For Spouses to Grow as Companions

Loving Savior,
The blessing of companionship in marriage can be lost or forgotten when couples let busyness deceive them into believing they don’t have time for each other. The truth is, we are only as busy as we allow ourselves to be. When spouses take on more responsibilities and routinely say yes to requests, they don’t always stop to realize that in doing so, they are essentially saying no to each other. Help married couples take time to pause and discuss together what they are willing to add into their lives, so they consider what they are also giving up. Instill in them a determination to guard their time together fiercely, recognizing that companionship and closeness require both quantity and quality time with each other. Through these efforts, deepen their connection, strengthen their bond of unity, and increase their desire for each other.

To Extend Hospitality to Others

Friend of Sinners,
In our rushed, always-on-the-go lives, failing to slow down isn’t just unhealthy for us; it also affects our neighbor negatively – not necessarily by what we do, but by what we leave undone. Constant busyness and scrambling to keep up with stacked schedules leaves precious little time for hospitality. We easily overlook and neglect our neighbor’s needs when we allow little or no margin in our lives. Sometimes we even justify avoiding others on the basis of our busyness. Help us pause and ponder. Make us aware of those you’ve placed before us to whom we can show kindness, welcoming them into our lives with genuine friendliness and hospitable hearts. As we share our blessings and belongings with others whenever the chances arise, we show them how valued they are as we put love into action.

To Prioritize Margin and Rest

Lord God,
In a culture that celebrates busyness as a badge of honor, it isn’t always easy to configure rest and margin into our schedules. We let the fear of being considered lazy or being perceived as not hardworking push us beyond our limits. But you created us to need rest – physically, emotionally, and spiritually. You modeled it by resting on the seventh day after creation. Even Jesus prioritized prayer and alone time throughout his ministry. Guard us from consistently putting off rest and downtime until “later.” Help us instead to view it as an essential part of our calling, enabling us to serve you and others more fully. Reassure us that you have already completed the work of our salvation in its entirety, relieving us from that burden and freeing us to enjoy your gift of rest and recovery.

To Keep My Stress in Check

Prince of Peace,
With Christmas two weeks away, stress levels can quickly rise as each passing day means deadlines and duties become increasingly more pressing. Help me to keep my composure when others are impatient or irritated, and keep me from displaying such behavior, too. Remind me that the peace announced by the angels at Jesus’ birth is mine here and now, and in the days ahead. While it seems counterintuitive with so much that needs to get done, make time reading from and reflecting on your Word and promises a priority as much now as in any other time of the year. This ensures that I am staying prepared in the right way during Advent and Christmas. Finally, whenever possible, use me also to help others keep their stress and anxiety levels in check by pointing them to you.
