To Be More Decisive

God of Wisdom,
When I am wrestling with endless responsibilities and decisions to make, it can feel overwhelming. Then, when I feel overwhelmed, I feel the pull to put off, to procrastinate, or just to avoid doing anything at all – even though I know from experience that doing so only makes matters worse!

Help me overcome indecision and spur me on to take action – any action. Indecision can be so crippling; sometimes, even making the wrong decision is the better alternative, since it gets me a step closer to the right solution. Grant me the confidence to be decisive and to trust you to guide me in the way that is best. 

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

To Trust You Wholeheartedly

Providential Father,
Your promises, which are always trustworthy and true, assure me that you will provide for all of my physical and spiritual needs. But, even though I believe it, I still struggle to trust it. Doubt and worry come so naturally and so easily to me, prompting me to think I’m just better off taking matters into my own hands and controlling the outcome on my own. This usually results in my experiencing the all-too-familiar lesson of how foolish it is to pretend I could care for or provide for myself better than you. Therefore, I ask you not to improve my prowess in providing, but rather to increase my trust. Steer me away from self-reliance and toward a deeper confidence in you. Lead me to lean on you not hole-heartedly, but wholeheartedly.

To Trust Your Promises

Gracious Lord,
Your promises are trustworthy and true because you only speak the truth and cannot lie. So, when I doubt them or struggle to believe them, the issue is never on your end, but always on mine. Whether I question them because they seem too impossible or because I know I am too unworthy, put my doubts to rest. Erase them and replace them with unwavering confidence in all that you say and do, knowing that your commitment to me and your dedication to my salvation are unyielding. Help me see all the ways you keep your promises on a daily basis, and firm up my faith as a result.

To Remember That You’re in Control

Mighty God,
No matter what I’m dealing with right now, Lord, I can always use the reminder that everything is going to be OK. As a believer, I know that you hold me in the palm of your hand, that you work out everything – good and bad – for my benefit, and that I will never face anything alone. With this confidence, help me to live in faith, not fear. Equip me to win my battles against worry, remembering that there is no harm or danger that can ever separate me from you and your love. The certainty of my salvation is my security and the source of my strength. Let me rest in your peace and find comfort in knowing that neither you nor those who are yours will ever come to ruin at the hands of the evil one.

To Guide Me in Self-Discipline

Sanctifying Spirit,
Along with power and love, you equip us with a spirit of self-discipline (2 Timothy 1:7). Apart from you we only know darkness and are enslaved by sinful and rebellious attitudes. Without your enlightenment, the evil one deceives us, hiding our lack of discipline behind a false freedom that convinces us we’re in control and in charge of our lives.

But, when your grace opens our eyes to see the truth, we see how blind we truly were. Only by faith do we welcome and embrace a spirit of self-discipline. We desire to turn away from temptation and go to war against wickedness. We are eager to rebuke unrighteousness in our own lives and shield ourselves from Satan. Intensify the spirit of self-discipline within us so that we are determined to establish sound spiritual boundaries in our lives to help guard and protect ourselves. Guide us to pursue what is good and pure and noble in your sight, so that we magnify you with our whole lives.

To Let Your Love Flow Through Me to Others

Loving God,
Not only have you equipped me with a spirit of power, but also of love and self-discipline (2 Timothy 1:7). Without first being on the recieving end of your love, I would struggle mightily to love others as you call me to. This is obvious because even with your love I have a hard time loving others well! 

Therefore, whenever I find it challenging to love my neighbor, shift my thoughts away from my own inadequacy and instill in me the confidence of your Spirit working in me. Jesus’ perfect love overcomes my lacking love. And, just as Jesus was equipped with the Holy Spirit, so am I. So let the love of both the Spirit and the Son wash over me and flow through me to others. Lead me to focus less on my flawed love for others, and more on being a conduit for your amazing love to be extended to others through me.

To Live Confidently in Your Power

Mighty God,
Move me to take to heart your reminder that you have not equipped me with a spirit of timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline (2 Timothy 1:7). While your power and might are readily on display throughout the pages of Scripture, I forget that, by faith, I am privy to that very power. Because I know my shortcomings and am well aware of my own disappointments, any confidence I have easily dwindles. I am reluctant to speak up or take action when the opportunities arise. I let my fear of past failures prevent me from moving forward.

Direct me to look to you for strength and power – a strength and power that I could never match on my own! Where my own power would buckle and collapse, your power is strong enough to move mountains. Since you are the providing this power, I don’t have to look within myself for these qualities, but to you. Where my self-doubt has crippled me, let me act simply on faith, certain that you will provide me with the words and actions to move forward with confidence. Grant me a fearless faith that is powerfully spurred on not by who I am, but by whose I am.

To Witness with Confidence and Courage

Savior God,
You alone are the God who saves. While there are more false gods than could ever be counted, whether worshipped through false religions or idols manufactured in the hearts of men, salvation is found only in you, the true and Triune God. I know and confess this, but I don’t always reflect it confidently in my witnessing. Too often, bringing Jesus into the conversation never even crosses my mind. Then, when it does, I quickly imagine several negative scenarios or responses to justify my silence. Help me overcome myself, Lord, and let what I know in my mind and heart bear fruit from my lips. If you alone save, that is reason enough for me to make sure your name and your salvation are clearly made known to all people. Give me both confidence and courage to boldly bless others with your name as I magnify you in my witness to others.

To Live in the Confidence of the Resurrection

Victorious Savior,
By your resurrection, you solidified and secured all that was necessary for our salvation. We are free from Satan’s slavery, from sin’s condemnation, and from death’s eternal claim on us. You are victorious, and through faith in you, that victory is also ours. 

We are not longer among the spiritually walking dead, but having been raised with you, are victorious and alive. Let your resurrection give us a spiritual swagger that allows us to live boldly in confidence. Steer us away from claims or feelings of victimhood or pity when we forget who we are in you. Instead, make us eager to be the salt and light you have made us to be in this world. Let us not shy away from conversations or behavior that would celebrate you, but embrace all such opportunities to exude the confidence we have as victors through the Resurrection.

For Full Confidence in My Salvation – Prayers

Gracious Mediator,
Some things in life we feel more confident about than others. We carry out certain responsibilities effortlessly, while others cause uncertainty or even anxiety. If our status before you relied on any effort or requirement on our part, our lives would be a constant carousel of chaos, questions and confusion. 

Thankfully, there is no question and there is no doubt. With you as our mediator, we have full confidence that all of the Father’s righteous requirements have been met and fully satisfied through you. And, since you gave yourself as the ransom for all people, no more payment remains and there is no unsettled debt outstanding. Because we stand before you with the confidence we have through you, make us also bold pray with that same confidence. We have nothing to fear and stand only to gain from your good grace as you choose to bless us accordingly.
