To Put Sin to Death

Mighty God,
It can be easy to become too casual with my sin. I know grace. I know forgiveness. Sometimes, though, I twist those blessed assurances to rationalize that my sins aren’t really that big a deal since Jesus already paid for them. 

This is foolish and dangerous. Forgive me. Don’t allow me to deceive myself into thinking that sin is a minor thing that can be entertained and kept under control. There is a reason you use such strong language and call us to put to death whatever belongs to our earthly nature. Sin is not to be taken lightly! Strengthen me to take sin seriously, to spot the warning signs ahead of it, and to rebuke it when it entices. Give me the determination not merely to maim sin or injure it, to slow it down or sidestep it, but to kill it completely and put it to death at every opportunity.

To Set My Mind on Things Above

Heavenly Father,
It isn’t only my heart – my feelings and desires – that you direct me to set on things above, but also my mind. This makes perfect sense, for you as our Creator wired us in such a way that our hearts and minds are connected. Since our feelings and desires flow from our thoughts, how important it is then that we follow your guidance and set our minds on things above!

So I ask you to send your Spirit to keep my thoughts in check, to safeguard them from the enemy’s ambushes, and to limit any mindless disengagement that could leave me vulnerable. Although your thoughts are beyond my thoughts, let my thinking imitate your thinking which you have revealed to me in your Word. Lead me to meditate on the spiritual truths of your Word and to ponder what pertains to your kingdom. May I daily consider your church and her ministry, and prayerfully reflect on where and how I fit into your designs and intentions for them. Then, when my mind is properly aligned and set on things above, ensure that my heart’s desires follow accordingly.

To Create Godly Desires in Me

Heavenly Father,
You direct me to set my heart on things above. In your Word and still today, references to the heart have to do with feelings and desires. So when you call me to set my heart on things above, it really is an encouragement to focus my feelings and desires toward godly, spiritual things. 

Since it is so natural for my wants to be worldly, I need your help. Let your Spirit dwell in me richly so that the longings I have line up more and more with what you desire for me. Give me not just a knowledge or awareness of the spiritual gifts and fruit mentioned in your Word, but also the desire to pursue them eagerly. Make my wants more kingdom-minded while also detaching my heart from the temporal and worldly. Create in me desires that are more concerned with eternal outcomes than temporary pleasures and pursuits.

To Live in the Confidence of the Resurrection

Victorious Savior,
By your resurrection, you solidified and secured all that was necessary for our salvation. We are free from Satan’s slavery, from sin’s condemnation, and from death’s eternal claim on us. You are victorious, and through faith in you, that victory is also ours. 

We are not longer among the spiritually walking dead, but having been raised with you, are victorious and alive. Let your resurrection give us a spiritual swagger that allows us to live boldly in confidence. Steer us away from claims or feelings of victimhood or pity when we forget who we are in you. Instead, make us eager to be the salt and light you have made us to be in this world. Let us not shy away from conversations or behavior that would celebrate you, but embrace all such opportunities to exude the confidence we have as victors through the Resurrection.

For Special Occasions in Worship

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred. At times, the weekly blessing of gathering in your presence with fellow believers is amplified even more by the celebration of special milestones. What a joy it is to highlight festivals from church history, recognize special observances in the church year, and celebrate ministry milestones! Thank you for these and all memorable occasions and for the chance to draw attention to them through our worship. They often provide us with welcome variety in worship and additional ways to express our gratitude. Thank you for the gifts you’ve given to those who plan special services like these to edify and build up so many. Bless all such occasions with a Christ-centered focus that leaves worshipers continually longing to rejoice in the Lord!

For Full Confidence in My Salvation – Prayers

Gracious Mediator,
Some things in life we feel more confident about than others. We carry out certain responsibilities effortlessly, while others cause uncertainty or even anxiety. If our status before you relied on any effort or requirement on our part, our lives would be a constant carousel of chaos, questions and confusion. 

Thankfully, there is no question and there is no doubt. With you as our mediator, we have full confidence that all of the Father’s righteous requirements have been met and fully satisfied through you. And, since you gave yourself as the ransom for all people, no more payment remains and there is no unsettled debt outstanding. Because we stand before you with the confidence we have through you, make us also bold pray with that same confidence. We have nothing to fear and stand only to gain from your good grace as you choose to bless us accordingly.

For the Salvation of Many

Savior God,
Prayers for the salvation of those who are lost can never be made too often. Not only will there always be those who are lost in the darkness of unbelief for whom we can pray, but since your desire is also for all people to be saved, such prayers are always inline with your will. 

Therefore, I pray for the salvation of many souls today. As your powerful gospel is proclaimed, wherever your powerful gospel is proclaimed, in whatever situation your powerful gospel is proclaimed, let it reach the ears and hearts of many. With that amazing message of forgiveness and salvation through Jesus, let your Spirit plant seeds of faith that grow and mature into a huge orchard of believers, who then blossom and bear abundant fruit. Soften stubborn, obstinate hearts, awakening them to the joy and peace in you that can be found nowhere else. Bless the efforts of all who share the gospel, raise up more bold believers to join them, and move many more to generously support the continued spread of the gospel in every possible way.

To Please You with My Prayers

Loving Lord,
One of the great joys of being adopted into your family by your gracious gift of faith is this: our lives are pleasing in your sight. How humbling it is that we should be able to carry out a single deed, speak a single word, or consider a single thought that would ever be pleasing to you. Nevertheless, because we are completely clothed with your righteousness, it is so!

Therefore, make even my prayers pleasing to your ears. Mature me to set aside selfish requests. Guide me instead along the paths of your plans and purposes for my prayers. Help me to maintain the proper balance between requests that center on the physical and temporal and the spiritual priorities that matter much more both now and into eternity. Let my heart beat with care and concern for others, routinely bringing their needs before you, since this, too, is pleasing to you. Move me to pray for those over me, beside me, and beneath me, so that your gracious favor and blessing extend to all those around me.

To Live Godly and Holy Lives

Holy Spirit,
Thank you for interceding on our behalf when we offer up our prayers. And thank you for equipping us as we grow in faith to carry out that for which we pray. With that in mind, guide me as I seek to live in godliness and holiness. Begin by increasing in me the desire to strive for your high standards of Christian living. While protecting me from a self-righteous spirit, instill in me a genuine desire to stand out from the rest of the world by my living. Not only does that honor you, but it also serves to reflect you to others. Keep me from succumbing to any shame or ridicule from others as I look to live for you more and more. Instead, let my example of godly and holy living lead others to aspire to live more honorably as well.

To Expand the Reach of My Prayer Life

Providential Father,
Not only do you invite and welcome my prayers, but you also guide and direct them, including those for whom I should pray. When I do pray, the majority of my prayers are on my own behalf or for those within my own family, social, and church circles. But you invite me to pray for all people, which exponentially expands the list of those to include in my prayers. I can bring up the needs of others with the confidence that, whether or not I even know them, you know them by name and are more qualified to address their needs than I am to ask for them. 

So I pray for the greatest need of many: their salvation. Work through your Word, proclaimed to and through your church, to reach the lost with your powerful gospel. Where other needs or concerns prohibit the gospel from being heard, address them by meeting them or removing them according to your will. In doing so, let a double measure of your goodness be known to many by your concern for both their temporal and eternal welfare. Then, as you bring them to faith, shape their own prayer lives to multiply the prayers offered up on behalf of all people.
