To Worship with Intention

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred. As your Word is spoken and sung this morning, give me ears to listen to whatever message your Spirit knows I need to hear. I ask this for my own personal growth and sanctification. At the same time, keep me open-minded and perceptive enough to also consider what truths I might be able to pass along to others. Let me be especially attentive so that I may focus on both potential blessings. That way, I can be stretched and strengthened in my own faith, and I may also have a word of encouragement or edification to share with others. 

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

For a Deeper Commitment to You

Committed Savior,
When I consider the level of determination and commitment you demonstrated in carrying out my salvation, not only am I stunned and amazed, but it also causes gratitude to well up inside me. I simply will never be able to grasp the measure of your undeserved love, that you should go to such great lengths for me!

Reflecting on your commitment to me also has another positive effect: it drives me to want to increase my commitment to you in return. Help me to do exactly what you encourage in your Word as I run my race and throw off everything that hinders and entangles me. Those things don’t just slow me down – they are also vying for my focus and attention. Such distractions then also end up watering down my commitment to you, because I am spread too thin with all my concerns. Grant me singular focus, so that my commitment to you diminishes other distractions, and I follow in your footsteps more closely in all areas of my life.

For Focus

Faithful Lord,
The holidays bring a change of pace when it comes to plans and schedules. This can require paying attention to a number of responsibilities that are out of the norm. As I settle into the new year and return to my normal routine, I ask you to help me refocus. Help me to be present and engaged with what is in front of me, not overthinking recent events or being distracted by things to come. When I am at work, let me stay dialed in diligently to my work responsibilities. When I am home, let me enjoy my downtime and focused family time where applicable, but also keep me on top of my life responsibilities that require managing. Help me identify and eliminate distractions that rob me of my focus, so that I can give myself fully and faithfully to whatever is before me.

To Guard Against What Doesn’t Last

Blessed Redeemer,
If I want to be ready for you return on the Last Day, it means not only focusing on what lasts – your Word – but also guarding against what doesn’t. There is much in this world that begs for my attention. While much of it may be good, there is so much that is merely fleeting, passing away like the rest of the world. Guard me from being consumed by these distractions, from being overly concerned about what won’t last at the expense of your words and promises that will. See that I am detached from what is temporal and tuned in to what is eternal. Keep me from worry and anxiety over the little things and direct me to be invested in what matters while I watchfully wait for your return.

To Stay Focused

Dear Father,
There are so many distractions in this world that make it more challenging than ever just to stay focused. Some of these distractions are my own fault, while others are the product of living in such a distracted world. So much around me is vying for my attention, and too often I succumb and give in. It can be frustrating when I can’t accomplish the task at hand because I struggle to stay focused. 

Guard me from the weakness of permitting distractions as a means of procrastination. Help me identify possible distractions and give me the discipline to remove them whenever I need to focus. Where helpful, give me the wisdom to break down bigger tasks into smaller steps so that my need to focus is more manageable. Bless my progress by allowing me to see and to celebrate the results achieved through my focused efforts.
