To Defend and Protect Others

Strong Father,
You created and called us to come to the defense of others – to protect those in danger and intervene on behalf of those who are victims of wrongdoing. When we stand idly by and do nothing, or pass off the responsibility to someone else, others are hurt and harmed because of our passivity. Forgive us for our indifference and our failure to lean into the responsibilities that are ours to carry out. Spur on mature and godly men to lead by example for the next generation. Raise up young men to disconnect from distractions and actively engage in the world around them. Fill men everywhere with faith and fortitude to look out for others. Make them vigilant and willing to do whatever is in their power when the safety and security of others calls for it.

For the Courage to Correct When Necessary

Spirit of Truth,
Give me the courage to speak up to brothers in the faith who need to be called out or rebuked for one reason or another. Whether they are stuck in sin, settling for worldly satisfactions, or lacking the desire or discipline to pursue you more deeply and faithfully, make me bold to speak up. When I am ready to say something, ensure that my heart and my attitude are grounded in pure motives and a longing for what is best for my brother(s). Break down any barriers that would hinder others from listening to correction, and use these challenging situations to foster healthy spiritual growth all around. And, when others have the courage to correct or admonish me when I need it, quiet my own stubborn spirit so that I receive it properly and take it to heart. Cause me to be grateful that you have placed godly, mature Christian men in my life who care enough to correct me.

To Lovingly Serve, Uphold, and Respect Women

Selfless Savior,
You charge us with the responsibility of sacrificially serving others, including women. In the process, we are to honor them and treat them with respect. Too often, though, we treat them as inferior, diminish them, and make punchlines of them. And, as if such actions weren’t shameful enough, we also objectify them and behave as if their only reason for existence is to serve and satisfy us. When we mistreat or abuse women, or fail to speak up in their defense against those who do, we sin by taking advantage of them and abdicating our responsibility toward them.

Have mercy on us and forgive us for having such cold, calloused hearts! Wash and cleanse us, and transform our attitudes. Direct our hearts to desire the safekeeping and protection of women, and to support and celebrate them in their roles. Prompt our prayers on their behalf, and raise us up as godly men to lead them spiritually and to always look out for their well-being.

To Provide Father Figures for Those Without Fathers

Father God,
There are so many young men being raised without the strong presence of a loving, firm father. Many dads have checked out, either through busyness or selfishness, essentially abdicating their responsibility to father their children. In other cases, dad isn’t even in the picture, leaving mom to single-handedly carry out his responsibility in raising his child(ren). Lead godly men to be aware of such situations and, with the parent or guardian’s blessing, give these Christ-like men the courage to help take young men under their wing to guide and encourage them as a father-figure would. Use them to provide examples of biblical manhood, displaying humble confidence and spiritual strength, while also showing sacrificial service and loving care to others. Model for them strong marriages and family blessings, so they are inspired to aspire to follow these godly examples.

For the Influence of God-Fearing Men on Younger Generations

Lord God,
Our society is seeing a real need for mentorship for young men. They need strong male role models who provide an alternative to counter the narrative of toxic masculinity. Raise up solid mentors who welcome the opportunity to positively influence the younger generation. Make them first men of THE Word, and second, men of their word. Let them model godliness in every area of life, leading with humility, integrity, drive, self-discipline, compassion, and grace. Direct young men to see these examples in other men and seek to emulate them. Move godly women to praise and celebrate these relationships whenever they are evident, realizing that the influence of God-fearing men on young males will bear desirable fruit in families, relationships, and society in general.

To Raise up Men to Lead

Lord God,
Raise up believing men everywhere to take seriously your charge to be spiritual leaders. Some are lukewarm, lazy or apathetic. Others are insecure, lack confidence, or don’t know the first step. Still others are too comfortable passing off their God-given responsibility to their wives and other women. Work repentance and renewal in the hearts of Christian men everywhere and empower them with your Holy Spirit. 

Eliminate their indifference. Replace their timidity with trust. Guide them with your Word. Place other spiritually mature men in their lives to model and mentor what godly leadership looks like when men step into the roles you created them to fill. Let their impact be felt in marriages, families, congregations, and even whole communities as you stir up in them a spiritual fervor to hold high the banner of your gospel. Bless them and produce abundant fruit through their efforts in tending to your kingdom.

To Live Godly and Holy Lives

Holy Spirit,
Thank you for interceding on our behalf when we offer up our prayers. And thank you for equipping us as we grow in faith to carry out that for which we pray. With that in mind, guide me as I seek to live in godliness and holiness. Begin by increasing in me the desire to strive for your high standards of Christian living. While protecting me from a self-righteous spirit, instill in me a genuine desire to stand out from the rest of the world by my living. Not only does that honor you, but it also serves to reflect you to others. Keep me from succumbing to any shame or ridicule from others as I look to live for you more and more. Instead, let my example of godly and holy living lead others to aspire to live more honorably as well.  

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

For the Trust to Lead Confidently

Mighty God,
The Bible shows us multiple pictures of men who lacked confidence when you called them to lead. They carry insecurities, self-doubt, and point to their personal flaws as evidence that they are unqualified. They often asked for signs or miracles from you to reassure them and boost their confidence.

I can relate. I often feel inadequate and unqualified to carry out the tasks to which you have called me. It’s difficult enough just to lead myself. Where a wife and family come into the picture, it’s natural to feel ill-equipped to lead them spiritually, too. Nor do I always feel like I am the right guy to serve in my church. 

Just as you reassured reluctant men of God in the Bible, so also reassure me. Lead me to direct my focus on you rather than in the mirror. Show me how to trust in your promises rather than my own lack of potential. Help me place my confidence in you rather than self. Make me bold, give me a spirit of certainty, grant me your power to faithfully follow anywhere you lead me, and the determination to serve you and others steadfastly.

To Mature in My Faith

Dedicated Savior,
Your grace is not just what brought me to faith, but also what keeps me in the faith and grows my faith. But I so easily take it all for granted. I let other preoccupations become priorities. I get busy doing things that seem urgent and important right now, but have no bearing on my spiritual health or my eternity. 

In your gracious forgiveness, both wash me and work in me to desire more of the things you desire for me. If I am to be a godly man of faith, direct me to your Word so that through it, you can create in me a hunger for spiritual growth that seeks to be satisfied by time spent with you. Let your Word dwell in me richly each day, develop a disciplined prayer life in me, and deepen my drive to engage with and commit to my church family and community. Make these requests a reality, so that through them you may grow me into the mature man of God you created me to be.

For the Blessing of Good Leadership

Lord and Leader of my life,
I thank you for the leaders you have placed in my life. Through their wisdom, experience, and guidance, you have provided me with direction and positive influence so often. I pray for those who haven’t or don’t currently have the blessing of strong role models and leaders to follow and imitate. Give them discernment so that they are able to learn even from poor leaders how not to conduct themselves, but also insert into their lives those kinds of leaders that have the ability to leave a significant impact on them in the right ways.

Good leadership is itself a great blessing, but godly leadership carries far more weight. I cannot thank you enough for the spiritual leaders, filled with your Spirit, who have pointed me again and again to your Word, your cross, and your tomb. No blessing compares to these gifts, and I am grateful for the sacrifices other leaders have made to keep me focused on them.

Bless my leadership as well. Through your Spirit, first help me lead myself along your paths, so that you might equip me with the spiritual tools to also lead others well. Give me the confidence to lead others, starting in my own home, leading my spouse and children, or equipping me to do so down the road should you bless me with them. If leadership is influencing others, help me to embrace the positive influence I can have on everyone around me all the time, and give me the courage to step into those roles boldly with your Spirit.
