To Give Others Time Together

Ever-present Savior,
Time is a gift from you to manage. The desire to spend time together with others is also how many people feel loved and filled up. Guide me to tune in to this need of others close to me, so that I plan to spend dedicated, undistracted quality time with them. When doing so is inconvenient or requires significant sacrifice, remind me that you gave me the gift of eternity together with you. Just as you came to serve me, so make me willing to serve others in this way. In a culture that is always busy, overbooked, overcommitted, and overstressed, giving others the gift of time together can be one of the most precious commodities. Help me give my time to others freely and generously. 

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

To Imitate Those Who Persevere

Faithful Father,
As I watch my steps in life and cautiously seek to avoid the devil’s dangerous detours, I am grateful that you promise to be with me and that you also provide guidance and support. Scripture is filled with examples of believers who also experienced spiritual struggles – many of which were on a level I’ll never face! I am blessed to see how your grace allowed them to persevere, and to be able to learn from their examples and follow in their footsteps. Give me their endurance and resilience.

You also provide living and breathing examples in my life right here and now to show me the way and encourage me. Help me learn from how my fellow believers have navigated difficult paths in challenging seasons of their lives. Through their experiences, steer me clear of the pitfalls they encountered and guide me along your paths, that nothing would deter me from arriving at my heavenly destination one day.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

To Focus on What Builds My Faith

Dear Jesus,
I know the acts of faith that are important for strengthening my faith: reading and studying your Word, gathering regularly for worship and the Lord’s Supper, spending time in prayer, etc. Nevertheless, even though I know how important these are, they also require a measure of commitment and sacrifice. To prioritize these spiritual disciplines means having to say no to other things in life that I enjoy and appreciate, so sometimes I convince myself that they are too inconvenient or too much for me.

But what I don’t realize at the time, is that avoiding them in the short term because of a perceived inconvenience always results in more pain in the long term. Then, during the times when my life seems to be going off the rails, when things are falling apart, or when trials arise, I can often look back and see that I have been neglecting those faith-building disciplines in my life.

Why do I always think I know better than you??? Forgive me for distancing myself from you, and draw me back to you through your Word. Guard me from ever believing the lie that time spent in your Word, in worship, in prayer, etc. is ever inconvenient or wasted time and instead use them to fortify my trust in you more and more.

To Persevere Along the Way

Precious Savior,
I know the you are the Way, and only through you has the door to heaven been opened. But I also know that along that way there will be crosses to bear that will include hardship, pain, and suffering. When these are revealed in my life, I am tempted to look for an alternative route. It would seem to be so much easier if I could simply ignore the difficulties altogether and pretend they’ll just go away. If only I could close my eyes and cover my ears to all struggles, then open them again to see that everything would be better! 

But it doesn’t work that way. I must stay the course, even when it includes suffering and pain. For what is waiting on the other side for all who persevere is better than anything we could ever imagine.

To Guard Against False Teaching

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred. As believers all over the world gather on this day to hear your Word proclaimed, protect their ears from false teaching. Keep those preaching faithful to the promises they made to speak the truth as your representatives. Keep their preaching pure, free from the seeds of lies and deception sown by the evil one, whether blatant or subtle. Equip leaders and elders in your churches to distinguish between truth and error, so that they may correct or rebuke heresy, and raise up mature Christian members to share in that responsibility. Guard those preaching from the temptation of proclaiming what itching ears want to hear. Guide them in rightly handling the application of law and gospel. Through such faithful preaching sanctify your church and keep her in the one true faith.

For the Gift of Humor

Good Lord Giver,
Thank you for the gifts of humor and laughter. Of all the emotions we can experience, few are as impactful as the feelings that come as a result of laughter. Thank you for those who devote themselves to making a living by crafting jokes and telling funny stories. Thank you for friends with a sense of humor, the ones we can count on to pick us up after we’ve had a rough day. Thank you for the many different ways that humor and laughter can be expressed that appeal to different types of people. While we certainly could function and live without humor, it is just one more of the many blessings that reflect your underserved grace and demonstrate how much you delight in bringing joy into our lives. Use the joy we experience from humor to provide us with a foretaste of how truly joy-filled we will be in your presence for all eternity. Until that time comes, please continue to keep us laughing.

To Speak Respectfully

Loving Savior,
How I speak to and about others matters. When I speak negatively about someone to others, I am influencing their opinions about that person’s reputation. While there may be a time and a place for this when safety concerns or dangerous risks may potentially be associated with someone, more often than not, that isn’t the case. I am either speaking carelessly or thoughtlessly without any regard for the impact my words have on someone else’s reputation. Or, I am deliberately disparaging others with malicious intent. Forgive me, for I know that if the tables were turned and I discovered others speaking similarly about me, I would not stand for it. Don’t, therefore, allow me to be involved in any way with such talk of others.

Instead, lead me to speak respectfully of others, even when I disagree with them. Let my words be positive and encouraging, always seeking to build up the reputation of others or come to their defense. The world’s words aim to tear down and divide. May my words instead heal, restore, and unify whenever and wherever possible. May my words be worthy of your name that I bear and may they always honor you.

To Persevere Through Adversity

Dedicated Lord,
When faced with adversity, it’s easy to want to give in or give up. Sometimes just anticipating the extra time and effort it takes to handle certain challenges is enough to take the wind out of our sails. When such struggles also require physical pain or the emotional weight of stepping outside our comfort zone, it can feel like too much to take on.

Without your strength, these types of difficulties might overtake me; but I am not without your strength. You promise to help me navigate hard things in life. Let that be the confidence I need to persevere. Help me to look up rather than give up, and remind me that there is great blessing in simply enduring and seeing things through. Grow and stretch me through adversity, so that I may be better equipped to face the next hardship, and qualified to support others through theirs, too.

For Brothers in the Faith

Dear Jesus,
I am grateful that you haven’t called me to follow in your footsteps alone, but have always brought brothers in the Christian faith to walk alongside me. While fellowshipping and staying connected with fellow Christians in general is a blessing, there is a unique friendship shared between men of faith. That relationship is even more impactful when guys share a particularly tight bond. David had Jonathan. Jesus had his inner circle of disciples. We have those who know us well enough to call us out and correct us when we need a rebuke or admonishment. But those same individuals are also right there to celebrate when they notice the spiritual progress that you work in us. 

These connections nurture accountability and help foster a growth mindset. Guys are better when we grow together, rather than allowing ourselves to go it alone and fall into isolation. Thank you for the men you have put in my life who care about my soul and spiritual health enough to call me out, take me under their wing, or whatever other good you may work in my life through them. Continue to bless Christian men everywhere with other Christian men nearby to walk with you and live for you together.

To Trust You More

Lord Almighty,
Increase my trust in you. Let not just my words, but my actions as well, demonstrate that trust. My bank accounts, my schedule, my priorities – these and so many other things paint a picture of where my trust truly resides. When doubts creep in, crowd them out with Christ. When I look to other sources and services for confidence or assurance, patiently direct me back to you. Since trust in you is created, sustained, and strengthened through your Word, let my time in it be a non-negotiable portion of each day. If greater trust is generated by the Spirit working through the Word, then drive me to it daily.
