To Look After Pastors

Good Shepherd,
Thank you for the work you do to shepherd your sheep through pastors. Keep them well fed spiritually, so that they are always faithful to your Word and dedicated to the ministry. At the same time, let us remember that since they, too, are sinners in need of a Savior, their own lives will not be without struggles. Some may be self-inflicted, while others may be the direct result of Satan’s malicious efforts. He seeks to do great damage to your church by maligning ministry, and he knows that targeting pastors is highly effective. Therefore, lead pastors to be transparent about their burdens, to lean on fellow believers for strength and support, and to do battle against their own vices through confession and absolution. Do not leave pastors isolated in ministry and do not allow them to establish the habit of forsaking regular gatherings with other pastors. Let us be vigilant in keeping our eyes open for warning signs that could indicate the need for help, and let us be deliberate about praying for our pastors. In all of this, guard, protect, and bless pastors so that they can serve you and your people well.

For Husbands to Lead Like Jesus in Marriage

Lord Jesus,
You call husbands to lead their wives and family. As they do, let their leadership reflect your loving, sacrificial, servant leadership. Protect their hearts from the temptation to use the authority you give them to suit their own selfish plans or pursuits. Rebuke and correct those husbands who abuse their role and responsibilities, and turn their focus toward meeting the needs of their wives and families. Fill them with a submissive spirit to follow you obediently, and the courage to lead their family spiritually, so that above all else, they bring their family closer to you in faith.

To Bless Congregational Leaders

Almighty Lord,
In your grace, you not only provide congregations with pastors to shepherd your sheep, but also faithful congregational leaders to direct and carry out ministry. Since the vast majority of congregations rely on volunteer members to serve in various capacities rather than paid staff, these gifts to your church are willingly giving their time and talents as sacrificial offerings. Make their work a joy, surround them with support and prayers on their behalf, and let their acts of service inspire others to use their gifts in service to you, too. Bless the relationship leaders have with their pastors and teachers, so they are eager to help and build one another up. Grant them the joy of having a front row seat in seeing firsthand the fruit you bear through their work together with the gospel. Provide for all of your churches in need of leaders, and continue to raise up faithful, dedicated, gospel-fueled believers to lead for generations to come.

For Guys to Find Community

Lord God,
Connecting with other guys doesn’t always come very naturally for men. Many struggle when they live isolated lives and have very limited interaction with other guys. When that is the case, not only do we often limit our potential, but we also leave ourselves susceptible to making poor choices that lead to questionable or regrettable behavior. Of course, keeping the wrong company can also bring about the same damaging effects. Therefore, please provide positive opportunities and experiences for guys to find community with like-minded, godly, spiritually mature men. Lead them to want to be led and to have the courage to lead others, and through that leadership, heighten the level of respect shared among brothers. When those relationships exist, rich blessings will follow as men encourage, admonish, challenge, and support each other in powerful ways. Through all of this, raise up more men to bring greater glory to you through their righteous living.

For Fathers to Be a Reflection of Their Father

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred. To belong to you and to call you Father is a joy and privilege unrivaled by any other, and to be in your presence for worship each week highlights that reality even more. Moreover, as you draw us closer to you through your Word, you also equip fathers to be passionate about carrying out their vital role in the home. Raise up spiritually dedicated fathers who are devoted to passing on their greatest treasure – Jesus – to their children. Nurture this devotion in them by first maturing their own faith and deepening their desire to know you more and more. Then, enable them to be your reflection as they father their children.

Give them gentleness and patience, while remaining evangelically firm in their discipline. Make fathers willing and eager to forgive, without being permissive or tolerant of sin. Let children see what strong spiritual leadership looks like in their fathers, not only so they grow up appreciating and respecting those in authority, but also – and of far greater importance – so that they grow up enthralled by you and the pursuit of your faithfulness and righteousness. Enrich fathers with every spiritual blessing they need to find purpose and great satisfaction in fulfilling this high and holy calling well.

For Strong Followers

Humble Savior,
I know the importance of praying for leaders, but I often overlook the blessing of solid, strong followers. Thank you for those who have the humility to follow others in leadership. Use them to uplift and uphold leaders through their encouragement and validation. Give followers the ability to ask good questions of their leaders that challenge them without being abrasive or disrespectful. Make them willing to carry out the necessary work as directed by those in charge, even when that work is difficult or unpleasant. Prompt them to pray for their leaders, speak kindly of them and to them, and in every possible way, show their love and support so that the labor of leaders is a joy and delight.

For All Those Serving in Your Church

Lord of the Church,
We are grateful for every soul who serves in the church. Thank you for the thorough theological and ministerial training our called workers have received. Let their leadership gifts serve to guide congregational ministry while also equipping others to lead. Thank you for dedicated lay leaders who willingly use their gifts and give of their time in ministry, offering up a pleasing sacrifice to you through their ministry. Thank you for those in the church who voluntarily tend to the daily needs of their congregations, honoring and glorifying you with their talents and abilities and serving their brothers and sisters in Christ. Bless called workers, lay leaders, and all willing volunteers with a harmonious spirit and the guidance of your Spirit to empower their congregations to faithfully sow the seed of your Word. Grant them joy and satisfaction in their work, and fulfill them with the privilege of giving themselves fully to you in their service. Strengthen our congregations and the whole body of Christ as each part eagerly excels at its work.

To Lovingly Serve, Uphold, and Respect Women

Selfless Savior,
You charge us with the responsibility of sacrificially serving others, including women. In the process, we are to honor them and treat them with respect. Too often, though, we treat them as inferior, diminish them, and make punchlines of them. And, as if such actions weren’t shameful enough, we also objectify them and behave as if their only reason for existence is to serve and satisfy us. When we mistreat or abuse women, or fail to speak up in their defense against those who do, we sin by taking advantage of them and abdicating our responsibility toward them.

Have mercy on us and forgive us for having such cold, calloused hearts! Wash and cleanse us, and transform our attitudes. Direct our hearts to desire the safekeeping and protection of women, and to support and celebrate them in their roles. Prompt our prayers on their behalf, and raise us up as godly men to lead them spiritually and to always look out for their well-being.

To Pray Properly for Our Government

Dear Father,
You call on believers not only to honor and respect their government leaders, but also to pray for them. If only we knew how often you allow our prayers to shape and influence government practices and policies, surely we would offer up our petitions with much greater frequency! When we bring our prayers, let them be driven by the unique needs of elected officials in their respective roles, as well as the needs of the citizens of our country. And, although your kingdom comes through the gospel and not through those carrying political power, we nevertheless pray for leaders to fulfill their obligations in a way that doesn’t hinder the work of your kingdom and your church. While party affiliations, platforms, and policies will understandably come into consideration in our prayers, do not allow them to taint our prayers by letting bitterness, resentment, or animosity toward individuals flow from our hearts. Through our prayers, bless all those who serve in our government as you see fit.

To Lead Others Spiritually

Faithful Father,
You have made us your disciples by your grace, through your Word. Discipleship includes continuing to personally grow in that grace through your Word. And, as men, our discipleship also includes leading our wives and families in their growth, too. I have so much room to grow! Guide and direct me first and foremost to grow in my own personal faith, so that as I do, I am better equipped to lead others. Since discipling includes discipline, grant me the motivation and discipline to prioritize my spiritual leadership. Dispel my fears with faith, and fill me with the Spirit’s zeal and confidence to embrace my call to lead. Where I see my own shortcomings, help me see your strength. Where I see my inadequacy, help me see your infallibility. Build others up through me so that we all may boast more in you.
