To Bless Parent/Teacher Relationships

God of Wisdom,
As students make their way back into classrooms, see that they grow this school year in wisdom and in spirit. To help facilitate their growth, please foster a healthy relationship between parents and teachers. When they are on the same page and enjoy healthy communication, students benefit greatly. Give parents the humility to accept responsibility when their children have contributed to creating undesirable learning environments or classroom settings, and make them willing to work with teachers to address any concerns or behavior. Give teachers patience, understanding, and the humility to recognize that certain situations in homes can sometimes adversely affect a student’s ability to engage or participate in learning. Provide ample support for teachers and faculty, and let parents feel heard and listened to in a way that builds trust between them. Remind parents that teachers are trained professionals who are qualified to instruct their children, and give them confidence in their ability to do so.

For Fathers to Be Present in Their Children’s Lives

Faithful Father,
Thank you for the blessing of fatherhood. And thank you for the blessing of forgiveness for failures in fatherhood. Without your grace and patience, fathers could never measure up. Daily, you are present with your pardon in the lives of fathers. Help fathers also be present in the lives of their children. Let their shared interests stem not only from what dads enjoy, but also from the fascinations of their children. Lead dads to regularly give their children the first fruits of their schedule rather than the leftovers. Strengthen the unique bond between fathers and children through shared experiences and joint projects, and connect them through thoughtful conversations. When earthly fathers are present for their children, they provide a powerful and illustrative reminder that you, our Heavenly Father, are always present for your children, too.

For Grace and Peace for Mothers Troubled by Abortion

Lord of Life,
The privilege of pregnancy and the elation of embracing the child you just gave birth to are special experiences unique to mothers. Sadly, Lord, for reasons that range from deep trauma to mere inconvenience, many mothers have ended their child’s life by choosing to have an abortion. While we mourn the loss of the unborn, we pray also for mothers who have made this burdensome decision. Where mothers have hardly given the slightest thought to the life they ended, nor shown any remorse for their actions, work godly repentance in them that ultimately elevates their regard for your gift of life and eventually brings them to you. For all mothers who have had an abortion and are still carrying guilt, shame, and regret because of it, overwhelm them with your gracious gift of forgiveness and tender love for them. Protect them from the judgment and condemnation of others. Grant them complete healing and wholeness in you, and let them find welcome and support in the arms of the church.

To Bless and Equip Parents

Loving Father,
When you bless a husband and wife with a child, you provide them with a special gift. Children bring a richness into marriage that simply cannot be experienced in any other way. Yet even as we thank you for these treasures, we acknowledge the added challenges and frustrations parents experience in raising them. Bless fathers and mothers with a unified approach in parenting styles. As they train their children together, help them always view each other as allies, not competitors or even enemies. When they carry out discipline, grant them patience and resolve, and an evangelically firm spirit. Ensure that they do not neglect the spiritual, emotional, or physical health of their children, but rather raise them to see the important and interconnected role that each of these plays in the overall well-being of their young ones. Let children experience a depth of grace and forgiveness in how their parents interact with each other and how they treat their kids. See that God’s Word dwells richly in the home, so that as children see and know their Savior’s love, they then grasp the blessing of gratefully carrying out joyful obedience.

For Fathers to Be a Reflection of Their Father

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred. To belong to you and to call you Father is a joy and privilege unrivaled by any other, and to be in your presence for worship each week highlights that reality even more. Moreover, as you draw us closer to you through your Word, you also equip fathers to be passionate about carrying out their vital role in the home. Raise up spiritually dedicated fathers who are devoted to passing on their greatest treasure – Jesus – to their children. Nurture this devotion in them by first maturing their own faith and deepening their desire to know you more and more. Then, enable them to be your reflection as they father their children.

Give them gentleness and patience, while remaining evangelically firm in their discipline. Make fathers willing and eager to forgive, without being permissive or tolerant of sin. Let children see what strong spiritual leadership looks like in their fathers, not only so they grow up appreciating and respecting those in authority, but also – and of far greater importance – so that they grow up enthralled by you and the pursuit of your faithfulness and righteousness. Enrich fathers with every spiritual blessing they need to find purpose and great satisfaction in fulfilling this high and holy calling well.

To Protect the Unborn

Loving Father,
The subject of abortion serves as a tragic reminder that this dying world is a far cry from the deathless creation you first brought into existence by the breath of your life. No matter the rationale behind it, anytime an abortion takes place, a child never receives the opportunity to take that first breath, and because of that, we grieve. We plead for your protection on behalf of babies in the womb who are unable to defend themselves. Surround those considering abortion with caring and compassionate counsel from others who want what is best for mother and child according to your Word. Lead expecting mothers to treasure your gift of life and grant them the fortitude to make sacrifices for the benefit of their unborn child. Compel fathers to be present and responsible, and use them to speak as a voice in favor of life. Spare those in the womb, Lord, and thwart the plans of all who promote the option of putting the unborn to death.

For Children Without Parents

Abba Father,
Come to the aid of children without their biological parents. Heal the hurting hearts of those who lost their parents through tragedy. Soothe the troubled minds of those given up for adoption who feel unwanted and struggle with abandonment issues. Bring peace to those bearing the weight of shame because of incarcerated parents. In all situations like these, provide loving and nurturing environments for children to be cared for and raised. Richly bless those willing to step in and make sacrifices to love these needy little ones. If they don’t already know you, allow them to be introduced to you, their loving Heavenly Father. Point them to the cross so that they may know the depth of your love. Then, enable these children to love others deeply because they know how deeply loved they are by you. Meet all of their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs in accordance with your lavish generosity.

For Mothers

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred. We gather on this day of worship to praise and adore you, and to be fed and forgiven by you. In addition to those blessings, today we have the opportunity to thank you for your gift of mothers, and to celebrate how you enrich our lives through them. We thank you for the tender care that so many grew up receiving from their mothers, while also acknowledging those who were not fortunate enough to experience that kind of love. Heal the wounds of those scarred by sad or painful memories associated with their moms, and make them whole by your abiding grace and presence. Grant patience and perseverance to those longing to be mothers, consolation and comfort to all mothers who have experienced the loss of a child, and peace and calm to all feeling overwhelmed by motherhood. Thank you especially for mothers who faithfully bring Jesus to their children in their homes, and their children to Jesus in his home through worship.

For Marriages in Seasons of Change

Wonderful Counselor,
Guide and help husbands and wives who are navigating major seasons of change in marriage. While great marriages always require dedication and effort, certain times of transition can also be especially challenging. Newlyweds quickly become aware of each other’s behaviors and habits that may require extra time to adjust to and work through. New parents see how the blessing of a child affects not just their new responsibilities as father and mother, but also their relationship with each other. After investing so much time and focus in raising their children, empty-nesters are often surprised at the energy and attention needed to rekindle their own affections and desires for each other, which they may have allowed to drift while the demands of children took center stage in their marriage. In each of these seasons of change – and all other times of transition – provide husbands and wives with extra measures of patient understanding, clear and consistent communication, and gracious, willing-to-forgive spirits.

For Families with Little Ones in Worship

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred. But worship is a unique challenge for parents with little children. Thank you for the Christian parents who prioritize bringing their little ones to worship. Some mornings, before they even pull into the church parking lot, they have already experienced a day’s worth of stressful wear and tear. Provide them with the strength and determination to follow through with worship, and through it, rejuvenate their spirits. Fill the members of their church families with compassion to know when to lend a helping hand to frazzled moms and dazed dads. Direct congregations to consider how they might become more family-friendly. Give parents the discernment and discipline to raise their children to view worship with reverence and respect. Through these formative years in church, lay a solid foundation in children that paves the way for a lifetime of faithful worship attendance, so their hearts remain saturated by the gospel.
