For the President

Sovereign Lord,
Surround the President of the United States with guidance, wisdom, and maturity through councils, committees, and confidants who genuinely have the best interests of the American people at heart. Grant him the humility to seek and accept direction from others and the confidence to make difficult decisions for the greater good. Move him to lead with integrity and honesty, not seeking to shift blame when wrong, but being quick to take responsibility for poor judgment or mistakes. Help him to learn from his errors so that he is always growing and developing his leadership skills. Bestow on him the ability to demonstrate a gentle and compassionate spirit when necessary, and the willingness to be firm whenever appropriate. Lead him to prioritize prudence over popularity and to exercise discernment to avoid division whenever possible. When the gravity of his responsibilities weighs on him, or his heart is troubled, give him peace of mind. You alone, Lord, know what is in his heart, and you alone can change and transform his heart to suit your perfect purposes. Do so as you see fit, to bless both his leadership and those he leads.

For Those Who Are Dating

Loving Lord,
Guide and direct men who are dating in hopes of establishing a relationship that they pray may eventually result in marriage. Lead them to marvel at how remarkably wonderful women are and to appreciate our unique differences. Compel them to always treat women with respect, looking out for their best interests while protecting and serving them, however necessary. Guard their hearts and keep them from allowing themselves to succumb to lust and any sexual temptation, so that they honor both women and their own bodies. Grant them joy and fulfillment in the pursuit of learning more about the interests, goals, and dreams of those they’re dating. Favor them with a shared love for you and the blessings of growing in their faith. Help them see the ways that dating provides them with the opportunity to display Christ-like, sacrificial love, and equip them to show it.

For Families with Little Ones in Worship

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred. But worship is a unique challenge for parents with little children. Thank you for the Christian parents who prioritize bringing their little ones to worship. Some mornings, before they even pull into the church parking lot, they have already experienced a day’s worth of stressful wear and tear. Provide them with the strength and determination to follow through with worship, and through it, rejuvenate their spirits. Fill the members of their church families with compassion to know when to lend a helping hand to frazzled moms and dazed dads. Direct congregations to consider how they might become more family-friendly. Give parents the discernment and discipline to raise their children to view worship with reverence and respect. Through these formative years in church, lay a solid foundation in children that paves the way for a lifetime of faithful worship attendance, so their hearts remain saturated by the gospel.

Thank You for Government

Giving Father,
Thank you for the blessings we enjoy through our government. While we will never be short on matters to complain about when it comes to government (both because of shortcomings on their end and because of our propensity for grumbling and complaining), we too often take for granted the positives you work in our lives through those you have placed in positions of governmental authority. Thank you for using our government to maintain structure and order, allowing citizens to reliably depend on so many different services and operations as they conduct their day-to-day lives. Guard those who govern from being driven by personal ambitions and self-serving agendas. Grant them wisdom in decision making, patience in dealing with difficult people, and a genuine desire to accomplish what is noble and right for the people they govern. Make their work a joy for them and a blessing for those they serve. Thank you.

To Honor God and the Government with Our Taxes

Mighty God,
No matter which category we fall under, proactive or procrastinator, today marks the same deadline for everyone in the U.S. to file their taxes. We have a responsibility as citizens to honor and respect the government, and one of the ways we carry that out is by giving to Caesar what is Caesar’s, as Jesus instructed his disciples to do. Paying taxes is also an act of worship, as we serve you by dutifully fulfilling our obligations to the government you have placed over us to bless us.

Keep us from being deliberately shady or deceitful on the one hand, or careless and thoughtless on the other when working through our taxes, and keep our hearts in the right place. Grant patience to tax preparers dealing with last-minute stresses. Bless those collecting, managing, and directing the spending of our taxes with wisdom and prudence to serve our country well. Guard our government against corruption and abuse, and put in place reliable and trustworthy leaders to oversee the whole process. If there are improvements that can be made anywhere, allow those changes to take place and benefit many.

To Speak Respectfully

Loving Savior,
How I speak to and about others matters. When I speak negatively about someone to others, I am influencing their opinions about that person’s reputation. While there may be a time and a place for this when safety concerns or dangerous risks may potentially be associated with someone, more often than not, that isn’t the case. I am either speaking carelessly or thoughtlessly without any regard for the impact my words have on someone else’s reputation. Or, I am deliberately disparaging others with malicious intent. Forgive me, for I know that if the tables were turned and I discovered others speaking similarly about me, I would not stand for it. Don’t, therefore, allow me to be involved in any way with such talk of others.

Instead, lead me to speak respectfully of others, even when I disagree with them. Let my words be positive and encouraging, always seeking to build up the reputation of others or come to their defense. The world’s words aim to tear down and divide. May my words instead heal, restore, and unify whenever and wherever possible. May my words be worthy of your name that I bear and may they always honor you.

To Honor and Respect Women

Wonderful Creator,
In your wisdom you created men and women, uniquely designed not only physically, but in how we think and feel as well. Thank you for the joy of discovering and delighting in those differences! 

While we have different roles that compliment each other beautifully, our fallen world too easily views those differences in terms of inferiority and superiority. I confess that I am guilty falling into this trap, too. Forgive me and bless me with the sacrificial, servant heart of Jesus, so that I look to women and to serve them, rather than to be served by them. Let my attitude toward women be filled with respect and admiration for all they do. Lead me to honor them with my words and actions. Use me to protect and care for them whenever possible. Help me always to hold them in high regard.
