For Whatever I Need to Better Help My Neighbor

Loving Lord,
You call on us so many times in Scripture to serve our neighbor in so many different ways, and the good news of the gospel works in us the desire to do just that. Since you promise to provide us with whatever we need to carry out what you direct us to do, I pray that you give me the understanding to determine the needs of others. Prompt me to ask thoughtful questions when needs arise and to listen carefully to responses. Increase my emotional intelligence and social awareness to be able to read between the lines when necessary. Connect me with a strong network of friends and acquaintances who have both the means and the desire to support those requiring help. Use me as a conduit of your compassion and care for others. 

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

For Believing Men Choosing to Be On Their Own

Faithful Father,
You call us to grow in grace. That growth cannot happen apart from your Word. While we have unlimited resources available to us to be in that Word on our own, you never intended for us only to be in your Word alone. You call us to gather with other believers and brothers in the faith. When men confess the Christian faith, but neglect meeting together with other Christians for worship, Bible study, or even fellowship, we are right to be concerned. Satan knows there is strength in numbers within the body of Christ, so he is much more likely to ambush and attack men who insist on going it alone.

Give me the godly courage to express my concern to them with the confidence that your design for growing together is more suitable than their insistence that they are just fine on their own. Move them to see the strength found in the support, encouragement, and accountability of community with brothers in Christ. Call them out of isolation and into the transformation that the Holy Spirit works as your Word pours into us and through us together, shaping us into the men of God we want to be and you call us to be.

To Be More Kingdom-Minded With My Possessions

Loving Savior,
You praised the shrewd manager who made the most of his situation and worked it to his own advantage. Your praise, though, is not intended to compel us to follow in his footsteps concerning his pursuit of personal gain. Rather, we can imitate his shrewdness in a spiritual sense as we consider how our station in life and the connections we have could be advantageous to the kingdom.

You place worldly resources all around us that can certainly be used in support of gospel ministry. Grant me greater awareness of my own personal connections and the resources at my disposal that can be utilized in kingdom-minded ways. Expand my view beyond the local ministry of my own congregation to also consider how I might be in a position to help facilitate the ministry of other congregations or organizations, on a larger scale or in different ways. Shift my perspective more and more to see all that you have entrusted to me as a means by which your gospel reach can be extended.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

To Support Kingdom Work with My Gifts

Gracious Gift-Giver,
All that we have is yours. All that you have entrusted to us is intended to be a blessing to us and/or to others. Help me see all the ways I can use all that I have for good in this world and for your kingdom. When my hands and heart are inclined to clutch on to my belongings as if they’re mine, let your grace loosen my grip. Guard my heart from greed by filling it with a spirit of generosity. Move me to eagerly help and support others when I have the means to do so. Lead me to regularly reflect on the offerings I give back to you, and open my eyes to see how I can facilitate and support the work of your kingdom. Grant me the joy of seeing how generous giving can enrich and extend your kingdom, and use the gifts of your people to seek out the lost and serve the found.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

To Support Women and the Use of Their Gifts

Loving Lord,
While many in the world have a tragically twisted view of your perfectly established genders, you have created men and women with unique and complimentary gifts. Your design was for male and female to work together in perfect harmony, faithfully carrying out their respective roles. To that end, I ask you to help me be more aware of the many gifted women all around me, and to seek to utilize their gifts in every way possible. Lead me to look out for them, support them, and encourage them. Keep me from treating women with anything less than the full respect and honor they deserve. Use me to speak up for them and defend them when other men won’t. Let their gifts be a tremendous blessing in the work of your church, too, as they are raised up and equipped to serve you and the body of Christ.

To Care for My Parents

Perfect Father,
While I may not live under their roof anymore, the Fourth Commandment still applies, so I want to honor my parents. While no parents are perfect, mine helped shape me into who I am today, so good, bad, or otherwise, I am thankful for them. I can always do a better job of communicating with them. Help me prioritize them so they never feel that I am too busy for them or don’t have any time for them.

Give patience and perseverance to all taking on the responsibility of caregivers for their parents in any capacity. Let their help and support be a blessing and not a burden for them. Lead them to view their responsibilities to their parents as a joyful opportunity to thank them for the years of love and support they provided throughout childhood up to the present day. Let my gratitude for my parents be expressed to them in such ways that they know how loved and appreciated they are.

To Befriend Others

Friend of Sinners,
Friendship is exactly what many need. While it is true that we always have a friend in you, you have also created us with a need to connect with other human beings. I am grateful for all the friendships you have blessed me with in my life, but I am also aware that there are many who are not able even to name a close friend. Help me keep my eyes opened for such individuals, and where possible, help me befriend them. Let me be ears to listen to them and allow me opportunities to show love and concern, so that in seeing my care for them, they may also come to know and appreciate how much greater your care for them is, and to know that they always have a friend in you.

To Check In With Others

Lord God,
As guys, we tend to prioritize problem-solving and getting things done. When others share with us the challenges going on in their lives, we focus on fixing things and making them right. This can be a great blessing to others when they come to us looking for that kind of help.

What isn’t always natural for us is to think about others, take the initiative, and check in with them to see how they’re doing. We tend to keep to ourselves and give our attention to projects more than people. It isn’t that we don’t care about others; it just doesn’t occur to us to touch base with them regularly. 

Help me to be more mindful of that. I know there are people you’ve placed in my life who are going through new or challenging seasons in their own lives. Prompt me to call or text them more frequently, not necessarily to see what might need fixing, but simply to let them know they are cared for and supported. Regular check-ins like this can help combat the isolation and loneliness that others may be experiencing. And, the benefits go both ways, as you often use others to bless us unexpectedly through these meaningful interactions, too.

To Support Ministry Partners

Dear Lord,
Thank you for providing so many laborers in your vineyard. As gifted leaders, strong lay workers, and   pastors and teachers work faithfully together, you watch over your flock and bear much fruit. Bless the spiritual care they provide to your people and to each other. Use them to defend against the devil’s attacks and to equip your people to do the same for their families and for themselves. 

Give me an awareness to know when your workers are struggling, so that I may help them shoulder whatever burdens they are bearing. I want to provide them with support in ways that refresh them and make their work a joy. Make me an encourager to them in ways that they feel valued and appreciated. Help me always to speak well of them and to defend them from unkind words and gossip. Use me to build them up so that they effectively continue to build up your church.
