For Healthy Sex Lives in Marriage

Gracious Savior,
In our sex-crazed society, we have disregarded and despised your design for sex, and we have suffered tremendously because of it. This treasured gift is spoiled when shared between anyone other than a husband and wife, and that widespread abuse has also negatively influenced physical intimacy in otherwise healthy Christian marriages. Sex depicted in movies and media paints an unrealistic picture of expectations and consequences for sex as God intended it. Moreover, too many Christian marriages are sex-starved for sinful reasons. Bring your healing and hope to marriages that have been damaged greatly by pornography or adultery. When drive and desire for sex are mismatched between spouses, let healthy communication be regularly present, and let it be guided by a god-pleasing view of sex where selfless service overshadows selfish insistence. Let your gift of sex be the amazing blessing you intend it to be between faithful, committed, sacrificial spouses.

For Honesty in Marriage

Gracious Savior,
Let honesty be a staple in Christian marriages. When a husband and wife are honest with each other, it leads them to be real and open with each other, and communication thrives as a result. Guard their minds and hearts from gradually slipping into white lies and half-truths with each other. These can be doubly devastating because one spouse is still being lied to and the other is lying to him or herself about the damage that is actually being done. Protect marriage partners from the temptation to exploit the familiarity they have with each other by getting comfortable with masking dishonesty. When not honest with each other, compel them to confess it, and let the good news of your gracious forgiveness rebuild honesty and trust in their relationship.

For Spouses to Grow as Companions

Loving Savior,
The blessing of companionship in marriage can be lost or forgotten when couples let busyness deceive them into believing they don’t have time for each other. The truth is, we are only as busy as we allow ourselves to be. When spouses take on more responsibilities and routinely say yes to requests, they don’t always stop to realize that in doing so, they are essentially saying no to each other. Help married couples take time to pause and discuss together what they are willing to add into their lives, so they consider what they are also giving up. Instill in them a determination to guard their time together fiercely, recognizing that companionship and closeness require both quantity and quality time with each other. Through these efforts, deepen their connection, strengthen their bond of unity, and increase their desire for each other.

To Bless Parent/Teacher Relationships

God of Wisdom,
As students make their way back into classrooms, see that they grow this school year in wisdom and in spirit. To help facilitate their growth, please foster a healthy relationship between parents and teachers. When they are on the same page and enjoy healthy communication, students benefit greatly. Give parents the humility to accept responsibility when their children have contributed to creating undesirable learning environments or classroom settings, and make them willing to work with teachers to address any concerns or behavior. Give teachers patience, understanding, and the humility to recognize that certain situations in homes can sometimes adversely affect a student’s ability to engage or participate in learning. Provide ample support for teachers and faculty, and let parents feel heard and listened to in a way that builds trust between them. Remind parents that teachers are trained professionals who are qualified to instruct their children, and give them confidence in their ability to do so.

For Spouses to Pray With and for Each Other

Dear Savior,
You command us to pray, invite us to pray, and promise to bless us as we pray. If these truths all apply to us individually, then surely any marriage will be enriched when spouses enjoy healthy prayer lives. Move husbands and wives to pray with and to pray for each other. Lead them to be open, genuine, and vulnerable with each other, fostering a close connection that allows them to build a powerful prayer life together. Build them up in their faith so that prayer becomes as natural as breathing. Through a healthy prayer life, deepen spouses’ spiritual intimacy with you and with each other, and use their prayers as a dynamic force for good in your church and in their communities.

For Spouses to Speak Well of Each Other

Lord Jesus,
Lead husbands and wives to speak well not only to each other, but also about each other. When wives are together with other wives or husbands with other husbands, conversations can at times turn into gripe sessions about spouses, highlighting their negatives and piling on disrespectfully. Rather than celebrating respective spouses, expressions of disappointment and discontentment are shared. Whether intentions are light-hearted or more serious in nature, these kinds of complaint sessions cause damage to the marriages involved, while also dishonoring marriage in general. Help marriage partners not only to guard their tongues in such situations, but also to seize these opportunities to praise their spouses, to speak well of them, and to highlight their growth and progress. Rather than tearing down the fabric of marriage, let positive and productive conversations about spouses be more prominent, elevating marriage to the high and holy calling you have made it to be.
