To Reply to Others With Gentleness

Gentle Savior,
Help me remain in control of how I respond to others. Just because our society has normalized rage-filled responses any time a person is set off doesn’t mean you permit it. Instead, let our responses be filled with gentleness and self-control. Forgive us for knowingly and intentionally allowing ourselves to be drawn into divisive dialogues that will feed our sinful desire to quarrel and fight. Guard our hearts from such temptations and grant us wisdom to avoid the allure of arguing. If my conversations are always to be seasoned with salt, dear Lord, give me the discipline to be slow to respond. Doing so will not only allow me time to carefully choose the words I use, but also to consider how my response could be taken by others. Finally, give me the discernment to know when it’s wise to avoid providing a response that I may regret, and the humility to realize that my opinion is not so valuable that I need to express it about everything going on around me.

To Curb My Impatience

Patient Lord,
While technology and other “instant-everything” realities of our world today play a role in my impatience, I acknowledge and confess that it also stems from my own selfish view that my time is more valuable than everyone else’s. When someone else is late for an appointment, I’m the victim. When the light doesn’t turn green fast enough, or the driver ahead of me can’t see it while glued to his phone, I’m the one who is inconvenienced. Of course, when the tables are turned, and I’m the one responsible for the same things, contributing to someone else’s impatience, I always have a legitimate defense for my own tardiness. Lead me to be more thoughtful and respectful of other people’s time and schedule, and relieve me of my own impatience. Keep me from trying to cram too much into each day so that I get irritated when my timing is thrown off. Help me improve in embracing the wait times as added opportunities for prayer and reflection on your promises.

For Greater Patience This Year

Patient Lord,
As I continue to settle into this new year, I ask you to grant me a greater measure of patience. In this fast-paced world that views having to wait for anything for any amount of time as if it were some horrific tragedy, help me get better at simply slowing down. I don’t need everything right away. I don’t need immediate results. I don’t have to respond ASAP 24/7. Let me be OK with uncomfortable silences. Show me the wisdom of thoughtfully thinking through things rather than providing a hasty answer or solution. Increase my patience, especially with others I know who enjoy testing it. Finally, equip me with this Fruit of the Spirit to patiently wait on your promises, confident that as I do, I am waiting while covered in your grace.
