To Watch Over Our Young People

Good Shepherd,
Stay close to the sheep of your flock who are young. Daily they face many dangers and distractions. Some are physical and emotional, like threats of violence and bullying at school. They face academic and athletic pressure that weighs heavily on them. Other threats are spiritual, including struggles with sin, doubts about you or your Word, or negative peer pressure to hide or diminish their faith. Social media, foul language in music, and shows that celebrate sin shape and influence their minds and thinking in ways they don’t yet understand. Protect them, Lord. Guard and keep them. Lead their parents and other caring Christian adults to be vigilant in watching out for them and steering them in the right direction. Feed their faith so that they may flourish and never forsake you.

For Those You’ve Used to Help Me

Caring Father,
It’s so easy for us to forget or overlook the ways you have used others throughout our lives to help us along the way. No one gets to where they are in life without the aid and assistance of others. You provide others to be there to help us learn and show us how to do certain things. You give others listening ears to walk us through problems. Some have been instrumental in connecting us with other people who have been a blessing to us. Many have prayed for us more than we’ll ever know. Thank you for placing considerate and helpful individuals in my life to guide and support me in such meaningful ways. You have used them to lead me to experience how much you truly care about me.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

For Those Wrestling With a Difficult Decision

Lord God,
Help those who have been wrestling with a difficult decision. There is much wisdom in taking the time to thoroughly think through possibilities and seek the counsel of others. Use your Word to guide them with your insights and perfect promises. Compel them to ask thoughtful questions regarding their decision, and grant them clarity as they pursue the answers. Finally, when they have arrived at the time when the decision is required of them, bless them with peace of mind and confidence in their decision. Let their confidence rest less in the certainty that they made the right decision, and more in the certainty that you are surely able to bring good out of whatever they decide, just as you promise to do for your people.

To Correct with Your Word

Lord God,
When you call us to proclaim your Word, it is primarily so that others may hear the good news of the gospel, since there is no other way mankind can know what you have done to save him. But your Word doesn’t only provide the gospel; it also offers correction. Help us remember to use it for that purpose and give us the confidence to do so. Guard us from both the extreme of Pharisaical piety that is too eager to correct others, and also from a timidity that avoids it altogether. Since sanctification is your work, and your work is carried out through your Word, lead us to rely on it and on you to direct us along paths of righteousness. We cannot know the right way unless we know your way, and we have no desire or ability to walk in your steps unless you work in us that desire and ability. Lead others to accept correction with humble hearts, and us to offer it with humble hearts as well.

For Those Facing Heavy Decisions

Spirit of Comfort,
Be present for those who find themselves in situations where they need to make hard, heavy decisions. When choices will significantly impact families, finances, and futures, do not let those decisions be rash or hasty. When circumstances require a decision to be made urgently or in a very short timeframe, grant those decision-makers an extra measure of your Spirit, and surround them with wisdom and counsel. When gut-wrenching end-of-life decisions need to be made, let the confidence of the Resurrection and eternal life wash over and calm troubled, anxious hearts. Move believers in the body of Christ to offer the comfort of their presence for those facing emotionally draining decisions, so that they don’t have to make those decisions alone.

For Those Who Care for Christ’s People

Lord of the Church,
Thank you for those who shepherd your people and provide spiritual care for the sheep of your flock. Bless their work as they carry out the great responsibility of guiding and nurturing the faith and lives of the body of Christ. Keep them faithful to your Word and grant them the discernment to correctly apply law and gospel. Refresh them in soul, spirit, and body when they feel the burden of their calling. Reward their work with joy in seeing the fruit of their labor as your Holy Spirit strengthens faith and equips believers for works of service. Continue to train and provide future workers for this important work, so that your grace flows in abundance from one generation to the next until your glorious return.

To Guide Me in Self-Discipline

Sanctifying Spirit,
Along with power and love, you equip us with a spirit of self-discipline (2 Timothy 1:7). Apart from you we only know darkness and are enslaved by sinful and rebellious attitudes. Without your enlightenment, the evil one deceives us, hiding our lack of discipline behind a false freedom that convinces us we’re in control and in charge of our lives.

But, when your grace opens our eyes to see the truth, we see how blind we truly were. Only by faith do we welcome and embrace a spirit of self-discipline. We desire to turn away from temptation and go to war against wickedness. We are eager to rebuke unrighteousness in our own lives and shield ourselves from Satan. Intensify the spirit of self-discipline within us so that we are determined to establish sound spiritual boundaries in our lives to help guard and protect ourselves. Guide us to pursue what is good and pure and noble in your sight, so that we magnify you with our whole lives.
