing to befriend and bless them accordingly. In turn, use their resiliency, resolve, and determination to inspire and encourage others, being a blessing to them as well.

For Those You’ve Used to Help Me

Caring Father,
It’s so easy for us to forget or overlook the ways you have used others throughout our lives to help us along the way. No one gets to where they are in life without the aid and assistance of others. You provide others to be there to help us learn and show us how to do certain things. You give others listening ears to walk us through problems. Some have been instrumental in connecting us with other people who have been a blessing to us. Many have prayed for us more than we’ll ever know. Thank you for placing considerate and helpful individuals in my life to guide and support me in such meaningful ways. You have used them to lead me to experience how much you truly care about me.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

For Godparents to Be a Blessing to Their Godchildren

Lord of the Church,
Godly godparents may be some of the most under-appreciated gifts you give believers. Christian parents may not always take advantage of the blessed tradition of choosing godparents, or they may not give much prayerful deliberation to their choice if they do. Godparents, too, may overlook or neglect their important roles. Nevertheless, guide your church to retain this practice, to expand its awareness, and to heighten its importance. Your little baptized saints growing up in the world today are in as much need of prayer and spiritual care as ever. Place godchildren on the hearts of their godparents regularly. Direct them to your throne of grace on their behalf, and lead them to welcome and embrace the role of helping disciple their godchildren in every way possible.

To Prioritize Spiritual Health in Marriage

Caring Savior,
In marriage, your intent for husband and wife is not only to bring them together physically and emotionally, but also spiritually. In fact, when they share a deep spiritual bond together with you, it sets the tone for all other aspects of their relationship. While it isn’t uncommon for spouses to feel frustrated when it comes to challenges regarding sexual or emotional intimacy, they often fail to see how much the role of spiritual intimacy plays into it. If we are not close to you, we often lack the tools necessary to cultivate deeper intimacy with each other. Understanding, patience, compassion, care, grace, selflessness – such qualities are not naturally found or fostered within us, but rather find their source in you. Therefore, help husbands and wives make their time together with you their priority. Then, as you work grace and forgiveness in them through your Word, you also equip them with what is needed to lovingly, selflessly put spouse before self, just as you, Lord, did with us.

To Defend and Protect Others

Strong Father,
You created and called us to come to the defense of others – to protect those in danger and intervene on behalf of those who are victims of wrongdoing. When we stand idly by and do nothing, or pass off the responsibility to someone else, others are hurt and harmed because of our passivity. Forgive us for our indifference and our failure to lean into the responsibilities that are ours to carry out. Spur on mature and godly men to lead by example for the next generation. Raise up young men to disconnect from distractions and actively engage in the world around them. Fill men everywhere with faith and fortitude to look out for others. Make them vigilant and willing to do whatever is in their power when the safety and security of others calls for it.

For Good Neighbors

Dear Jesus,
Thank you for the gift of neighbors. Good neighbors look out for each other in unique and meaningful ways. They help us out when we’re in a pinch. They keep a watchful eye over house and home while we are away. They are often the first responders in an emergency. They lend us items to help us get jobs done. They assist with projects. Good neighbors are a treasure. Lead us to thank them regularly, while also striving to be the good neighbor we hope to see in others. As we do, help us also view these meaningful relationships as ripe mission fields. Open doors for us to witness to our neighbors so that we might lead them to you.

For the Blessing of Reuniting

Lord God,
We are so blessed to have those we love and care about in our lives, who also love and care about us in return. Some of those people are under our own roof, and others are far away. You spoil us with so much technology that enables us to keep in touch and even see one another from long distances. Yet even with all of that, nothing tops being able to be physically face-to-face with dear family and friends, so thank you for any occasions that allow for joyful reunions after time apart. Whether it’s an opportunity to stop in for a quick hello on the way to somewhere else or an extended stay together, we’re grateful. Reuniting with loved ones fills our hearts – through hugs, catching up, laughter, and memories both made and remembered together. May we always cherish the blessing of reunions.

To Love and Care for My Body and Life

Loving Father,
While I acknowledge that I am fearfully and wonderfully made, I must confess that I do not always reflect that in how I take care of – or rather neglect – my body. Indeed, if the attention and care I give to my physical health serve to indicate how much I value my body and life, I am embarrassed to admit the conclusion anyone would have to draw. I am sorry. Forgive me.

Thankfully, that is exactly what you do: forgive me. I do not live under shame or guilt, but under grace. You do not delight in finding fault, but in forgiving. The new life you daily call me to live in through my baptism is not merely spiritual, but flows into the blessing of physical as well. Since you redeemed not just my soul, but my body as well, steer me away from viewing it pessimistically or speaking of it pejoratively, and elevate how I view my own body. Whatever size and shape it is, help me to embrace and love it as you do – a gift to be cared for. Instill in me a healthy mindset that celebrates progress over perfection regarding exercise, working out, and anything that seeks to avoid being overly sedentary. Thank you for my body and life, and for the godly desire to treasure and care for them.

For Wandering Sheep

Good Shepherd,
You care for the sheep of your flock more deeply than anyone could ever imagine. When your sheep wander, concern for their spiritual welfare and their safe return weighs heavily on your heart. Let this same concern be shared by the rest of your flock. Prompt fellow believers to move beyond a casual curiosity when their brothers and sisters have been absent from worship or disengaged from their church at length. Compel them to personally take the initiative to reach out to those who may be straying, and offer encouragement when appropriate, or correction as needed. Cause the sheep of your flock to care for each other, so that together with their pastor, you might grant success to their rescue efforts. Bring wayward believers back into the safety of the flock and the spiritual care of their pastor, so that they might know and experience the radical love of their Good Shepherd once more.
