For First Responders

Protective Father,
Through first responders, you protect property, provide care, and save lives in accidents and emergencies. Thank you for providing trained professionals in many fields who are willing and able to arrive first on the scene of what is often chaos or disaster. Transport them safely whenever they are rushing to a scene, and protect them from danger or injury once they arrive. Give them clarity as they assess the scene and triage the injured. Keep them alert and aware. Grant them discerning and decisive minds and skilled hands. Enable reliable communication between first responders and those following up. Bless them for their selfless service, and bless the lives of many others through them.

For Self-Control and Maturity

Loving Lord,
When children act up, we understand that they are still learning appropriate behavior and speech in certain situations. That’s why when adults act up, we call it childish. As we grow up, we expect grown-ups to act less like children and more like adults. That line, though, is rather blurry in our world today, Lord, and yes, oftentimes even in me. Therefore, I ask you to increase my self-control. Give me not only the awareness of when I need to filter my speech or simply keep my mouth shut, but also the ability to do it. Help me know how to conduct myself in social settings, and grant me the ability to carry out that behavior. Fill me also with self-control over my thoughts and actions when I am by myself. Curb impulses to overeat or indulge excessively, or to gorge myself on entertainment – certainly regarding what is inappropriate or sinful, but even with what is not. Equip me with both the awareness to avoid being lured into temptation, and the self-control to choose paths of righteousness in those moments instead. In all of this, move me to live not just more and more like a grown-up, but more and more as a mature believer.

For Awareness and Avoidance of Sin

Mighty Lord,
Awaken me to the lethal threat of sin in my life. Whether my attitude toward my sin becomes too casual or too calloused, either is a very spiritually dangerous place to be. When I allow that perception of my sin to prevail, I have become blind to the damaging and potentially damning nature of sin. While sin may at first pretend to permit me to be master while it plays the role of servant, it is never content to remain in that role. Rather, it intends to usurp the role of master in my life. Whenever any sin seeks to latch on in my life, or in weakness I beckon it, send your Spirit to snap me out of my spiritual lethargy and rouse me to vigilance, so that I watch and pray instead. Since you have already defeated the evil one and freed me from the chains of sin’s slavery, in your mercy prompt me to flee those chains any time I catch sight of them again.

For Students Traveling Back to School

Loving Lord,
As students make their way back to school over the next several weeks, we pray for their safety. Send your guardian angels to protect them from harm. Let their vehicles be reliable and free them from concerns about car trouble. Keep drivers alert and focused. Allow for smooth and on-time flight departures and arrivals. Direct their luggage to arrive at its correct destination with them. Grant them favorable weather. Provide any necessary assistance along the way through helpful people you place in their path. Watch over them, and remind nervous parents that no one loves their child(red) more than you do.

To Watch Over Our Young People

Good Shepherd,
Stay close to the sheep of your flock who are young. Daily they face many dangers and distractions. Some are physical and emotional, like threats of violence and bullying at school. They face academic and athletic pressure that weighs heavily on them. Other threats are spiritual, including struggles with sin, doubts about you or your Word, or negative peer pressure to hide or diminish their faith. Social media, foul language in music, and shows that celebrate sin shape and influence their minds and thinking in ways they don’t yet understand. Protect them, Lord. Guard and keep them. Lead their parents and other caring Christian adults to be vigilant in watching out for them and steering them in the right direction. Feed their faith so that they may flourish and never forsake you.

To Be Proactive Against Temptation

Protective Father,
I am no stranger to temptation. I know how weak and susceptible I am when Satan is knocking at the door. When those moments arrive, it so often feels like it’s already too late and my self-control and determination to stand firm collapse and crumble. Since I know this about myself, give me the wisdom to get ahead of temptation instead of allowing it to grow and intensify. Keep my eyes from wandering. Strengthen me to redirect any impure or unholy thoughts and take them captive to righteousness. Do not permit me to be deceived into thinking I can put myself into known dangerous situations that will test my sanctification. I am so grateful for your promise to provide a way out whenever I am tempted, but I also ask you to give me the spiritual maturity and discipline to avoid putting myself into situations that require a way out in the first place.

To Protect Those Surrounded by War

God, our Shield and Strength,
Watch over civilians all over the world who live in or near areas of conflict and war. Keep them safe from collateral damage, protecting them from the damaging effects of weapons and war. Even as enemies are at war with each other, make fighters and those in command aware of possible unintended casualties, and guide them to avoid making decisions that put innocent people at risk. Grant wisdom to civilians, and keep them diligent and alert so they do not put themselves or others in danger. Compel government leaders to seek resolution with urgency and haste, limiting injury and loss of life as much as possible. And, since you have declared that wars and rumors of wars will continue until you return, I ask you to use them for a good purpose: lead people to long for and find peace here, and help them find it in you for eternity, too.

For Our Nation’s Independence

God of Freedom,
Today we celebrate the freedoms our nation has had since being established 250 years ago. Since you alone determine the duration of nations and the rise and fall of civilizations, we thank you for establishing and sustaining the United States of America for two and a half centuries. Over that time, you have guided and directed the course of our history to result in tremendous blessings not only for our nation, but worldwide. The freedoms we enjoy are absolute treasures, and we plead for your intervention whenever those are threatened. Yet like all other nations, we are not without our faults, so we daily need your patient forgiveness and rich mercy. Heal division within our nation and unite us with like-minded goals in pursuit of the greatest good for all people. Protect us from all who seek to destroy or undermine our blessed country in any way, whether those enemies are internal or external. Let your church also thrive at this time, taking advantage of the freedoms we are permitted to sow the seed of the gospel. Through that gospel, bring many more to faith, while also creating responsible, respectful, honorable, obedient, and loving citizens who will continue to uphold and defend this great nation.

For Your Blessing on July 4th Travel and Celebration

Dear Lord,
Many in our country will be traveling today and begin celebrating the 250th Anniversary of our nation’s independence. Direct your watchful angels to guard and protect all those traveling near and far, guiding them to safe arrivals. Grant your favor on all who have planned and are hosting gatherings and events, allowing everything to go as smoothly as possible. Prepare paramedics and first responders to also be ready for when things do not go according to plan. See that festivities are carried out and conducted responsibly, so that people do not put themselves or others in danger. Prohibit irresponsible or excessive partying that dishonors you or reflects poorly on our nation. Instead, bless the celebrations this weekend with joy, laughter, and a deeper awe and appreciation of the profound privilege of being a citizen of the United States of America.

To Defend and Protect Others

Strong Father,
You created and called us to come to the defense of others – to protect those in danger and intervene on behalf of those who are victims of wrongdoing. When we stand idly by and do nothing, or pass off the responsibility to someone else, others are hurt and harmed because of our passivity. Forgive us for our indifference and our failure to lean into the responsibilities that are ours to carry out. Spur on mature and godly men to lead by example for the next generation. Raise up young men to disconnect from distractions and actively engage in the world around them. Fill men everywhere with faith and fortitude to look out for others. Make them vigilant and willing to do whatever is in their power when the safety and security of others calls for it.
