I am ashamed.<\/p>\n
I am embarrassed.<\/p>\n
On this day after our presidential election, I am not proud to be an American.<\/p>\n
I am astonished that Donald Trump is our president elect.<\/p>\n
This was not the outcome I expected. I fully accepted that the next president of the United States of America would be Hillary Clinton.<\/p>\n
But the outcome of the election is not why I am ashamed.<\/p>\n
It is not why I am embarrassed.<\/p>\n
No, the reason I am not proud to be an American has nothing to do with the way Americans voted.<\/p>\n
It has everything to do with the way Americans treated Americans who voted\u2026 or treated those who embraced their right not to vote.<\/p>\n
I have never seen an uglier side of the citizens of the United States of America \u2013 regardless of political affiliation \u2013 than during this presidential election.<\/p>\n
We \u201ccelebrate\u201d our diversity\u2026 by vilifying other races or orientations who didn\u2019t vote as we did. We are polarized. We hate each other because we have different values and views\u2026 all while hiding behind this facade that we\u2019re totally cool with it.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s not on any presidential candidate. We don\u2019t get to place that blame on someone else\u2019s political stumping or campaign speech.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s on us. And we can\u2019t fix it until we own it. Each and every one of us.<\/p>\n
America, we have a problem\u2026 and it has very little to do with the outcome of this election.<\/p>\n
It has everything to do with the citizens \u2013 you and me.<\/p>\n
No president will fix that.<\/p>\n
Only you can.<\/p>\n
You want to be proud of this country?<\/p>\n
Fix you. You\u2019re what\u2019s wrong.<\/p>\n
But no one else can do that for you. Only you can.<\/p>\n
I can\u2019t.<\/p>\n
