To Live with Integrity

Dear Jesus,
Help me to be the same person behind closed doors that others see in public. Lead me to live with integrity, seeking to think and behave when I am on my own in the same way I think and behave at all other times. Guide my keyboard comments and responses to be no different from what I would comfortably communicate face-to-face. Keep me from saying one thing in the presence of others and doing another when they aren’t around to see it. Guard my lips and tongue to glorify you not just when others are around to hear, but even when I am by myself. You see me at all times, so let me honor you in every way at all times. 

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

To Guard Me From Hypocrisy

Loving Savior,
When it comes to hypocrites, or false believers, you didn’t mince words when warning them of condemnation while here on earth. And rightly so! Not only were they outside of the kingdom of God, but they also threatened others by potentially leading them astray and outside of your kingdom as well. 

Although we are not hypocrites in the strict biblical sense of being false believers, we do find ourselves acting hypocritically. We know your Word and will well enough, and do not hesitate to point out to others when they fail to live by it, but we ourselves can’t keep from breaking it. Lead us always to repentance when we are aware of this (and even when we’re not!), and guide us to grasp the importance of striving to match our words and our actions so that our hypocrisy would never turn others away from you. Rather than displaying a pharisaical hypocrisy, let your grace always abound and be evident both in me and through me.

For a Heart Filled with Genuine, Joyful Thanks

Giving God,
I could never keep a record of the countless blessings – physical and spiritual – that you have generously heaped on me over the course of my life, but I can thank you for them. So thank you, for giving me so much more than I deserve or could ever have hoped for. Even as I thank you, though, I realize how inadequate my own gratitude is, and how often it lacks a joyful heart behind it. Therefore, thank you for viewing even my insufficient gratitude as an acceptable expression of thanks, by virtue of my faith, which is itself your gift to me – yet another reminder of how wonderfully blessed I am! As I wake up each morning, lead me to greet the day with gratitude – real, genuine, joyful gratitude – so that I become even more mindful of your abundant blessings over the course of each and every day. Thank you!

To Own Up Entirely to My Wrongs

Patient Father,
When I wrong others, sometimes I fail to take full ownership of my words and actions. When I deflect or diminish my behavior, I am not only downplaying my own role, but also diminishing the damage sin causes. Moreover, it is amazing how exceptional I become at crafting words to sound apologetic, while managing to avoid a genuine apology the whole time. Finally, when I avoid taking full responsibility for my sin, it’s as if I am communicating that grace isn’t really all that necessary, or at least not for “the little things,” as I imagine them to be.

Let your Law do its work and expose the ugly and condemning reality of my sinful wrongdoing. Let it leave me with no place to hide so that I have no choice but to come entirely clean. Let me do so because I have complete confidence in the gospel, which assures me that not only have my sinful wrongdoings been forgiven, but so also have my half-hearted and incomplete confessions. Create in me a pure heart that recognizes both how much my heart needs purifying, and how completely you have purified it by your perfect sacrifice.
