To Appreciate Your Blessings in Moderation

Caring Father,
You have blessed us with so many good things, and for that we will always be grateful. Nevertheless, because our sinful nature is so susceptible to developing unhealthy connections with your blessings, we need your help. Lead me, Lord, to strive for moderation in all things. I can enjoy good food without gorging. I can limit myself to watching one episode at a time. A single new clothing item can bring joy without purchasing a whole new wardrobe. I can do without buying the unnecessary extra thing just to get free shipping. Grant me a content heart and the self-discipline to admire without having to acquire. Make excess the exception and satisfy me with what is sufficient. Help me honor you with a life of moderation.

For Those Faithfully Serving Behind the Scenes

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred. Thank you for those quietly serving behind the scenes. Thank you for the toilet that works because of the retired plumber who came in during the week and used his gifts to fix it. Thank you for those who attentively care for the property and landscaping so that our open door is not an eyesore on Sunday morning. Thank you for those willing to get their hands dirty for the sake of a clean and tidy sanctuary that sets the tone for worship. Thank you for those serving in a hot kitchen to bake the refreshments enjoyed by many. You provide your people with gifts to humbly serve behind the scenes, not for praise or recognition, but with faithful, gratitude-filled hearts, eagerly making the most of these opportunities to love you and us. Thank you for them.

For Gratitude and Contentment

Giving God,
Every day we are enticed to purchase and consume. No matter how much we accumulate, there is always more. Spending has never been as easy or convenient as it is in our present age, and it is normalized by everyone all around us. Help me go against the grain, Lord, by filling me with a spirit of contentment. Let me find joy in admiring the world’s wares and the belongings of others without feeling the need to personally possess them. Renew my appreciation for all that is already mine, and allow me to find satisfaction in putting it to good use and in taking care of it. Counter my consumer spirit with a genuine desire to value people and experiences over shopping and spending. Grant me a glad and grateful heart, resulting in thankfulness for all that I have, rather than resentment by focusing on what I lack. After all, I have you; therefore, I have all that I truly need.

For Being Able to Feel and Express Gratitude

Gracious God,
Thank you for the ability and awareness both to feel grateful and to express gratitude. While all of creation is spectacularly wonderful in so many unique ways, there is nothing that begins to compare to the crown of your creation, mankind. We alone have the capacity to become profoundly touched by acts of generosity that leave us overflowing with thankfulness. And, not only are we able to show our thanks to others for their thoughtfulness, but we can ultimately always direct our prayers of thanksgiving to you for your overwhelming goodness. Many who are without you in this world speak of gratitude and being thankful, but they miss out on the fulfilling ability to direct those feelings toward you, the true God and Giver of all good things. Thank you for your unwavering providence and for the uplifting joy and privilege of being able to give our thanks to you.

To Appreciate That God Answers Prayer

Dedicated Father,
You always hear the prayers of your people. You are never too busy, too preoccupied, or too unconcerned to bend your ear to our requests. But you do more than just listen; you answer our prayers, and you do so with a response that best meets our needs. How spoiled we are! Yes, even when your final decision appears to be at odds with our desired outcome, we can accept it with the full confidence that your way is always the better way. Thank you for faithfully hearing our prayers and for addressing them perfectly, which is the only way you know how. Widen our eyes of faith to see the full picture when viewing your answers to our prayers, so that we might see how you weave them in to suit the needs of others, serving them in the best way possible. Guard us from selfish tunnel vision, so that we realize how often our own prayers also affect others, and grant us grateful hearts that regularly take advantage of this powerful privilege of prayer.

For the Generosity of Others

Generous Lord,
Thank you for the generosity others have shown me over the course of my life. You have often used their kindness and care to provide for my daily bread. Additionally, generous gifts from others have allowed me to enjoy experiences I would not otherwise have been able to enjoy. Let gratitude to you and to the giver always be my first response when I am on the receiving end of generosity, and guard my heart from expecting it or feeling as if I’m somehow entitled to it. It is one thing for others to acknowledge that you’ve blessed them with an abundance; it is another for them to be generous with it. May your generosity and the generosity of others work in me a generous heart, too.

For Contentment

Loving Father,
Fill me with contentment today. Let it be based on an awareness of my identity – that I am doubly yours! Not only did you lovingly and wonderfully bring me into existence to be yours with this gift of life, but you also paid the ultimate price to secure me back from Satan. I am yours twice over! Since I belong to you, every grand and gracious promise in your Word is mine, too. You will never leave me or neglect me. You will provide everything I will ever need. You will bring triumph out of any trouble. You will make right all wrongs against me in your own way and time. You will never lose patience with me. You will always love me. What else could I need when I have everything in you? Let my heart sing today with the beautiful harmony of gratitude and contentment.

For This Year’s Blessings

Lord God,
As the year winds down to a close, I look back and thank you for the blessings you’ve granted me throughout the year. I am grateful for the joyful experiences you’ve allowed me to have and for the ways you used challenges and hardships to shape and grow me. You kept your promise to provide for my physical and spiritual needs, and guarded and protected me in countless ways – some of which I am aware, while others I am not. Thank you for never leaving me, for always holding out hope, and for surrounding me with so many people who have made a positive difference in my life. I pray that you have also used me to be that for others. Lead me to set aside time in the remaining days of this year to be mindful of how good you’ve been to me this year.

For Those Struggling After Christmas

Joy of the World,
The day after Christmas can be a sad one for many. It can feel like it serves as the official mark of the holidays coming to a close. With Christmas in the rearview mirror, joy and anticipation quickly fade. No matter the cause, I pray for you to be with all who are down or struggling. The highs of the holidays can usher in difficult lows. Uplift those whose hearts are hurting or spirits are saddened. Turn their gloom to glee with good news and words of encouragement. Brighten their demeanor by fostering a grateful attitude in them, so they become aware of the many reasons they have to give thanks. Ultimately, whenever possible, I pray that you are not only enough for all people, struggling or not, but also that you become the source of their greatest joy.

Thank You for the Blessings of Hardship

Giving Father,
Thank you for allowing bad things to happen in my life. As much as I may pray for you to take them away or hedge me from them, you often turn them into a blessing that enriches me in some way or another. With this understanding, reshape my prayer life while I am in the thick of difficulty. Open my eyes to see the potential for good that you might bring out of any given challenge, and let that inform my prayers. Grow me through adversity and mature me through the refining fires of hardship. Always draw me closer to you when struggles arise, reinforcing my trust in you and firming up my faith in your promises. Thank you.
