To Bless the Celebration of the Reformation

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred. Worship in many Lutheran churches this morning is special because of the celebration of the Reformation. Thank you, Lord, for how you guided the efforts of so many through the Reformation to restore the good news of the gospel to its rightful place of prominence within the Church. For those who were willing to make such sacrifices for the sake of the gospel, we thank you. For restoring the clear truth that our salvation is by grace, through faith, and not by good works, we thank you. Through the Reformation you allow us to see how serious you are about your promise that your Word will endure forever. Keep our generation steadfast in standing on Scripture, and let it always be central to our worship and life.  

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

To Heal and Restore Broken Families

Restoring Father,
Sadly, families are not immune to the collateral damage of existing in a fallen, sinful world. I pray for your help and restoration in healing families broken by sin. Where the sin of adultery has ripped husband and wife apart, grant repentance and reconciliation to repair the marriage bond. When abuse of any kind has left family members or children devastated, intervene and bring it to an end. In those cases, also bring about justice for the one responsible and provide any necessary therapy to those harmed by it. Let those families crushed by traumatic death or injury receive counseling and support to help them process and navigate their grieving or loss. No matter what struggle or hardship any family may face, see to it that your grace is always apparent to provide healing and hope.

For the Courage to Seek Reconciliation (Part 2)

Spirit of Peace,
Regardless of the reason, whenever there is an issue between another believer and me, I pray that you provide me with courage to seek reconciliation. When my words or actions have been the cause for concern, and someone else desires to speak with me about it, let me be willing to, whether I feel it is necessary or not. In those situations, I may either be blind to the damage I may have done, or be unaware of how my behavior affected another person. Or, I could be aware, but feel justified on my end and stubbornly try avoid the other person. This is not loving to them, and will only cause more hurt. Make me always willing to listen, quick to accept responsibility, and eager to apologize, whether it is for my own sake or for the sake of the other person. Whenever this process happens, usher in your peace, and heal any hurts or hangups with your gift of reconciliation.

For the Courage to Seek Reconciliation (Part 1)

Spirit of Peace,
Regardless of the reason, whenever there is an issue between another believer and me, I pray that you provide me with courage to seek reconciliation. When I perceive another person’s words or actions to be the cause of discord, guard me from gossip, so that I don’t make things worse by fueling the discord even more. Instead, as soon as possible, enable me to address my concern with the individual with humble confidence. Let me be firm, but gentle, never seeking to get even or repay for some wrong, but to seek healing and restoration. When repentance is called for, let it be received well and allow it to bring about the confession and absolution that is necessary. Whenever this process happens, usher in your peace, and heal any hurts or hangups with your gift of reconciliation.
