For Musical Gifts in Worship

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred. Thank you for those who preach the Word and serve the Sacrament. May their efforts continue to feed our faith as they keep us focused on Jesus and his saving work.

Working together with pastors in worship are those who use their musical gifts to guide God’s people in singing the good news of the gospel. Thank you for the musical variety you provide in worship through different instrumental and vocal gifts. Bless the time musicians put in practicing each week to play and sing in a way that strives for excellence in worship. Let them feel appreciated for all their efforts, and through their efforts, edify your people and glorify your name.  

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

For Those Unable to Worship

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred. There are many who long to gather in church for worship this morning, but for a variety of reasons are unable to. For Christians in certain parts of the world, gathering together with other believers is a dangerous risk. For others, there is no Christian church that is faithful to your Word in close proximity. Still others suffer from health issues or a physical inability to attend worship. 

Provide all these believers with other opportunities to feed their faith. Thank you for technology that allows them watch worship and to hear your Word, even when they cannot be physically present. Surround them with caring Christians to encourage and uplift them, and provide them with pastors and missionaries to serve and care for their spiritual needs.  

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

To Overcome Worship Frustrations

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred. But… they can also be a source of frustration if I allow them to be. There can be elements of worship or styles of music that I don’t care for. I may find the sermons or the preaching to be formulaic and predictable. There are individuals who sometimes get under my skin. In short, there are always realities that I can turn into roadblocks to justify taking a pass on worship.

Yet any reason I might list to excuse myself from worship also serves as a double-edged sword, reminding me of my need for forgiveness. Let your gracious patience and with me and your boundless forgiveness always be enough to drive me to worship you. Let nothing hinder me from being in your presence where your Word is proclaimed and the Sacraments are dispensed. Turn every worship obstacle into an opportunity that can stretch and grow my faith and bless and serve my neighbor.

To Taste and See Your Goodness

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred. In your Word you invite us to taste and see that you are good. Sundays are an ideal opportunity to take you up on your invitation. In every way possible this morning, as I walk into your house for worship, let me experience your goodness. As I take note of the worship space and consider how so much of it directs my attention to you, let me see your goodness. When I sing hymns that recount all that you have done on my behalf, all that you do daily for me, and all that you promise to do for me in the future, let me see your goodness. When your Word is read and proclaimed, send your Spirit to enlighten my understanding of you and reinforce my faith as you let me see your goodness. When I leave your house, having been filled up and encouraged, let me leave with a renewed zeal to pursue righteous living and to draw others to you so they, too, may see your goodness. 

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

To Love Your Word and Worship

Holy Father,
The Ten Commandments are intended to be a blessing, not a burden. Nevertheless, since they expose my sin, I naturally bristle before them. You command us to love your Word and worship, not because you need it from us, but because you know our greatest need is you. You alone save, and without you and apart from you nothing else matters. So when I despise or neglect your Word, I am on the most dangerous path possible.

In this modern day, I have more opportunities than anyone at any time in history not only to study your Word, but also to worship with other believers. Since there is no other means by which you build up and bless your people and your church, instill in me a craving for the Bible. Create in me a longing to gather with fellow believers to be fed and nourished by your Word as it is sung, spoken, and proclaimed in worship. Make me diligent in prioritizing daily time with you in your Word, so that I may treasure it as it ought to be treasured. Through it, keep me near to you for this life, so that I may be near you in the life to come.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

To Serve Others in Worship

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred. When I enter your house of worship, I am eager to be fed and served by you with a diet of law and gospel. So much of worship directs my attention to the many ways you have served me in the past, you currently serve me in the present, and you promise to serve me in the future. How blessed I am to be served by you!

Your service to me inspires my service to others. Help me see the ways I can serve others gathering for worship this morning. I don’t just want to be a Sunday morning consumer, but also a contributor. Use worship as a platform to provide opportunities for me to follow in your footsteps by serving others. Give me the confidence to step in and serve when and where I can, and help others to be unafraid to ask. May your service to me and my service to other be a blessing today.

For Those New to Worship

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred. Today I pray for all of those considering a first-time visit to worship. I also pray for those considering returning to church years or even decades of being away. Whatever it was that prompted this consideration, I pray that you not only lead them to follow through, but also richly bless their decision. Let them find a place of warmth and welcome, free of cold shoulders and judgmental stares. Make their worship a joy and allow law and gospel to be clearly preached, sung, and spoken. Let Jesus as Savior be the highlight of their experience, and send your Spirit to do whatever work is necessary in their heart through your Word. Open their eyes not only to see the blessing of continuing to draw nearer to Jesus in the future, but to his church and people as well.

For Parents with Little Ones in Worship

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred. Satan knows this and tries to throw every excuse, hindrance, and obstacle in our way to keep us from gathering together around your Word. Parents with small children are in a season of life marked by the uphill challenges of bringing their little ones to your house for worship. So today I pray for them. 

Help fathers and mothers to provide a united front in modeling a regular and consistent worship life for their children. When they are on the same page, they provide each other with the blessing of mutual encouragement and support. Reward their efforts by allowing them to see the fruit of their labors as your Spirit nurtures and grows the faith of their children. Let their children, too, see and experience the richness of regular worship. Lead them to appreciate the sacrifices their parents make to keep Jesus at the center of their lives. Provide struggling and single parents with a church family that welcomes them and finds delight in sharing the burdens of bringing up little ones in the shadow of the cross.

For Focused Worship

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred. Give me attentive ears and undistracted eyes to hear and see the mystery of the gospel in worship today. Allow your gospel to captivate me as it is sung and spoken, that it might create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit in me. Sharpen my focus for the duration of worship, that I may continually see the cross on display from beginning to end. Edify all of us in attendance, and equip us to joyfully live out our callings through your gospel. Bless all who gather in your house today for worship.

For Those Who Serve in Worship

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred. This morning I want to thank you for everyone involved in making worship happen. Thank you for faithful pastors who lead worship well and diligently prepare their sermons each week as they bring law and gospel to their hearers. Thank you for those with musical gifts, instrumentalists and vocalists, who not only have those gifts, but edify others with them as they serve in worship. Thank you for ushers and volunteers who see that so many of the details of the service are carried out and everything is done in a fitting an orderly way. For all others, those who provide rides for others, refreshment servers, those tidying up after worship, those following up with Sunday morning visitors, and so many more, thank you. You have blessed your church with so many gifted people, and it is inspiring and encouraging to be able to be a part of it as you serve us with your Word and Sacrament in worship.
