For Focus

Dear Lord,
As technology continues to advance exponentially and the world moves at an increased pace, our ability to remain focused has suffered tremendously. Tools and tech that are supposed to save us time end up deceiving us into thinking we can take on more and get more done. We are tethered to devices that are designed to distract us. We are acquainted with more people than ever, which also makes us aware of more problems and troubles than ever. 

Help us, Lord. First, lead us to set time with you as our non-negotiable priority. Then, provide us with clarity, discernment, and direction, so that we are empowered to take control of our schedules and days. Finally, fix our attention on the things that we have determined matter most, and keep us focused on each responsibility we take on. Let us be present when we are with people and aid us in concentrating whenever a task is before us. In these ways, Lord, equip us to give our best fully to you and others.

To Focus on Others in Conversation

Devoted Savior,
Whenever I have opportunities to interact with others, help me be more engaged and attentive. It’s natural for us to default to making conversations about us; what isn’t natural is deliberately being interested in the other speaker. Steer me away from my tendency to shift the focus back on me and prompt me to ask better questions that reflect genuine curiosity about the other person. The better equipped I am in expressing interest and attention to others, the more valued and appreciated they feel. Help me grow in this area so that whenever others walk away from a conversation with me, they are more blessed than stressed.

For Focused Worship

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred. Nevertheless, they can also be filled with distractions. On their own, such distractions would pose difficult enough challenges for us, but when coupled with our short attention span and inability to focus, worship requires work! Minimize distractions for us while also sharpening our focus and attention. Let the texts of our songs and hymns touch our hearts. When the Word of God is read and preached, enable us to dial in with both our ears and our minds, giving thought to what you are revealing to us. Draw us into a deeper dialogue with you when praying. Make us mindful of the gifts we bring as offerings to you. Take hold of our hearts this morning in worship, and fill them richly with your divine grace and blessing.

To Listen Attentively to Others

Gracious Lord,
You are never too busy to listen to my prayers. No matter how distant or persistent I may be, your ears are always open. You hear my requests and answer them in the way that is best for me. I pray you never turn your ear or your face away from me.

Let your willingness to listen to me spur on my willingness to listen to others. No matter how busy I may be, keep me always willing to listen attentively to others. So many wish to talk, but so few can patiently and properly listen, too. Use me as a sounding board for others to share and open up, and as I actively listen, make me aware of opportunities to love and serve my neighbor in their need. When so many in today’s world are hurried and rushed, let me stand out by slowing down and listening to others.
