For Growth in Giving

Generous Lord,
You are a Giver. You not only promise to provide all that we need, but are delighted to give it. We, on the other hand, are more naturally takers and receivers. The fall into sin revealed this very attitude, when Adam & Eve were more concerned with taking what they shouldn’t have. Ever since then, we have looked out for ourselves first, and give only after we’re sure we have enough (if we give at all!).

In repentance, rid us of this selfishness and greed. Just as you did not come to be served, but to serve, bend our hearts and will in the same direction – outward before inward. Free us from any enslavement to money or possessions, as well as the fear of not having enough, and cause us to imitate you as generous givers. Grow us into joyful first-fruit givers, worshiping you with our first and best instead of what’s left.  

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

To Put – and Keep – You First Daily

Greatest Treasure,
Although we so easily and regularly convince ourselves otherwise, there is never anything on our daily to-do list as valuable as our time with you. There is simply no replacement for daily time spent in your Word. No matter how packed our day may be, no matter how much we need to get done, no matter how many pressing issues we’re facing, do not allow us to deceive ourselves into believing that we don’t have time for you or that such time somehow limits what else we can accomplish. You call on us to seek your kingdom and your righteousness, with the assurance that you will take care of the rest. Help us show you that we believe your promise by giving you the first fruits of each day, every day, and not the leftovers. Then, show us how graciously and reliably you keep your promise. 

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

To Serve You with My Best

Light of the World,
This week of Epiphany, we reflect on the wise men who journeyed to worship the Savior. Their journey, coupled with their determination to track down their Savior, would have been remarkable enough to reflect how much they treasured their King. But they didn’t stop there. Instead, they arrived bearing the costliest of gifts. They gave their best for the Best.

Help me to do the same in my service and my gift-giving to you. Let my acts of service be willing, joyful, and generous. Let my gifts flow freely and full of faith. You were born to serve me with your life and death, then raised again to rule the whole universe for my good. Use this precious truth to move and motivate my whole-hearted, all-in service to you.
