To Be Eager To Be Me

Gracious Lord,
Comparison has been called the thief of joy – and with good reason! When I cannot avoid focusing on the status or gifts and abilities of others, and I end up feeling inferior, I lack appreciation and gratitude for my own lot in life. As a result, my ambition and drive dwindle, and I struggle to accomplish anything while falling into a funk. 

Instead of comparing myself to others, lead me to rejoice in the unique and varied ways you have made all people. Move me to celebrate the gifts and abilities of others and be thankful for them. Give me the ongoing desire to develop my own gifts, and to operate on the basis of my personal strengths, finding satisfaction and fulfillment in who you have made me to be. Keep me from holding back, and let me give myself fully to you and to others.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

For Those Who Serve on Sundays Unnoticed

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred. Many who serve on Sundays do so behind the scenes. Thank you for their willingness to give the gift of their time and talents in service to you and their congregations in various ways. Let them find a joyful reward in seeing how their service is a blessing to others. While they don’t serve for the recognition, prompt others to express their appreciation and to thank them regularly, so they feel valued. Use their service to build up others and to showcase the gospel as clearly and as beautifully as possible. Move them to always give their best, because you are worthy of nothing less.

To Live in the Joy and Peace of Freedom in Christ

Precious Redeemer,
You have set me free! Because my sins have been forgiven and I am yours, I am free from the guilt of all my own wrongdoings. I am free from the terror of your wrath or retribution. I am free from being helplessly enslaved by Satan and his hold over me. I am free from the fear of dying and death. I am free from the futility of endlessly pursuing my own perfection or any other impossible standard that I’ve established in my mind. I am free! Grant me, I pray, the daily joy of believing it and the peace of mind that accompanies a life lived in freedom. And, as I embrace this freedom that is mine in and through Jesus Christ alone, use that to propel my whole life as a constant expression of gratitude and thankfulness in every way.

For Those Struggling After Christmas

Joy of the World,
The day after Christmas can be a sad one for many. It can feel like it serves as the official mark of the holidays coming to a close. With Christmas in the rearview mirror, joy and anticipation quickly fade. No matter the cause, I pray for you to be with all who are down or struggling. The highs of the holidays can usher in difficult lows. Uplift those whose hearts are hurting or spirits are saddened. Turn their gloom to glee with good news and words of encouragement. Brighten their demeanor by fostering a grateful attitude in them, so they become aware of the many reasons they have to give thanks. Ultimately, whenever possible, I pray that you are not only enough for all people, struggling or not, but also that you become the source of their greatest joy.

Thank You for the Blessings of Hardship

Giving Father,
Thank you for allowing bad things to happen in my life. As much as I may pray for you to take them away or hedge me from them, you often turn them into a blessing that enriches me in some way or another. With this understanding, reshape my prayer life while I am in the thick of difficulty. Open my eyes to see the potential for good that you might bring out of any given challenge, and let that inform my prayers. Grow me through adversity and mature me through the refining fires of hardship. Always draw me closer to you when struggles arise, reinforcing my trust in you and firming up my faith in your promises. Thank you.

Thank You for Your Dedication to Our Salvation

Giving Father,
Thank you for all that you graciously provide for our lives, none of which is deserved or earned by our efforts. While this is true of all gifts we receive from your hand, the gift of salvation and the guarantee of eternal life that come with it are unrivaled. These exceptional gifts stand out all the more when we remember what we deserve and ought to expect as a result of our own rebellious hearts and sinful disobedience. But your grace is always greater than whatever our worst could ever be. Your determination and dedication to seek and save are relentless, and we are so very grateful for that. Let your desire to forgive and to save us always prompt our desire to thank and to praise you.

Thank You for Allowing Us to Give Thanks

Giving Father,
Thank you for creating us so uniquely that we are able to express thanks to you. While the biological diversity and sheer quantity of all of creation is already beyond our comprehension, mankind stands alone in the ways by which we’re able to give you thanks. For not only enabling us to give thanks, but also for the awareness of all of the reasons for which we can give it, thank you.

Moreover, when our hearts and lives are marked by gratitude, we also reap the benefits! Thankfulness contributes to so many different positive benefits for us, spiritually, emotionally, and even physically. So not only do we have the privilege of being able to thank you, but you also bless us when we do! The degree of your goodness and generosity is truly staggering, leaving us in awe and compelling us to thank you in every way possible with our whole lives. Thank you!

To Acknowledge Your Generosity (Part 4)

Generous Father,
Your lavish generosity generates my gratitude. When we are on the receiving end of so much goodness and grace, knowing both who you are and who we are, feelings of thankfulness swell up inside us. And that kind of gratitude isn’t content merely to be felt; it must be expressed. Let me seek to match your generous giving by expressing my gratitude generously.

One of the most challenging ways for us put that into practice is through our management of your financial gifts. Move me to grow in the grace of giving through my offerings, to be willing to treat others by covering the bill, and to be eager to give gifts of money to others as a show of appreciation and thanks. 

The giving of our time to others is another meaningful expression of gratitude. Free me from the mindset that the twenty-four hours of each day are mine to use as I selfishly determine, and instead help me see the giving of time as a thank you to others. Our culture is accustomed to everyone being so busy that we don’t have time for one another, so let me use time as a generous thank you to others to show them my appreciation – while doubling as an act of generous gratitude to you, too.

To Replace Unnecessary Concerns with Contentment

Loving Savior,
When you exhorted your disciples and followers not to set their hearts on earthly concerns like clothing and food, their worries at that time were of a different nature. Their concern was based on quantity – whether or not they would have enough of the basic needs of life. 

We, too, are concerned about things like clothing and food, but not for the same reasons. Very few of us have to worry about quantity – about having enough clothing or food. Instead, we focus on quality. We take for granted that we have enough and worry instead about having what is best or new or trendy. How easily we forget how blessed we are that we seldom have to worry about ever having enough! Nevertheless, when our hearts are attached to the stuff of this world, they will always find cause for concern or worry. Free me from that. Let me trust you to provide and bless me not with “more” or “newer,” but with contentment.

For Teacher Appreciation

Dear Lord,
Thank you for teachers. Thank you also for the extra opportunities during this Teacher Appreciation Week to let teachers know they are valued and that their hard work does not go unnoticed. They play a pivotal role in shaping how young people learn and think critically. They also face the challenges of teaching with limited resources, and make many sacrifices behind the scenes to educate their students.

When they have to deal with frustrating students or difficult home situations that creep into the classroom, provide them with the support and encouragement they need to address those issues. Fill them with the determination and resolve to push forward when dealing with discouragements. Grant them strong and reliable administrators who stand up for them and have their back. Create solid working relationships with colleagues and support staff. Bless them with opportunities to see their impact and influence making a difference in the lives of their students, both in the present and in the future. Bring them great fulfillment and joy in their work.
