DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

For a Healthy View of Worship Attendance

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred. One of the greatest blessings of belonging to a church is gathering together for worship. While it is certainly an uplifting encouragement whenever we get to see God’s house filled, it’s too easy to allow our Sunday morning mood to be shaped by who is or isn’t in worship, or by numbers and attendance. Keep me from allowing external details like that to rob me of the internal joy that comes from being in your presence in your house. See that I have a spiritual healthy, loving concern for those who aren’t present, always assuming the best of them when I think of them. When I consider all of the ways that Satan works to keep God’s people out of his house on Sunday morning, lead me to rejoice by seeing everyone in attendance as a victor who won that battle that morning.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

To Love Others Every Day

God of Love,
Lead me to love others every day, and not just on special occasions or designated holidays. While such occasions can serve as good reminders to love one another and to make sure we express that love through words and actions, your call to love others applies 24/7. When we are intentional about loving our neighbor (or enemy!) at all times, we then serve as reflections of your love at all times.

When I find it difficult to love others, direct my thoughts both to your perfect example of love throughout your life and also to your loving sacrifice for my life. May those spur on my love. When it is easier to love others, keep that love from turning into favoritism. Generate an increase of love in our society to counter division and hate, without allowing the guise of love to compromise the truth.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

To Handle Success Well

Generous Giver,
Help me to handle success well. Whenever you grant it, it is natural for me to want to take credit for it. When I consider what it takes to achieve any measure of success, all I tend to see is my hard work and effort leading up to it. But since all that I have is from you, including any gifts and ability to work in the first place, how foolish it is of me to claim success as my own.

Instead, let me see success as it really is: a gift from you. When you bless me with it, may it be accompanied by a grateful heart, so that I first direct my thanks and praise to you. Then, lead me to humbly acknowledge and thank others around me who surely also helped me achieve it. Protect me from my own arrogance or overconfidence by training me to appreciate every success as it truly is, an undeserved blessing from my gracious and generous God.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

To Handle Disappointment Well

Lord God,
Help me to handle disappointment well. Some letdowns carry more weight than others, depending on the expectations or the time, energy, and resources invested. Whether the impact is minimal or widespread, guide me to manage the disappointment in a healthy way that honors you.

As I manage these struggles and reflect on them when they arise, give me the wisdom to patiently review them so that any needed changes may be able to be made in the future. When this isn’t the case, let me accept the outcome and move forward with the confidence that you are still very much able to bless any new or adjusted plans which may arise out of the ashes of disappointment. Remind me that regardless of any outcome, you are over all things and you promise to work out all things – even disappointment – for the good of your people, including me.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

To Keep on Learning

God of all Wisdom,
Give me the humility to keep on learning. When I feel overconfident in my own knowledge and am arrogant regarding my intellect, humble me. Show me how little I truly know and how much I have to learn.

In our world today, we are surrounded by unlimited information, virtually all of which is accessible in one way or another via the technology we carry around in our pockets. Give me discernment about what to learn, for there is no shortage of useless information, and not all learning edifies and builds up.

Fill me with childlike wonder over the pursuit of knowledge. And, as I learn, let there be for me no greater joy in the pursuit of knowledge than that which is truly the beginning of wisdom: the fear of the Lord.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

To Avoid Procrastination

Gracious Father,
All that I have is from you, including the gift of time and the ability to participate in meaningful work in so many different ways. Nevertheless, I find it too easy to put off and procrastinate any number of responsibilities at any given time. When I don’t manage your gift of time well and I prioritize what I want to do ahead of what I should do, I end up playing catch-up on my commitments and tasks. That can lead to frustration for others and build mistrust. Moreover, procrastination can result in rushed efforts that are not carried out as well as they might otherwise have been. Help me to disrupt this poor habit and focus on responsibly carrying out what I have been tasked with in a timely fashion, allowing me the opportunity to do all things well.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

For Shared Social Events

Kind Father,
Thank you for social events and gatherings that bring people together to enjoy. An annual event like the Super Bowl provides us with opportunities to connect and laugh together as human beings. Regardless of the outcome, experiences involving food, friends, and the fellowship shared together are gifts from you that I can easily overlook. Thank you for these events you place into our lives often simply to gladden our hearts and bring us joy.

When we engage with one another at events like this, you often open doors for us to check in and catch up with friends and family, and even meet new people. These interactions can make us aware of little moments to encourage or uplift others and informally serve needs they may have. But even if those windows of opportunity don’t open, we are every bit as grateful for positive experiences like these to lift our spirits and share good times with others. These, too, are gifts of kindness from your generous hand. Thank you for them.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

For the Example of Faithful Elderly Worshippers

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred. One of the ways I am encouraged on Sunday mornings is through the faithful attendance of the elderly. Even though they are in the final season of life, in which the energy and vigor of younger years has long since passed, worship is both a priority and a rich reward for them. Week in and week out, barring any health concerns or travel plans, many seniors are as dedicated as can be to going to church. Use their examples to inspire and encourage others along with me, so that we aspire to walk in their footsteps and increasingly long to be drawn closer to you in worship. Prompt me to give thought to the circumstances of these faithful spiritual warriors, so that I can help meet whatever needs they may have that will allow them to continue being both encouraged and encouragers on Sunday mornings.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

To Overcome Irritations

Patient Father,
Sometimes it doesn’t seem to take much to set me off. The littlest thing can irritate me. I want to have better control over my emotions than to let such trivial things get the better of me. When I become aware of anyone or anything that is starting to cause that kind of a reaction in me, give me pause and help me retain my composure. In those moments, remind me that while I may not have control over the things happening to me or around me, I do have complete control over how I respond. Redirect my thoughts away from the source of my irritation and toward anything else that is positive or uplifting. Grant me instead a spirit of gratitude so that I may be filled with peace.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

To Keep Me Connected to the Vine

Lord Jesus,
You are the vine, we are the branches. When we remain in you, you promise to remain in us and bear much fruit. Keep me always connected to you through your Word and Sacrament. Then I not only have the confidence of your presence, but also the assurance that you will work through me to bless others. While there is much in life that seeks to cut me off from you, strengthen and sustain me to always abide in you.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
