DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

For Churches Facing Closure

Lord of the Church,
Thank you for establishing so many churches all over the world where your Word is proclaimed and the Sacraments are administered. While you promise that your Word will always endure, you make no such promise about individual churches. Like everything else in life, churches have a life cycle – they are planted and grow, they bear fruit for a time, and eventually they close their doors. Be with those churches near the end of their life cycle, as they struggle with difficult ministry decisions and limited resources. Comfort those carrying memories of a full church and active membership with the assurance that their ministry was never in vain, and that you used it to serve souls. Give pause to those inclined to make hasty decisions, so that they are sensitive to their fellow saints with treasured recollections of their church. Make them open to considering how they might still continue to bless other churches or ministries with their means or manpower, so that your kingdom still comes through their support of gospel efforts. Remember your people gathered in these sacred spaces, Lord, and the many years of faithful service they rendered to bring honor and glory to you.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

For Those Preparing for Ministry

Lord of the Church,
Thank you for all who are willing to pursue the path of public ministry. Those decisions aren’t made in a vacuum, but often come in connection with much support and encouragement from others. To serve others with your Word full-time is a noble calling. It is also one that you don’t take lightly, for you hold those in ministry to a higher standard as they handle your Word of truth and apply it as your representatives. Make future pastors, teachers, and staff ministers mindful of these realities as they give themselves fully to their studies. Grant them also the confidence that you always provide what is needed to those you call so that they can carry out their work faithfully. Bless their preparation and training, providing them with meaningful experience along the way that will reinforce their desire and commitment to serve you and your people in ministry.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

For My Home Church and Church Family

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred. Thank you for the blessing of being able to worship in my home congregation. Whether away for school, traveling frequently for work, or simply being unable to attend in person for one reason or another, it is a joy to worship in our own church. We get to smile at familiar faces, share laughs, and catch up with our church family. The sanctuary itself is a sacred space, a collection of ministry milestones and memories over the years that will forever be held in our hearts. Siblings were baptized, co-workers finally confirmed, family friends joined in marriage, and saints with secret struggles were renewed by your Body and Blood to keep battling. These are all woven together to form the unique and beautiful patchwork of people who are yours – and people I am blessed to call mine, too, for they are treasures to me. Thank you for each and every one of these trophies of grace who make up my church family, and for the cherished space where we gather.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

For All Those Serving in Your Church

Lord of the Church,
We are grateful for every soul who serves in the church. Thank you for the thorough theological and ministerial training our called workers have received. Let their leadership gifts serve to guide congregational ministry while also equipping others to lead. Thank you for dedicated lay leaders who willingly use their gifts and give of their time in ministry, offering up a pleasing sacrifice to you through their ministry. Thank you for those in the church who voluntarily tend to the daily needs of their congregations, honoring and glorifying you with their talents and abilities and serving their brothers and sisters in Christ. Bless called workers, lay leaders, and all willing volunteers with a harmonious spirit and the guidance of your Spirit to empower their congregations to faithfully sow the seed of your Word. Grant them joy and satisfaction in their work, and fulfill them with the privilege of giving themselves fully to you in their service. Strengthen our congregations and the whole body of Christ as each part eagerly excels at its work.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

For Those Who Serve on Sundays Unnoticed

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred. Many who serve on Sundays do so behind the scenes. Thank you for their willingness to give the gift of their time and talents in service to you and their congregations in various ways. Let them find a joyful reward in seeing how their service is a blessing to others. While they don’t serve for the recognition, prompt others to express their appreciation and to thank them regularly, so they feel valued. Use their service to build up others and to showcase the gospel as clearly and as beautifully as possible. Move them to always give their best, because you are worthy of nothing less.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

Thank You for Worship

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred. On this first day of Thanksgiving week, we are especially thankful for the blessing of worship, by which you dispense the riches of your grace. Where your Word is preached and your sacraments are administered, there you are placing your divine banquet before your people. Through it, let the Holy Spirit continue to kindle in believers old and new a genuine longing for and love of worship. Use worship to draw them more deeply into your Word and to strengthen their faith’s grip on your gracious promises. As believers grow in their appreciation for worship, lead them to be protective of their time in your house and encourage each other to do the same. The more they come to gather, equip them also to go, shining the light of their faith brightly, and eagerly speaking about what they have seen and heard.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

For Those Carrying Out the Church’s Work

Holy Spirit,
So many are needed to carry out the ministry of the church. You provide not only pastors and teachers to carry out that work, but also very capable and gifted individuals to oversee and coordinate the work. While some are paid for this work, most are not. Thank you for working in them the desire to use their gifts and time for this noble purpose. Make their service a blessing to fellow believers. Bring them joy and reward in carrying out their responsibilities faithfully. Use them to support others when necessary and to lead when called. Build up your kingdom through their efforts, and meet all of their spiritual needs so that they can carry out their work well.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

To Be More Kingdom-Minded With My Possessions

Loving Savior,
You praised the shrewd manager who made the most of his situation and worked it to his own advantage. Your praise, though, is not intended to compel us to follow in his footsteps concerning his pursuit of personal gain. Rather, we can imitate his shrewdness in a spiritual sense as we consider how our station in life and the connections we have could be advantageous to the kingdom.

You place worldly resources all around us that can certainly be used in support of gospel ministry. Grant me greater awareness of my own personal connections and the resources at my disposal that can be utilized in kingdom-minded ways. Expand my view beyond the local ministry of my own congregation to also consider how I might be in a position to help facilitate the ministry of other congregations or organizations, on a larger scale or in different ways. Shift my perspective more and more to see all that you have entrusted to me as a means by which your gospel reach can be extended.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

For Dealing with Difficult Church Members

Lord of the Church,
You call us to gather together and unite with fellow believers to carry out our mission and ministry together. When this happens at the local congregational level, you use us both to be a blessing to others and to be blessed by others as the body of Christ. Thank you for the many influential believers you have brought into my life through my church family.

Yet, just as in all other areas of life, church is not without difficult people. While this doesn’t surprise us, knowing your church is made up of sinner saints, it can be a unique challenge because believers are called to hold each other to a higher standard. Forgive me first of all for the many times and ways I’ve personally fallen short of those standards and been difficult for others. Let me extend to others the same grace and patience that have so often been extended to me.

At the same time, don’t allow others to mistake that patience for permission when they are in the wrong or need to repent. Help me distinguish between spiritual immaturity and obstinance, and to separate ignorance or eccentricities from deliberate disobedience. Lead me to assume the best of all of my fellow church members, especially the particularly difficult ones. Guard any differences from becoming divisiveness, and continue to build up your church through the unique members of the body of Christ.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

To Eagerly Serve My Church

Selfless Savior,
While most people think of Sunday morning worship when they think of church, the local congregation is really about so much more. Yes, worship is the highlight of the believer’s week, serving us Word and sacrament, and providing a foretaste of what awaits us in the future, but you build up the body of Christ is in so many other ways, too. Churches carry out your work through schools, Bible studies, and various other ministries and acts of service both internally and externally.

While we are grateful for church workers who are called to guide and equip us for this work, help each of us to see the important roles we have in helping carry this work out. Service isn’t about official roles or titles, but about a willing spirit – a spirit willing to imitate Jesus and wash my neighbor’s feet. Move men everywhere to demonstrate servant leadership in your church, looking to serve first rather than be served. When opportunities or needs arise, grant us the faith-focused desire to get our hands dirty and eagerly jump in. Lead us to support our church workers and each other by making their work a joy and not a burden. Compel us to serve our congregations because through our service, you’re not just getting work done through us, but also in us.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
