For Resurrection Joy

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred, and none more sacred than this festival morning, as we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. The long Lenten journey culminated at the cross, where death appeared to swallow up the Savior. But this morning we see a different story: the tables have turned, and it is death that has been swallowed up by the victorious Resurrection! Bless all who gather today to celebrate your gifts of forgiveness, salvation, and eternal life. Let the empty tomb ease minds troubled by thoughts of dying and calm hearts afraid of death. Fill countless souls with joy on this day, for today and always, life rules because He lives!

To Realize How Truly Blessed I Am

Precious Savior,
Today, with the smell of snuffed-out Good Friday candles wafting behind me and the floral aroma of Easter lilies before me, let me pause to reflect how richly blessed I am. You, the innocent Son of God, took my place as a guilty crucified criminal. You endured the wrath and punishment that should have been mine. You died… for me. Tomorrow, I celebrate once again with blissful joy your rising up from the grave to live again… for me! These monumental milestones are mine to rejoice over, as they have forever altered my eternity. Since they cannot be taken from me or be undone, my joy is everlasting. Because you died and live again, so will I. How overjoyed my heart is to fathom it all!

To Treasure Your Death

Sacrificial Lamb,
Death is not something we celebrate. Our hearts are heavy when headlines highlight killings or casualties. We mourn the loss of our loved ones and grieve with others when they experience the same pain. Death hits us hard.

And your death is no different. And yet, it is at the very same time radically different, nothing like any other death. For as much as your death tears us apart, knowing that our sin necessitated it, we also rejoice because of it! Your death took the place of our death. Your death canceled our debt. Your death satisfied the Father’s wrath. Your death guaranteed our life. So we call this Friday Good.

A thousand times over, thank you.

For the Gift of Holy Communion

Lord Jesus,
On this Thursday of Holy Week, we thank you for the sacred Supper you instituted. By it, we commemorate your death and recall the significance of the sacrifice you made for all. Together with the bread and wine, the very body and blood we receive in Holy Communion take us back to the cross, where you secured our forgiveness and eternal salvation. By the blood you shed for us on Calvary, you still forgive and cleanse us through this miraculous Meal. Feed your church continually with this sacrament, strengthening and sustaining the weak and the strong. Lead believers everywhere to treasure the Lord’s Supper and receive it regularly.

To Be Real About My Sin and Your Grace

Forgiving Father,
There is no greater blessing than the assurance of salvation and knowing that it is a gift from start to finish. Sometimes, however, I allow that assurance to morph into overconfidence or arrogance, leading me to trivialize or downplay my own sin. When the certainty of my forgiveness convinces me to think that my sin is no big deal, I end up diminishing both grace and the gravity of your Son’s sacrifice for me. Let each of these be true: you loathe sin while also delighting in forgiving it. Guide me to have the same perspective, so that I despise my own sin and genuinely desire to overcome it, while also treasuring your generous, limitless grace and forgiveness.

To Rely on Grace Plus Nothing

Loving Redeemer,
Your Word clearly teaches that we are not saved by works, but by grace, through faith. Although we know and believe that, we can so easily slip right back into our own self-righteousness. We cannot rid ourselves of that part of us that yearns to make our salvation a combination of grace PLUS something – anything – on our part. But if salvation is by grace AND anything else, then we are robbed of the certainty of our salvation! Our best efforts bring us no closer to salvation than the most vile deeds of the unbeliever. The work of salvation is yours alone. Give me a faith that clings to that truth, rejoices in it, and finds peace in it.

To Salvage Struggling Marriages

Gracious Savior,
Marriage is filled with wonderful blessings for husbands and wives, but it isn’t without its challenges. While every marriage needs your guidance and grace, be present especially in those marriages most at risk. Give spouses in those seasons an extra measure of patience and grace for each other, driven by a renewed determination to devote themselves to doing whatever it takes to save their marriage. Grant healing and recovery to the hurting spouse, and a humble, repentant heart to the spouse responsible for the hurt. Whether the issue at the center of their struggle is a series of smaller ongoing concerns or one or two more substantial matters, help them see a path forward that fills them with hope. Turn Satan’s efforts to destroy marriage against him and revive marriages on life support so that they thrive once again.

For Palm Sunday Worship

Heavenly Father,
Sundays are sacred. While Christ-centered worship is always edifying, some Sundays of the church year highlight the especially significant events of our Savior’s life and ministry. This morning is one such Sunday, on which we remember and celebrate the Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem. Thank you for the Son’s humble service and selfless spirit, being willing to arrive in the very city that would sentence him to death. Today marks the first day of the holiest week of the year. Bless Palm Sunday worshippers everywhere who gather today to follow the Savior in faith to the upper room, to the cross, and ultimately to the empty tomb.

For Widows and Widowers

Compassionate Lord,
Look with favor on widows and widowers. Whether their loss was recent or in years past, they understandably experience painful memories and reminders of their loved one. Comfort and console them as they grieve. When they are feeling the ache of loneliness, remind them they are never really alone with you by their side. Additionally, surround them with human connection through family and friends. Where there is the desire for companionship, provide it accordingly. Help widows and widowers adjust to new plans and purposes for them in their lives. Reassure them that they are very much loved, that they matter, and that their lives are no less meaningful without their spouse. Move their churches to support and help them as you call believers to do, and cause neighbors and acquaintances to be present with care and aid whenever needed. Remember them, Lord, and do not let them feel forgotten.

For Moderation in My Screen Time

Dear Lord,
Give me a spirit of self-discipline in my usage of technology and screens. There are tremendous blessings available to us through our phones and laptops, but any blessing can quickly become a burden if I allow myself to become enslaved by it. In order to determine if my screen time has reached unhealthy levels, I have to be aware of how much time I spend on my devices. If I notice others commenting on my frequent usage, let me take it to heart and make changes rather than becoming bitter. Help me sort out the good and beneficial uses from the unnecessary and negative ones. Let moderation be my mantra, so that my relationship with screens honors you and allows me to be present to serve others.
