To Protect Those Surrounded by War

God, our Shield and Strength,
Watch over civilians all over the world who live in or near areas of conflict and war. Keep them safe from collateral damage, protecting them from the damaging effects of weapons and war. Even as enemies are at war with each other, make fighters and those in command aware of possible unintended casualties, and guide them to avoid making decisions that put innocent people at risk. Grant wisdom to civilians, and keep them diligent and alert so they do not put themselves or others in danger. Compel government leaders to seek resolution with urgency and haste, limiting injury and loss of life as much as possible. And, since you have declared that wars and rumors of wars will continue until you return, I ask you to use them for a good purpose: lead people to long for and find peace here, and help them find it in you for eternity, too.

To Defend and Protect Others

Strong Father,
You created and called us to come to the defense of others – to protect those in danger and intervene on behalf of those who are victims of wrongdoing. When we stand idly by and do nothing, or pass off the responsibility to someone else, others are hurt and harmed because of our passivity. Forgive us for our indifference and our failure to lean into the responsibilities that are ours to carry out. Spur on mature and godly men to lead by example for the next generation. Raise up young men to disconnect from distractions and actively engage in the world around them. Fill men everywhere with faith and fortitude to look out for others. Make them vigilant and willing to do whatever is in their power when the safety and security of others calls for it.

For Those Battling Hidden Struggles

Compassionate Christ,
Today I pray for those who are suffering silently. On the outside, it may appear as if all is well and life is good. But inside, unbeknownst to others, they are suffering and struggling mightily, possibly even contemplating suicide. I plead for you to intervene in any way necessary to guard and protect them from any immediate threat of harm. Prompt them to pause, reflect, and discover solutions that offer hope. Or, open a window that allows another individual to truly see them, pick up on their hurt, and engage with them in meaningful conversation. Let that dialogue reveal a promising path forward. Be present with them in their isolation and loneliness, and roll back the darkness to reveal your wonderful life-giving light.

To Put an End to Abuse

Caring Father,
No matter the nature of the relationship – parent/child, boyfriend/girlfriend, husband/wife, or any other – I pray for those in any relationship where abuse exists. Whether that abuse is expressed physically, emotionally, or in any other sense, it has no place in any relationship. A close relationship is meant to be a source of safety and security, and when anyone takes advantage of the trust that is given to facilitate abuse, the results are devastating.  Defend and protect any victims from serious harm or injury. Give them the courage to speak up for themselves and seek help as soon as possible. Open the eyes of friends or family members nearby to be able to identify any signs of abuse, and give them the courage to intervene. 

Be also with the abuser in any way that puts a stop to the abuse and gets them the help that is needed to address its root cause. Work the fear and trepidation of the law into the hearts of any responsible for abuse, ultimately leading them to contrition and remorse for their actions. Then, grant forgiveness to those who are guilty, and the ability to forgive to those who are victims. Put an end to abuse everywhere, and through the power of your gospel work reconciliation and restoration in those relationships damaged by abuse.
