To Marvel at the Mystery of the Trinity

Triune God,
Sundays are sacred. On this Sunday, many Christian churches focus on the mystery of the Trinity. We marvel not only at the complexity of this teaching, but also the comfort it brings us. That you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – yet one God, not three – should work in perfect harmony to accomplish your unified goal of my salvation, leaves me amazed by your gracious love and divine direction for my life and eternity. When I struggle with doubt and confusion, failing to make sense of you as my triune God, let this teaching remind me that you are on your own divine level. The Creator does not need to explain himself to the created, as if I could grasp your glorious wonder anyway. Instead, keep me in reverent awe of you. Let the Church continue to faithfully confess you, the true and triune God, always. 

In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

For Those Trapped in False Religions

Holy Redeemer,
You alone know the total number of those who are currently ensnared by false religions. Regardless of the cult, religion, belief, or practice, if it does not cling to you alone as the way, the truth, and the life by which we are saved, it will ultimately lead to death. By your almighty power, free all who are being led astray by twisted teachings and false teachers. Expose them to your Word, and through the work of the Holy Spirit, lead them out of darkness into your wonderful light. Replace misleading and destructive error with the delight of what is right and true. Discard doubt and uncertainty with the assurance of forgiveness and eternal life that come only through faith in you. Let them know and experience the stunning joy of salvation, and awaken them to the pleasure of a life of purpose in you.

To Guard Me From Hypocrisy

Loving Savior,
When it comes to hypocrites, or false believers, you didn’t mince words when warning them of condemnation while here on earth. And rightly so! Not only were they outside of the kingdom of God, but they also threatened others by potentially leading them astray and outside of your kingdom as well. 

Although we are not hypocrites in the strict biblical sense of being false believers, we do find ourselves acting hypocritically. We know your Word and will well enough, and do not hesitate to point out to others when they fail to live by it, but we ourselves can’t keep from breaking it. Lead us always to repentance when we are aware of this (and even when we’re not!), and guide us to grasp the importance of striving to match our words and our actions so that our hypocrisy would never turn others away from you. Rather than displaying a pharisaical hypocrisy, let your grace always abound and be evident both in me and through me.

To Prioritize What Is Praiseworthy

Sanctifying Spirit,
Whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, or praiseworthy – lead me to think about such things (Philippians 4:8). There is so much all around me that isn’t necessarily wrong or sinful, but neither does it fit the description of positive things on which to direct my attention. In a culture that is completely comfortable with and permissive of sex, violence, horror, and gore, I want to swim against the current. Help me to guard my heart against foolish FOMO when it involves glorifying anything that fails to bring you glory.

While I know that many voices – even those of my brothers in the faith – may downplay or diminish my choices for a variety of reasons, grant me a resolute spirit of determination to stay strong and stay the course. Grant me the self-control to not only care for my own soul in this way, but to inspire and positively influence others to do the same, so that through our collective efforts you continue to raise up strong Christian men and build up the body of Christ.
