For a Healthy Relationship with Our Possessions

Giving Father,
You gift us with so much and entrust all of it to our care. In reality, all that we have is yours. Nevertheless, our selfish sinful flesh naturally latches onto possessions and material things as if they belonged to us. When we become attached to things as if we own them, we become possessive and protective of them. It feeds into our greed and robs us of the joy of generosity. Forgive us for our attachment to things instead of our attachment to you, the Giver of those things. Let us give as freely as we receive, so that our relationship with our belongings remains healthy and whole, and our devotion to you is not divided. 

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

For Generosity

Giving Father,
All that we have is from your hand, and what you provide, you provide abundantly. We can easily overlook or forget about your generosity, not because it isn’t evident, but because we are too accustomed to focusing on what we don’t have. Redirect not only our eyes, but our hearts, too, to see how you excel at giving good gifts. Then, as we see how lavishly you provide, replace our greed with gratitude and prompt us to give as you do – freely, eagerly, and generously. You provide us with so much, not solely for our personal joy and benefit, but so that your goodness can flow through us to others. While no example of generosity will ever surpass the gift of your Son, the most precious gift ever to be received, make us imitators of your generosity so that we benefit not only from receiving gifts, but also in giving them.

For the Wonder of Our Created World

Mighty God,
You have provided us with so much variety and splendor in creation that leaves us standing breathlessly in awe before you. When we consider how ordinary and bland our world could have been, but then observe the wonder all around us, how can our reaction be anything other than to praise and glorify you? Forests are littered with unique plants and trees to sustain the diverse range of animals living there, while providing us with meandering paths that invite us into peaceful escapes. The grandeur of towering mountain ranges reflects your might and magnitude, while the simple flat plains capture the vast expanse of relatively untouched landscapes. The oceans hide countless worlds and species still to be discovered, while the skies and space beyond them tease us to explore and question so much that is still unknown about our universe. Thank you, God, for the beauty of creation and for our ability to appreciate it and marvel at you because of it. May we always steward it well as a reflection of our gratitude and praise.

For Those Getting Married This Summer

Lord of Love,
I ask you to bless the weddings scheduled over the course of the summer months. Let your hand guide the plans that are still in motion, so that everything goes as smoothly as possible for so many on their special day. Yet, even when there are hiccups or disappointments, equip the bride and groom with the resiliency to manage them, since they will inevitably encounter similar discouragements together in their marriage as well. Fill husband and wife with so much mutual joy and elation over each other that any slip-ups are easily overshadowed and forgotten. Cause their hearts to swell with gratitude as they experience your goodness. See that the message in the ceremony highlights the necessity and blessing of growing a marriage around you, centering it on your perfect obedience for them and building it on the foundation of the cross and empty tomb. Let such marriages be conduits of your love, overflowing with boundless grace and unlimited forgiveness, so that they beautifully mirror your loving, sacrificial devotion to your Church.

For Being Able to Feel and Express Gratitude

Gracious God,
Thank you for the ability and awareness both to feel grateful and to express gratitude. While all of creation is spectacularly wonderful in so many unique ways, there is nothing that begins to compare to the crown of your creation, mankind. We alone have the capacity to become profoundly touched by acts of generosity that leave us overflowing with thankfulness. And, not only are we able to show our thanks to others for their thoughtfulness, but we can ultimately always direct our prayers of thanksgiving to you for your overwhelming goodness. Many who are without you in this world speak of gratitude and being thankful, but they miss out on the fulfilling ability to direct those feelings toward you, the true God and Giver of all good things. Thank you for your unwavering providence and for the uplifting joy and privilege of being able to give our thanks to you.

To Only Use Your Name in a Worthy Manner

Beautiful Savior,
Yours is the only name by which anyone is saved. Therefore, help me use it properly. Since salvation comes through you, let me make your name known to all, but… not as just another curse word. Not merely as an exclamation. Not as a thoughtless validation that I am telling the truth. Rather, let me set aside your name properly, to praise you, to pray to, and to give thanks. Let my mouth make your name synonymous with forgiveness and grace. Let others associate your name with what is good and right through my use of it. Let your name be known as the way, the truth, and the life, so that in you, others may find what I have, and what the world can’t ever offer: the joy, peace, and security of eternal life.

To Appreciate That God Answers Prayer

Dedicated Father,
You always hear the prayers of your people. You are never too busy, too preoccupied, or too unconcerned to bend your ear to our requests. But you do more than just listen; you answer our prayers, and you do so with a response that best meets our needs. How spoiled we are! Yes, even when your final decision appears to be at odds with our desired outcome, we can accept it with the full confidence that your way is always the better way. Thank you for faithfully hearing our prayers and for addressing them perfectly, which is the only way you know how. Widen our eyes of faith to see the full picture when viewing your answers to our prayers, so that we might see how you weave them in to suit the needs of others, serving them in the best way possible. Guard us from selfish tunnel vision, so that we realize how often our own prayers also affect others, and grant us grateful hearts that regularly take advantage of this powerful privilege of prayer.

For the Generosity of Others

Generous Lord,
Thank you for the generosity others have shown me over the course of my life. You have often used their kindness and care to provide for my daily bread. Additionally, generous gifts from others have allowed me to enjoy experiences I would not otherwise have been able to enjoy. Let gratitude to you and to the giver always be my first response when I am on the receiving end of generosity, and guard my heart from expecting it or feeling as if I’m somehow entitled to it. It is one thing for others to acknowledge that you’ve blessed them with an abundance; it is another for them to be generous with it. May your generosity and the generosity of others work in me a generous heart, too.

For Contentment

Loving Father,
Fill me with contentment today. Let it be based on an awareness of my identity – that I am doubly yours! Not only did you lovingly and wonderfully bring me into existence to be yours with this gift of life, but you also paid the ultimate price to secure me back from Satan. I am yours twice over! Since I belong to you, every grand and gracious promise in your Word is mine, too. You will never leave me or neglect me. You will provide everything I will ever need. You will bring triumph out of any trouble. You will make right all wrongs against me in your own way and time. You will never lose patience with me. You will always love me. What else could I need when I have everything in you? Let my heart sing today with the beautiful harmony of gratitude and contentment.

To Be Eager To Be Me

Gracious Lord,
Comparison has been called the thief of joy – and with good reason! When I cannot avoid focusing on the status or gifts and abilities of others, and I end up feeling inferior, I lack appreciation and gratitude for my own lot in life. As a result, my ambition and drive dwindle, and I struggle to accomplish anything while falling into a funk. 

Instead of comparing myself to others, lead me to rejoice in the unique and varied ways you have made all people. Move me to celebrate the gifts and abilities of others and be thankful for them. Give me the ongoing desire to develop my own gifts, and to operate on the basis of my personal strengths, finding satisfaction and fulfillment in who you have made me to be. Keep me from holding back, and let me give myself fully to you and to others.
