For the Opportunity to Worship

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred. Thank you for the freedom and accessibility to gather for worship regularly. In the United States, it is easily taken for granted that we have an abundance of Christian churches at which we can worship. While their theology varies, the blessing of even being able to hear the Bible read is not a given in parts of the world. You also provide the freedom to worship without fear of repercussion or threat to our physical lives. Finally, you even provide multiple means of transportation that enable us to attend worship in person. Lead us to demonstrate our gratitude through our frequent attendance, and strengthen and stretch our faith through your Word as it is read, preached, and served through the sacraments.  

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

For Peace and Calm

Prince of Peace,
Be present with me when I am feeling anxious and unsettled. Sometimes when I experience these feelings, I know exactly where they’re coming from; other times, though, I can’t determine the source of them or understand why they spring up. Whether or not I know their cause, however, I know that you are the solution. 

When I feel like I am not in control of any given situation, calm my uncertainties with the assurance that you are. You promise to weave everything in my life for my eternal good. When I am worried, take my worry and make it captive instead to a stalwart trust in your providence over all of creation and in my individual life. Replace my worst-case scenario thinking with a fear-shattering faith that is eager to see the blessings you are able to bring out of every circumstance. Let my confidence of your governance over all things cover me with a blanket of peace and calm.

For Your Protection

Almighty God,
Thank you for the many ways you provide me with protection on a daily basis. There are so many standards and safeguards incorporated into things like construction permits, product manufacturing, transportation & travel, and so much more, that are all designed with people’s safety in mind. Though so few of them are ever even on my radar, thank you for them!

I also thank you for the people who serve in so many different capacities to offer me protection and care. Our military protects our nation from foreign and domestic threats. Police are dedicated to protecting and serving citizens from danger, often putting their own lives on the line. Firemen, too, put their lives at risk to rescue lives and extinguish burning buildings and wildfires. First responders can often be the difference between life and death for those seriously injured. ER doctors and nurses make life-saving decisions in an instant. As I reflect on all of these ways by which you guard and protect me, I am filled with gratitude. Thank you, Lord!

For Those Grieving Sudden Death

Loving Savior,
Be with those experiencing the sudden, unexpected death of a loved one or dear friend. While we have the confident hope of eternal life for fellow believers, the surprise of such a loss can feel like a sucker punch, leaving us gasping for air. When someone’s physical presence no longer fills a home, it feels empty. When their unique mannerisms disappear, a piece of the normalcy in our lives disappears, too. When their catch phrases or common sayings are no longer expressed at the moments we expect them, we are painfully reminded they aren’t here with us anymore. 

Dull the sting of death with the assurance of reunion through the Resurrection. Replace pain with your peace and direct heavy hearts to the light yoke of rest we have in you. Surround grieving family and friends with a support system of caring individuals to listen and to comfort as needed. Over time, shift the sadness of loss into gratitude for the time of life that was shared and spent together. Through the precious promises of your Word, bring healthy healing to all who are hurting and console and restore weary spirits as only you can.

To Curb Perfectionism

Holy God,
I want to give my best in all that I do for you. However, sometimes my desire to do things well reaches unhealthy perfectionist tendencies. When I allow perfectionism to take hold, it can become crippling. Even more dangerous, perfectionism can be a form of idolatry when my purpose and priorities hinge on it. 

Help me to maintain a healthy balance between striving to do things well and being consumed with perfection. Guide me to manage time, energy, and resources to match expected outcomes so that I am not investing more than is required or necessary for any given responsibility. Let me find satisfaction and contentment with simply doing my best with the time and resources allotted. Free me from the bondage of my own perfectionism and lead me instead to find peace in your perfection on my behalf.

To Give My Best

Dear Lord,
Whatever tasks I have before me today, help me to accomplish them well. While certain obligations may carry more significance than others, everything I do is an act of worship, an opportunity to give my best as a thank you for your never-ending goodness.

For that reason, help me to avoid settling for mediocrity in areas in which I can do better or even excel. Keep me from a “good enough” attitude when a little more time or effort would improve the quality of whatever I am offering or accomplishing. When I give my best not just in the big things, but the little things as well, I reflect your worth to me. As I serve others, remind me that I am serving you, and you always deserve my best.

For Faithful Follow Through

As another week begins, there are always tasks to accomplish and to-do lists to check off. Whether big or small, it can often be a challenge to follow through with my responsibilities and commitments. When my thoughts gravitate toward procrastination, replace them with the drive to get things done. Help me finish what I start and not start things I can’t finish. Keep me from spinning a narrative in my own head that attempts to excuse or soften my lack of follow through. Instead, let me be honest and real with myself regarding what I can and cannot take on and accomplish. Make me disciplined in what matters most, especially anything that fosters my spiritual growth. Give me the dedication of Jesus, which he demonstrated when he resolutely followed through with every detail necessary for my salvation.

To Bless Gospel Preaching

Lord of the Church,
Sundays are sacred. On no other day do so many Christians gather together at once to be served the soul-food of the gospel. Since the gospel – the good news of salvation that is ours through faith in Jesus – not only brings us to faith, but also keeps us in the faith, see that it is clearly preached and taught. Grant preachers the clarity not only to be understood, but also to avoid being misunderstood when it comes to the good news.

Remove all barriers of unclear language, confusing illustrations, unrelated storytelling, and anything else that might obscure the gospel. Spur preachers on through the power of your gospel, so that they are energized and excited to point their hearers to Jesus, and worshipers are spared from lazy and lifeless preaching. Let the good news predominate in all worship everywhere, so that the body of Christ may be built up in faith and well-equipped for Christian living.

For Husbands

Lord and Savior,
When you willingly endured not only the cross, but also the ridicule, the abuse, and the punishment that preceded it, you showed us what sacrifice looks like. So when you call husbands to love their wives sacrificially, as you loved the church and gave yourself up for her, we have a standard for which to strive. 

Raise up husbands to not only speak lovingly to their wives, but to show it by their actions. Move them to meet their needs. Lead them to provide safety and security. Help them to foster a relationship with their wives that is open and honest, where struggles can be shared and successes celebrated. Let them find joy in being present and delight in connecting with their wives on a deeper level. Bless their intimacy and let their wives be for them the standard of beauty and attraction. Build them up as spiritual examples, making the most of every opportunity to model repentance and extend grace to others. Grant them unwavering trust in you and joy in serving their wives fully.

For My Freedom in Christ

Loving Redeemer,
Through your saving work, you have freed us from the eternal consequences of sin, the dreaded fear of death, and the stranglehold of Satan. We are no longer helpless slaves resigned to a life of servitude to sin. We are free!

Instill in me the daily determination simply to bask in the joy of the freedom you won for me. But don’t stop there. Lead me to use the very freedom you gave me as a means by which I can show my gratitude. I am free to speak to you in prayer and to ponder the promises of your Word. I am free to celebrate the freedom I share with other believers every week in worship. I am free to find genuine purpose, satisfaction, and fulfillment in helping and serving other people according to their needs. I am free to generously support kingdom work financially as you enable me to. I am free to point others to your saving work on their behalf. I am free, and I love the freedom you gave me – thank you!
