For the Translation of Your Word

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred. When we worship, we do so gathered around your Word. We are so accustomed to hearing your Word regularly that we take for granted that we are able to hear and understand it in our own language. Thank you for those who have dedicated themselves to faithfully transmitting and translating your Word. Because of their efforts, your Word has been able to permeate every element of our worship, including confessions and creeds, preaching and prayers, and all sorts of psalms and songs. Let your Word continue to spread until every ear hears it in its own native language, so that the whole world is able to rejoice with others as believers gather together in worship.

For Confidence to Teach Others

Perfect Teacher,
There is no salvation apart from hearing of you, knowing what you have done, and believing it. So, since no one can be saved without learning, it follows that no one can be saved without teaching. We may not always feel confident in our ability to teach others when it comes to your Word, but since disciples are always learning and growing, we are by default filled with what we need to teach others. The teaching we do will not likely take place in a classroom, but in day-to-day living and through one-on-one relationships. You do not require experts to teach others, just believers putting their faith into practice through a willingness to disciple others. Make me one of them.

To Appreciate Adversity

Mighty God,
We don’t pray for hardship or struggle for ourselves or others, yet through them, you discipline us and teach us perseverance. Since these blessings would be rare to come by apart from adversity, thank you for allowing difficulties to come into our lives. Use them to build us up into what you need us to be. Make us resilient and ready for future challenges. Lead us to lean on you and into you for determination and direction.  Stretch our gratitude to more deeply appreciate the degree of suffering you obediently endured in our place.  Change our mindset about struggles into one that welcomes them as learning experiences that pull us in closer to you.

For the Pursuit of Knowledge

All-Knowing God,
There is so much to learn about the world and everything in it. You give us curious minds and a desire to know more. Nevertheless, since so much information can so easily be secured through technology in an instant, and with so little effort, the joy and eagerness to pursue knowledge is threatened. Even thinking itself can be carried out on our behalf by smart technology. Guard us from mental laziness. Make our minds sharp and enable us to think critically on our own. Do not allow our own sloth to seek shortcuts over opportunities to grow and learn. Keep us enthusiastic about the goal of learning just for the sake of gaining knowledge and understanding. Lead us to be quick to acknowledge and thank you for our growth, and bless our efforts so that we glorify you in the process.

For Those Graduating

God of Wisdom,
Bless the many graduates who are closing out another chapter of their education. Whether they are entering high school, college, pursuing additional degrees, or joining the workforce, may their last level of learning serve them well in the next phase of life. Thank you for the dedication and hard work they put into their studies. Thank you for all of the wise and patient professors, teachers, counselors, and parents who poured into them. Thank you for what you have in store for them in the future. As this stage of their learning gives way to the next, ensure that they never graduate from learning and growing in faith, the most important education there is.

To Prioritize Growing in My Faith

Holy Spirit,
Prompt me to prioritize my spiritual growth. As with any growth or learning, spiritual growth doesn’t happen accidentally or unintentionally. If I don’t plan for time to read, study, and apply your Word, it’s rather foolish of me to assume I will grow in my faith. Guide me in sorting out my schedule so that I eliminate distractions and hindrances, including anything that may be harmless but not productive. Help me set up boundaries to protect my intentions to deepen my faith. Fill me with the necessary self-discipline to move forward in setting up and establishing these paths for pursuing your righteousness.

To Love and Listen to Your Teaching

Patient Teacher,
While the Bible doesn’t reveal with certainty the details of your day on this day, Wednesday of Holy Week, we do know that yesterday, on Tuesday of Holy Week, you enlightened and taught others. When challenged by religious leaders, you seized the opportunity to correct and instruct. When you used parables to teach, you both convicted those who rejected you and comforted those who follow you in faith. 

Like Mary, busy Martha’s sister, lead me to spend more time at your feet, listening to your instruction and guidance in your Word. So often I allow myself to be too busy to learn from you and be blessed by your words. But your Word is life! Not only does the instruction from your Word provide the direction and wisdom I need for this life, but it also feeds my faith for eternal life. May a steady diet of law and gospel continue to sustain and sanctify me daily as you teach me through your Word.
