For Those Experiencing Devastating Loss

Providential Lord,
Recent and ongoing wildfires have taken so much from so many. The homes and possessions lost are so much more than just their appraised value; they are ties to family histories and portals to precious memories. Our belongings don’t just belong to us, but in some ways are extensions of us. And as men, for better or worse, our successes and achievements are often connected to our possessions. 

We feel for those who have experienced devastating loss. While it is difficult for us to imagine the magnitude of their situation, give us empathetic hearts and genuine concern for their welfare. Whether a person had much or had little, when it is suddenly all stripped away, they are on equal footing. 

Provide for their needs. Cause avenues of generosity to pour out on their behalf. Guard them from being taken advantage of as they seek to put their lives back together. Band together communities of care and concern to take up their cause and be their advocates. Replace what can be replaced, while also letting faded or forgotten memories ease the sense of loss. 

Through all of this, open many eyes to the realization that Job had: you give and you take away; blessed is your name. May what has so suddenly been lost also serve as a reminder of how richly and generously you provided in the first place. Above all else, I pray that the loss of worldly belongings heightens appreciation for heavenly blessings and the spiritual riches that flow from them, which cannot perish, spoil, or fade away. Truly, those who have you have everything they need.

For Those Grieving Sudden Death

Loving Savior,
Be with those experiencing the sudden, unexpected death of a loved one or dear friend. While we have the confident hope of eternal life for fellow believers, the surprise of such a loss can feel like a sucker punch, leaving us gasping for air. When someone’s physical presence no longer fills a home, it feels empty. When their unique mannerisms disappear, a piece of the normalcy in our lives disappears, too. When their catch phrases or common sayings are no longer expressed at the moments we expect them, we are painfully reminded they aren’t here with us anymore. 

Dull the sting of death with the assurance of reunion through the Resurrection. Replace pain with your peace and direct heavy hearts to the light yoke of rest we have in you. Surround grieving family and friends with a support system of caring individuals to listen and to comfort as needed. Over time, shift the sadness of loss into gratitude for the time of life that was shared and spent together. Through the precious promises of your Word, bring healthy healing to all who are hurting and console and restore weary spirits as only you can.

For Hurricane Victims

All Comforting Father,
As many of us wake up this morning, we easily take for granted our warm bed, the roof over our head, and the electricity that keeps everything running smoothly. But for many in the southeast, whose lives have been drastically affected by Hurricane Helene, they are without these things and much more.

We pray for all of those who lost so much as a result of the powerful forces of nature that devastated and destroyed. Meet their needs and provide for their daily bread in any manner possible. Move the hearts of many to reach out and support those in need as they are able. Look with favor on all those working tirelessly to search and rescue those still unaccounted for. For the families who lost loved ones in the storm, replace their pain with your peace. Use this turmoil to lead many to a deeper trust in you as this experience reminds them of the futility of misplaced trust in what is temporary and so easily swept away. Finally, in the darkness of so much loss, let your love shine as brightly as ever.
