DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

For Your Musical Gifts in Worship

God of Wisdom,
Sundays are sacred. One of the many cherished blessings of worship is your gift of music. Thank you for all who use their gifts of music to edify those who gather in your house. Whether a congregation benefits from the privilege of a full or part-time worship coordinator or relies on technology for instrumentation or singing, we acknowledge that worship without music simply isn’t the same. When the sung Word proclaims your promises in connection with the spoken Word, your people are built up in their faith, and you are glorified. Thank you for the hours of practice and preparation from those making music with their hands and voices. Continue to raise up the next generation of musicians, training them to keep Christ at the center of worship through the gift of music.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

For Struggling Spouses to Keep Fighting for Their Marriage

Loving Lord,
When a marriage is healthy, it can stand alone as the most incredible relationship two people can experience. But when on life support, a dying marriage can feel like one of the most loathsome relationships imaginable. Today I pray for those in unhealthy marriages who are struggling so mightily that divorce seems imminent. Intervene, Lord, and in your mercy do whatever it takes to help them turn the corner. I pray that you guard and protect all marriages from the specific sins of adultery and desertion that can shatter a marriage and open the door to permissible divorce. Even when those sins do take place, though, lavish husbands and wives with an abundance of your grace to extend to each other liberally. Make them strong and willing to fight – not against each other, but for each other.  Give clarity to their communication, so they know what the real issues are, and where the real work needs to take place. Surround them with other couples in strong marriages who are willing to guide, counsel, and support them in any way. Provide them with hope and renew their love for and dedication to each other and to you, so they come to embrace their marriage as a treasure worth fighting for.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

For Fathers to Be a Reflection of Their Father

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred. To belong to you and to call you Father is a joy and privilege unrivaled by any other, and to be in your presence for worship each week highlights that reality even more. Moreover, as you draw us closer to you through your Word, you also equip fathers to be passionate about carrying out their vital role in the home. Raise up spiritually dedicated fathers who are devoted to passing on their greatest treasure – Jesus – to their children. Nurture this devotion in them by first maturing their own faith and deepening their desire to know you more and more. Then, enable them to be your reflection as they father their children.

Give them gentleness and patience, while remaining evangelically firm in their discipline. Make fathers willing and eager to forgive, without being permissive or tolerant of sin. Let children see what strong spiritual leadership looks like in their fathers, not only so they grow up appreciating and respecting those in authority, but also – and of far greater importance – so that they grow up enthralled by you and the pursuit of your faithfulness and righteousness. Enrich fathers with every spiritual blessing they need to find purpose and great satisfaction in fulfilling this high and holy calling well.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

For Those Getting Married This Summer

Lord of Love,
I ask you to bless the weddings scheduled over the course of the summer months. Let your hand guide the plans that are still in motion, so that everything goes as smoothly as possible for so many on their special day. Yet, even when there are hiccups or disappointments, equip the bride and groom with the resiliency to manage them, since they will inevitably encounter similar discouragements together in their marriage as well. Fill husband and wife with so much mutual joy and elation over each other that any slip-ups are easily overshadowed and forgotten. Cause their hearts to swell with gratitude as they experience your goodness. See that the message in the ceremony highlights the necessity and blessing of growing a marriage around you, centering it on your perfect obedience for them and building it on the foundation of the cross and empty tomb. Let such marriages be conduits of your love, overflowing with boundless grace and unlimited forgiveness, so that they beautifully mirror your loving, sacrificial devotion to your Church.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

To Grow in Confession

God of Grace,
I want to more fully appreciate your gift of grace. In order for that to happen, I need to grow in identifying my sin and acknowledging it to you. Help me make this practice of confessing my sin a regular part of my life. Through repentance, not only am I forced to face the frequency of my sin, but also trained to regret the frustrating repetition of it, leading me to despise my sin as I should. Most importantly, the more aware I am of my sin, the more deeply I appreciate that your grace completely covers it. When I get better at being real about my sin, instead of excusing, justifying, or downplaying it, that is when your grace becomes more and more real to me, too.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

For the Blessings of Accessibility in Worship

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred. Thank you for the many technological advances that make worship accessible to so many. Those physically unable to gather in person for worship can watch or listen along online. Smartphones aid the visually and audibly impaired in truly amazing ways, removing so many barriers that would have hindered their worship in the past. A screen can assist the single parent managing multiple little ones, as well as the elderly whose arthritic hands might otherwise struggle with heavy hymnals. A printed service folder may allow an unfamiliar first-time worshiper to follow along more easily at first. Numerous apps and online services both expand the ways we can give while also simplifying the gift-giving process. Thank you for all of these advances. Give us prudence to utilize them wisely, and lead us to regularly rejoice over so many channels by which so many have access to their Savior and his grace.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

For Courage to Do the Right Thing

Mighty God,
I regularly find myself in situations with the opportunity to do the wrong thing. I am invited to join in the gossip. I am nudged to have one more drink than I should. I am pressured to misuse your gift of sex. The list goes on. I don’t pretend that all of these are someone else’s fault, either, as I am well aware that I am only tempted by them because of my own sinful inclinations. As much as possible, therefore, give me the wisdom to avoid putting myself in those situations in the first place. Nevertheless, when I do face them, give me the courage of faith to do the right thing. Help me control my thoughts and desires. Curb any sinful urges within me. Provide a way out, as you promise to, and open my eyes both to see and to seize that way out. Create in me the genuine desire to be more eager to be a good and godly influence than to allow myself to be negatively influenced and misrepresent you. When I fail, be there with your grace to turn my forgiven failures into the motivation to do right the next time.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

To Delight in Holy Communion

Precious Savior,
Whether the burden of guilt I carry over my sin is heavy or light, deepen my love for the privilege of receiving the Lord’s Supper to lift that burden entirely. When I acknowledge and confess my sin in humble penitence, you invite me to remember the dear price you paid for that sin, along with its guilt and shame. In a miraculous way that defies intellect and demands faith, you bring together your body and blood with bread and wine, so that what I receive with my mouth also restores my soul. And, sharing this sacred meal with fellow believers united by the same confession of faith, conviction of sin, and confidence of forgiveness, edifies and encourages us collectively. Therefore, gather together the communion of saints regularly for Holy Communion, so that through their proclamation of your death, you refresh their spirits and rejuvenate them to faithfully carry out their Christian calling. Help me to hold this blessing close to my heart and treasure it always.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

To Love and Care for My Body and Life

Loving Father,
While I acknowledge that I am fearfully and wonderfully made, I must confess that I do not always reflect that in how I take care of – or rather neglect – my body. Indeed, if the attention and care I give to my physical health serve to indicate how much I value my body and life, I am embarrassed to admit the conclusion anyone would have to draw. I am sorry. Forgive me.

Thankfully, that is exactly what you do: forgive me. I do not live under shame or guilt, but under grace. You do not delight in finding fault, but in forgiving. The new life you daily call me to live in through my baptism is not merely spiritual, but flows into the blessing of physical as well. Since you redeemed not just my soul, but my body as well, steer me away from viewing it pessimistically or speaking of it pejoratively, and elevate how I view my own body. Whatever size and shape it is, help me to embrace and love it as you do – a gift to be cared for. Instill in me a healthy mindset that celebrates progress over perfection regarding exercise, working out, and anything that seeks to avoid being overly sedentary. Thank you for my body and life, and for the godly desire to treasure and care for them.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

DAILY PRAYERS FOR GUYS

For Churches Facing Closure

Lord of the Church,
Thank you for establishing so many churches all over the world where your Word is proclaimed and the Sacraments are administered. While you promise that your Word will always endure, you make no such promise about individual churches. Like everything else in life, churches have a life cycle – they are planted and grow, they bear fruit for a time, and eventually they close their doors. Be with those churches near the end of their life cycle, as they struggle with difficult ministry decisions and limited resources. Comfort those carrying memories of a full church and active membership with the assurance that their ministry was never in vain, and that you used it to serve souls. Give pause to those inclined to make hasty decisions, so that they are sensitive to their fellow saints with treasured recollections of their church. Make them open to considering how they might still continue to bless other churches or ministries with their means or manpower, so that your kingdom still comes through their support of gospel efforts. Remember your people gathered in these sacred spaces, Lord, and the many years of faithful service they rendered to bring honor and glory to you.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
