To Guard Against False Teaching

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred. As believers all over the world gather on this day to hear your Word proclaimed, protect their ears from false teaching. Keep those preaching faithful to the promises they made to speak the truth as your representatives. Keep their preaching pure, free from the seeds of lies and deception sown by the evil one, whether blatant or subtle. Equip leaders and elders in your churches to distinguish between truth and error, so that they may correct or rebuke heresy, and raise up mature Christian members to share in that responsibility. Guard those preaching from the temptation of proclaiming what itching ears want to hear. Guide them in rightly handling the application of law and gospel. Through such faithful preaching sanctify your church and keep her in the one true faith.

To Be Vigilant against False Teaching

Holy Spirit,
We are to watch out for those who cause divisions and who put obstacles in our way that are contrary to the Bible. You caution us to be on guard against the yeast of false teaching and to avoid those who proclaim what itching ears want to hear. We know that any deviation from the truth comes not from you, but from the evil one, so compel us to take all of these warnings seriously.

Since all believers share in the responsibility of guarding against false teaching and heresy, I need to be alert and aware. My first line of defense is to know your Word well, to read and study it, to meditate on it, and to take it to heart. The more familiar I am with your Word, the better equipped I am to identify whatever strays from it. Give me the wisdom to discern what is right and true when reading Christian content and listening to praise & worship music. There are those who call themselves spiritual leaders and teachers all over the internet, many of whom are not faithful to Scripture. Keep me watchful in determining what I allow my ears to hear and my heart to absorb. Out of love for you, love for your Word, love for the souls of others, and love for my own soul, keep me vigilant against false teaching.
