For Artistic Gifts in Worship

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred. When we worship in your house, we see so much that draws the eyes of our hearts to you. Thank you for the gifts of creative vision combined with faith that you have granted to so many to edify us in worship. As the sun’s rays are filtered through palettes of stained glass, the colorful patterns evoke beauty and awe as our gaze is turned upward to ponder how you shine so brightly in our lives. Banners teach us while touching our hearts with rich symbols and imagery. Graphics put your Word into powerful pictures. The design and thoughtfulness put into the very sanctuary in which we worship capture theological truths, drawing us further into your presence. Thank you for the many artistic gifts used to magnify you and stir the souls of your people in worship. Continue to move many to use their skills and abilities for such a noble and holy purpose.

For Spouses to Speak Well of Each Other

Lord Jesus,
Lead husbands and wives to speak well not only to each other, but also about each other. When wives are together with other wives or husbands with other husbands, conversations can at times turn into gripe sessions about spouses, highlighting their negatives and piling on disrespectfully. Rather than celebrating respective spouses, expressions of disappointment and discontentment are shared. Whether intentions are light-hearted or more serious in nature, these kinds of complaint sessions cause damage to the marriages involved, while also dishonoring marriage in general. Help marriage partners not only to guard their tongues in such situations, but also to seize these opportunities to praise their spouses, to speak well of them, and to highlight their growth and progress. Rather than tearing down the fabric of marriage, let positive and productive conversations about spouses be more prominent, elevating marriage to the high and holy calling you have made it to be.

To Be Mindful of Other Worshipers

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred. It is a delight to gather together with so many believers for worship. As we worship together, keep me respectful of other worshipers. Sunday morning isn’t just about me, so keep me aware of my own tendencies, habits, or customs that might distract or annoy other worshipers. Instead, however I might be able to, help me serve others and enhance their worship so they are edified and uplifted, too. As we look out for each other in these ways while we worship, the body of Christ is built up, and you are glorified.

To Faithfully Use Our Gifts

Gracious Lord,
We don’t all share the same gifts, and we acknowledge that some are more gifted in certain areas than others. Regardless of the type or quality of our gifts, though, each of us can commit to using them faithfully. Since you can use every single gift in unique ways to build up the body of Christ, every gift we have is valuable. It also means your church and the ministry are not functioning optimally when gifts go unused. Let us encourage confidence in each other and spur one another on to maximize the gifts you’ve given us. Give us the courage to call out apathy and indifference when necessary, and to restore to one another the joy of salvation, that we might be eager and use our gifts for your kingdom purposes.

To Keep Me From Gossiping

Gracious Father,
Guard me from gossip on all fronts – from initiating it, from listening to it, and from passing it along to others. Should gossip ever reach our ears, let it die there. You call us not to tear down, discredit, or slander the reputation of others, but to speak well of them and defend them. When we justify discussing the negative words and actions of others because they’re true, what we don’t often realize – and need to confess – is that our hearts in those cases aren’t. Forgive me for speaking ill of others – even when it is the truth – when the motivations of my heart are malicious or unloving. Move me instead to use my words to build up and edify others, to praise and speak well of them, to guard and protect their reputation whenever I can, for a good name is a great treasure!

To Enrich My Time in the Word

Spirit of Enlightenment,
I treasure my time in the Word. Nevertheless, I still fall into the trap of thinking there are so many other things that need my attention first, which leads me to put off your Word until “later.” When this happens, the result is often that “later” never comes, or when it does, I have so much on my mind that my time in the Word is unfocused or distracted by other concerns. Guard me from the lie of “later.”

Let me approach my daily time in Scripture like first fruit giving, so that it gets the first and the best of my time. When I am reading it and reflecting on it, enlighten and enrich me, uncovering for me precious promises and truths to feed and refresh my soul. Keep me from treating time in your Word like another “to-do” item on my list. Instead, use that time to deepen the roots of my faith and strengthen my spirit, building me up and maturing me to live for you to produce the abundant harvest of good works which you prepared in advance for me to do.

To Worship with Intention

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred. As your Word is spoken and sung this morning, give me ears to listen to whatever message your Spirit knows I need to hear. I ask this for my own personal growth and sanctification. At the same time, keep me open-minded and perceptive enough to also consider what truths I might be able to pass along to others. Let me be especially attentive so that I may focus on both potential blessings. That way, I can be stretched and strengthened in my own faith, and I may also have a word of encouragement or edification to share with others.

To Measure My Words

Gracious Savior,
When I allow myself to become angry or irritated, especially by someone else’s words or actions, that is when I am most likely to unleash an unfiltered and unloving response of my own, either verbally or from a keyboard. Such words have never contributed positively to better understanding or resolution, and they never will. Furthermore, that kind of communication isn’t just hurtful to my neighbor; it’s also sin against you, my God. Have mercy on me and forgive my many thoughtlessly spoken (or typed!) words!

Instead, help me to speak only what builds others up. Let my words be words of encouragement, that others may find them to be a breath of fresh air. Even when I am called to admonish or correct, the words I use, along with my tone and body language, should better reflect the loving motives of my heart. If I am to speak in a way that edifies others and honors you, I need to be able to first keep my emotions in check. Let your Holy Spirit guard and guide my heart, so that the words which flow from it serve my neighbor and are always pleasing in your sight.
