For Patience, Prudence, and Prayers Regarding Politics

Loving Lord,
As political campaigns start to ramp up, attacks start flying, and opponents start slinging slander, help me keep a level head. Even though our politicians and voters are all flawed and imperfect, we are nonetheless tremendously blessed to have a government that is guided by our Constitution, and to have so many who are willing to serve in government positions. Protect them from sinister influences and evil agendas that have the potential to hurt, harm, or put anyone at risk. Guard us from being swept up in our culture’s tendency to elevate politics to a religious level. Prompt us instead to pray continually for those serving in office and those considering it. Let our words about politics and politicians be seasoned with salt, and may they be as positive, uplifting, and encouraging as possible at all times.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

To Avoid Political Idolatry

Almighty God,
While not without its faults, we are blessed in so many ways to have the government and political system that we do, based on such an impressively written document as the Constitution. However, as our society has gradually set you aside, someone or something else inevitably fills the vacuum to be idolized and worshiped. For many in our nation, that void has been filled by politics. Citizens on both sides of the political aisle deify their own party and demonize the other. One side is savior, the other is satan. One side is the cause of all the problems, the other has all the solutions. Guard us as Christians from idolizing politics, elevating it to a position of prominence that only you deserve. Guide us to avoid extremist views and hold a balanced perspective. Help us to truly appreciate the government you’ve given us, without ever forgetting that it’s you who has given it to us. Let us honor, respect, and obey those to whom you’ve given the authority to govern, but let our hearts and our worship be always and only directed to you.

To Pray Properly for Our Government

Dear Father,
You call on believers not only to honor and respect their government leaders, but also to pray for them. If only we knew how often you allow our prayers to shape and influence government practices and policies, surely we would offer up our petitions with much greater frequency! When we bring our prayers, let them be driven by the unique needs of elected officials in their respective roles, as well as the needs of the citizens of our country. And, although your kingdom comes through the gospel and not through those carrying political power, we nevertheless pray for leaders to fulfill their obligations in a way that doesn’t hinder the work of your kingdom and your church. While party affiliations, platforms, and policies will understandably come into consideration in our prayers, do not allow them to taint our prayers by letting bitterness, resentment, or animosity toward individuals flow from our hearts. Through our prayers, bless all those who serve in our government as you see fit.

Thank You for Government

Giving Father,
Thank you for the blessings we enjoy through our government. While we will never be short on matters to complain about when it comes to government (both because of shortcomings on their end and because of our propensity for grumbling and complaining), we too often take for granted the positives you work in our lives through those you have placed in positions of governmental authority. Thank you for using our government to maintain structure and order, allowing citizens to reliably depend on so many different services and operations as they conduct their day-to-day lives. Guard those who govern from being driven by personal ambitions and self-serving agendas. Grant them wisdom in decision making, patience in dealing with difficult people, and a genuine desire to accomplish what is noble and right for the people they govern. Make their work a joy for them and a blessing for those they serve. Thank you.

For Good Governments

Heavenly Ruler,
You established governments to lead and rule and to be a blessing to the nations and people under them. Through them you intend to establish peace and order that contribute to the well-being of their citizens. Because their decisions and actions affect so many, surround those in government with the wisdom and counsel of many advisors. Grant humility to those in positions of authority. Lead them to be willing to listen to those around them and to weigh all the pertinent considerations when establishing policies and laws. Protect their hearts and minds from ungodly and corrupt influences, and let your Spirit guide them in any and every way possible.

Reward good and commendable governments with supportive citizens who honor and respect their leaders. In this way, let them be a blessing to each other for the greater good. Curb crime, disobedience, and disorder everywhere, allowing governments to give the bulk of their attention to how best to serve. When tensions rise between governments, provide peacemakers on all sides who are committed to avoiding any hostilities or military conflicts. Let them be encouraged to go to great lengths to establish and maintain peace, so that during such times, your Church might diligently carry out her work of seeing the gospel spread rapidly to the ends of the earth.

To Honor God and the Government with Our Taxes

Mighty God,
No matter which category we fall under, proactive or procrastinator, today marks the same deadline for everyone in the U.S. to file their taxes. We have a responsibility as citizens to honor and respect the government, and one of the ways we carry that out is by giving to Caesar what is Caesar’s, as Jesus instructed his disciples to do. Paying taxes is also an act of worship, as we serve you by dutifully fulfilling our obligations to the government you have placed over us to bless us.

Keep us from being deliberately shady or deceitful on the one hand, or careless and thoughtless on the other when working through our taxes, and keep our hearts in the right place. Grant patience to tax preparers dealing with last-minute stresses. Bless those collecting, managing, and directing the spending of our taxes with wisdom and prudence to serve our country well. Guard our government against corruption and abuse, and put in place reliable and trustworthy leaders to oversee the whole process. If there are improvements that can be made anywhere, allow those changes to take place and benefit many.

For Believers to Help Heal Our Nation

Dear Lord,
As our nation adjusts to a new administration governing our country, there is a great deal of both hurt and happiness at the same time. Send an extra measure of your Spirit into the hearts of believers to powerfully equip us to be peacemakers. Help Christians to look beyond party affiliation and see neighbors to love and care for, regardless of how they cast their vote.  Forgive believers when we are judgmental, brash, or abrasive with others regarding their political stance. Give us instead a gentle and patient spirit.

Let us take the lead in helping heal in every way possible. Grant us sensitivity and understanding regarding the views of others, and accept any differences with civility. Let us pray for all politicians and government officials across the board, so that they can be unified in their goal of seeking what is best for our country. Bless us with a genuine desire to seek not our own self-interests, but the interests of the greater good. As we let our light shine by loving our neighbors, let it attract many souls to you and the light of your salvation, thereby unifying us in the best way possible – as loved and forgiven saints.

For Those in Authority

Almighty God,
You reign supreme and oversee all things. You alone give all power and authority to those who govern and rule. Where such a responsibility and privilege is abused or neglected in our broken world, that isn’t a reflection of your holy desire to provide blessings through those in positions of authority. Forgive corrupt leaders and politicians for failing to serve as a conduit through which you intend to provide and protect citizens of their respective countries.

In your mercy, provide them with opportunities to right any wrongs and to learn from their mistakes and failures so that they might serve well. Supply leaders with sound support and sage advice from others, and grant them the humility to listen and to put wise counsel into practice. Give them discernment in identifying the needs of the people they serve, and the determination to meet those needs to the best of their ability. Finally, lead me to regularly keep my own local and national leaders in my prayers.

For Those Governing

Loving Lord,
You encourage us to pray for our leaders of church and state, so I ask you to guide and direct all those holding offices of high trust at ever level in our government. Thank you for their hard labor and for their desire to represent constituents and citizens well. Guard them from being influenced by outside agendas and any corruption. Help them remain steadfast in their moral standards and conduct their responsibilities ethically. Surround them with wise counsel that seeks to serve the best interests of as many people as possible. Bless their dedicated work and watch and keep their families while they carry it out. Use them to govern our country in a way that prioritizes providing the necessary care for and discipline of our own citizens, and after that to offer any prudent help and aid to other nations as possible.

For those Serving in our Government

Mighty Lord,
Grant wisdom to all who serve in all areas of our government. As they conduct their daily business, surround them with an abundance of wise counsel. In striving to carry out the will of those they represent, they are often tasked with the challenge of satisfying those who hold opposing wishes. Where compromise is possible and prudent, lead them to seek it. Guard them from personal agendas or outside interests which seek to influence their decision making. Help them to manage their time well, being protective of their marriage and family needs. Protect their reputations from slander, gossip, and mudslinging, and keep them from being responsible for it. Bless them in their faithful service, and make them a blessing to those they represent.
